Butterfli19 05-10-2009 06:45 AM

Anyone up for confessing? 8)

less than $50
$50 - $100
$100 - $150
$150 - $200
$200 - $300
$300 - $500
or

For me it depends on the month and mood. The last two months I have probably spend pretty close to $200, other times I try to limit myself. Or at least that's what I tell myself...

Ninnie 05-10-2009 06:50 AM

I try to limit myself to $50 or less, sort of the slow and steady buyer, a fg here and there. Sometimes though I will go over board for stencils or quilting threads or tape for marking. It's amazing how fast it adds up! :-)

Ninnie

Courtepointe 05-10-2009 06:54 AM

Probably 100-150. That includes fabric, batting, gadgets, magazines, etc. That's a lot! 1200-1800 a year! Yikes!

ScubaK 05-10-2009 07:00 AM

Depends on my mood!
I just bought the GO! cutter and am trying to use up my stash before I go buy more fabric! Though I do need some batting and backing material and I could use some more fabric for the B&W Block swap
Then there is the latest Quilt magazines out....and I just bought 2 ME Designs but hey, I got 4 free...

mommaB 05-10-2009 07:21 AM

I don't keep track    If I see something I want and I've got the money..it's mine :!: :!: Otherwise, I don't buy for the sake of buying, and I don't spend what I don't have :D

Barbm 05-10-2009 07:44 AM

I limit myself to $100. But then, if are making a specific project, it will (not may- WILL) go over.

I figure I need to buy now and then have a great stash for retirement when I cannot afford it. OK- so I have at least 15 years to go, why procrastinate?

mpspeedy 05-10-2009 07:45 AM

I guess I fall into the $50-$100 range. There are times when it goes way over. I am working hard to hone down my stash. I try to make at least 2 or 3 Linus quilts a week. I mostly purchase fabric with coupons or big sales. I have enough in my stash to last me the rest of my life but I still buy more. I recently got rid of hundreds of dollars worth of clothing fabric, patterns and notions for sewing garmets. I haven't sewn a garmet in several years. My granddaughters are all teens and homemade doesn't fly with them. If my youngest daughter ever gets around to having a child I will have an excuse to go into garmet sewing again.
Our local vo-tech can certainly use the fabric to stretch thier budget for the students in the textile arts classes. A local shop owner who I used to work for will deliver the stuff to them.

sandpat 05-10-2009 08:08 AM

Oh...who adds it up???? I don't want too  The sad part is that I'd probably spend more, but I just don't have the room to keep it

Arizona Sunrises 05-10-2009 08:12 AM

A local gal was liquidating her online store at $3/yd, and I picked up over 150 yds of fabric--about half was batiks. I didn't buy anything for a couple of months, and I just spent $70 this weekend.

It's really sporadic, so I'm not sure.

sewjoyce 05-10-2009 08:16 AM

I'm not sure I wanna know how much a month I spend on my "hobby" -- but it does keep me out of the bars....

And the other day I realized that I hadn't purchased any summery clothing for myself since last spring (and I managed to gain weight over the winter and not a lot of the old stuff fits anymore.) So anyway, I "splurged" and bought one new top and one new pair of capris. Figure that will handle that. Besides, the less I spend on clothing, the more fabric money I have

camillacamilla 05-10-2009 08:27 AM

Sewjoyce- I too gained weight over the last year..so you are not alone. I justify my quilting spending as it being a safe hobby. Depending on the month and what project I have in mind, I spend probably $100-$300 a month...and for Mother's Day I got a gift card for fabric, so that is as good as spent too.

BellaBoo 05-10-2009 08:32 AM

I have to go on a fabric diet for awhile, I have no room for more unless I start cramming it in Rubbermaid bins and finding a place for those. I have enough to start any project and I may have to buy a few fat quarters for added color now and then. I started saving all my scraps and that is another can of worms I need to open real soon.

Maribeth 05-10-2009 08:36 AM

Confessing?!?

Now I am just starting out (or have been for the last ten months) . . . so I needed to stock up and I am a little OCD. I also found out that shopping for quilting supplies is actually easier than the actual quilting.

I think I now have every notion known to woman  and such and I am not exaggerating when I say I have at least 1000, yep, 1000 yards of fabric in my two walk-in closets. That sounds like a lot OCD, doesn't it.

So my plan is to stick to less than $100 month from now on. Or I might just give up and sell my stuff on ebay.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 05-10-2009 08:50 AM

I have to say 50-100.
My biggest problem is working part time in a fabric store. It's very tempting to buy everything in sight. Unfortunately, this second job was not supposed to be to fuel my hobby, it was supposed to be to pay off debt and save for our wedding. So, while I do spend more now than before I started working there, I get lots of stuff for next to nothing, and that's hard to pass up.

AND, I bought a new sewing machine in February...

AkAngel 05-10-2009 10:19 AM

All I can say for sure is ALOT!!! To much, more than I'll probably ever be able to use in a lifetime, no better make that 9 lifetimes!!. But ofcourse no matter what I already have its never the right piece for what I need then and ofcourse I always buy more than a project calls for because I make tomany mistakes cutting and I don't want to run short.
I took a class last weekend, fusible applique and spent over 150.00 then because they gave us a great discount that day, then just when I got done shopping for that, I remember I had another class starting this weekend so I spent another 70.00 on it. We won't mention what I'd spent in there just a couple weeks before for a mystery quilt we're doing. It should suffice to say that I've done more than my share to keep them in business for another month!!
Muriel
Oh yeah, I'm going to have to shopping for backing one of these days for these 3 projects that are now in the works. I do have a bolt of batting downstairs so I think I'm o.k. on that for awhile. Geesh

Quilt Mama 05-10-2009 10:35 AM

Definitely under $50 monthly. In the past year all I've bought is batting 2 or 3 meters at a time. Other than that I make do and can keep myself busy for some time. It helps that I work to the beat of my own drummer and like the challenge of making use of what I have, rather than spending money. Love to talk and share quilting ideas but hate shopping. It is far easier to buy what you perceive you need than tweak design decisions to make them work.

dojo36 05-10-2009 11:13 AM

well, it's like this: i used to smoke and i was a heavy smoker (2 packs a day), therefore a carton just lasted me 5 days - so that would be 6 cartons a month at $40.00/carton, any way u look at it, that's $240.00 a month. so i justify my fabric spending, saying heck, i'm just spending my "cigarette" money. I just quit last year on June 8th after smoking for 50 plus years. so if any of yall want to quit smoking, just pm me and i'll tell you what philosophy i used to quit.

That is so true! Between buying fabric, washing fabric, reorganizing fabric, making lists of things to make and remaking those lists, reading about quilting, I spend less time quilting! hmm...maybe I ought to rethink this...

MadQuilter 05-10-2009 11:27 AM

I went to Beverly's yesterday to pick up a spool of red Star thread. $157 later - I don't know whether I should laugh or cry.

littlehud 05-10-2009 11:27 AM

50 to 100 sounds about right. On a good month when I have lots of new quilts starting it may be closer to 200. Oh well, keeps me in line.

peaceandjoy 05-10-2009 02:02 PM

I'd have to say my purchases vary widely, but probably average out to about $100/mo.

Yikes, 1,000 yds in 10 months? That makes me look like a very small time buyer, lol. Yes, the shopping is often so much easier (and faster) than the quilting.

Dojo36 - so glad for you and your loved ones that you have quit smoking. You're almost at your 1 year anniversary, that is great! :D Your money is definitely better spent on fabrics.

Although I don't know where Beverly's is, I think I've purchased that very same thread! Last week I went into LQS to get two 1/2 yard cuts of fabric. My total was over $100. At least I remembered those original two that I needed. And I have already used the pattern (The Market Tote, by Country Quilter), two yards of fabric, and Decor-Bond.

While I don't like shopping for anything else, quilting things - from magazines to patterns, thread to fabric - I LOVE! We have several great shops w/in an hour's drive, plus I have a couple of online favorites.... We all need to do what we can to stimulate the economy, right?

tlrnhi 05-10-2009 02:32 PM

It all depends on the mood I'm in. Sometimes it can be $20, other times it can be $200. Plus, it also depends if the fabric is on sale.

quiltswithdogs 05-10-2009 11:09 PM

You don't want me on this post.
With our financial hardship, I haven't bought anything at all related to quilting since maybe last Spring. I am working completely out of my stash. The fabrics my physical therapist recently gave me are what I'm using for my 09 BOM. My sister gave me a subscription of Pons&Porter mag but that ended. My daughter gave me one month issue of another quilting mag as part of my birthday present. I hate this!
So what I have been spending per month is ...
$0

Cookn 05-11-2009 12:51 AM

It varies widely from month to month. Some months it could be zero others it might be hundreds. It's like the changing tides it ebbs and flows. This month would be off the charts because this longarm followed us home, next month will be a low month because we'll be traveling. But there is this one fabric store where we'll be that is usually good for a couple of hundred.

k3n 05-11-2009 02:44 AM

Depends who you ask - I reckon on average 100 - 150 euros (some months hardly anything but then last month I spent 300 UK pounds on a grace hoop, and two new feet for the sewing machine, and a couple of months ago I spent 200 euro in one day at a fabric fair in Holland!). BUT DH is sitting by me and HE reckons it's at least 150-200 per month - so take your pick, who do you believe? :D

sandpat 05-11-2009 05:13 AM

K...I'm thinking Hans is right, but then again...who's counting????

Justquilting 05-11-2009 05:20 AM

All depends on the mood....depends on my project.
Even if I want to just use stash..I still need something else.
So I try not to count..LOL
DH would probably say too much.
But he'd have a smile on his face.

Maride 05-11-2009 05:26 AM

Since DH lost his job I only buy when I sell a quilt or when I get a request of something I don't already have and when I get paid I recover it. When DH was working I would just go to my local shop to browse and come out with something way too often, but we could afford it.

Last month I quilted a queen size hand appliqued top for our church and I didn't charge them because it was to be raffled for charity and they sent me a $40.00 gift certificate to my local shop. I don't need to say that I spent it the same day.

To top it, yesterday, on Mother's Day, DH and the kids gave me a gift certificate to JC Penney. DH is probably the favorite male customer at the local quilt shop because when he goes there he spends. He has his own discount card and everything. I asked him how come he didn't get me fabric as usual, since I was expecting it, and he said that he forgot the last time I got any clothes for myself and now I have to go get some (he is kind of right)

I WANT TO GO FABRIC SHOPPING!!!

Maria

mary quite contrary 05-11-2009 06:01 AM

I am sooo glad to hear I'm not the only one. My family has to make me shop for clothes. Fabric shopping? NO PROBLEM!!!!!

pittsburgpam 05-11-2009 06:14 AM

Like everyone else, it depends. I didn't have much of a stash at all and I recently got my sewing room back after 2 years of giving it up for my grandson. I spent way too much, probably $400 per month, buying large lots on eBay, several collections that I loved, etc.

I also got a Grace frame, a new Viking, and a Go! Cutter. I don't need any equipment now (uh huh) and I'd have to re-organize for more fabric room. I have only spent about $100 the last month on other stuff and I expect that $100 to $200 will probably be my norm.

shaverg 05-11-2009 08:10 AM

Probably an average of $50-100

scrappylouisa 05-13-2009 07:54 AM

I usually spend $10 - $50 a month. I not only shop at Joann's.....I shop at thrift shops, flea marts and yard sales. It's amazing what you can find. I also recycle clothing that the family no longer wears. I recently made several long sleeve shirts into short sleeved shirts for my Dad. I have some nice shirt fabrics now to incorporate into my quilts and projects.

cyniree 05-13-2009 08:00 AM

We had a quilt shop hop in our area last month, and i spend over $100. And last year I remember spending over $200. So I cut back a little this year. And as far as monthly, it depends on the month, mood, and sales. Its an addiction but I love it.

dlf0122quilting 05-13-2009 08:13 AM

I usually try to keep it at about 50 or less and I have learned to be a great bargain shopper. I buy most of my fabrics on line theough Thousands of Bolts and Bear Paw Quilting. I do support my LQS's when I need something specific like tools or magazines. etc. I found that these 2 sites have some fabulous material for $3-5/yd and shipping costs are not any more than it would cost me to drive to the LQS's which are at least a 40 mile round trip for me. Also, I love getting those packages in the mail.
I get a lot of donated fabric from friends and from people in my church for charity quilts so not all of the fabrics I have in my sewing room are technically mine but I do combine them so I can color coordinate the quilts I make for our prayer quilt ministry and the charity quilts I make for the 2 guilds I belong to. I feel so blessed to have found this hobby and my many quilting friends. They are all in my prayers even if they don't believe because they have pulled me through some tough times.

waquilter 05-13-2009 09:08 AM

I'm not sure I want to add it up. It probably adds up to 100 to 150 per month. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Wow thats a lot but that is the only thing I spend money on besides food, clothing, shelter, automobile - no bingo, no casino, no tupperware. When I don't have any money like when I have to pay the property taxes I don't spend any on quilting.

Suz 05-13-2009 01:32 PM

Just got home from the quilt shop and spent $188.88 and this is just today's total.

Suz

Jim's Gem 05-13-2009 02:45 PM

I don't know, it totally depends on sales and what's going on. The first three months of this year I spent over $1,200, maybe more, I refuse to count. That's cause one of my favorite stores always has a huge sale on the 1st of the year with fabrics for $1.69 a yard, they continued it through the 3rd and then announced that they were closing the store and started a 40% off and then 60%, then 70 etc. I bought hundreds of yards of fabric cause I figure that I will never get a deal like this again. Then there are events, such as Road to California, I usually spend $200 or $300, in June we have a quilt run and there goes another $2-250. On "normal" months I only spend about 50 - $100 or so. I use mostly cash so it's not too traceable.  I don't think I really want to know how much I spend. I'm sure I have enough fabrics to last a couple lifetimes, but somehow I always see something that calls my name or that needs to join the other fabrics I have cause.......

in2stitchin 05-13-2009 07:43 PM

There was a time when I was busy having and raising babies that I could only buy enough fabric for the maternity, baby clothes, or quilt for the new little one. I am fortunate now to be retired and hubby still works a good job. I spend more than I should. More than I can ever live long enough to sew. Someday my daughter-in-law and granddaughter will inherit it all. I probably spend $200/month, sometimes more, especially when we go to springfield to see kids and kidletts. My favorite fabric store is there and they have an excellent selection of printed quilt back fabric up to 120 in wide.

I've been gone from this board for a year because we moved to a different state, bought a new home, and I've been absorbed trying to set up a new household, not to mention a new sewing studio!

okie3 05-14-2009 05:04 AM

I just buy when I know what I need when I'm working on a quilt or getting ready to work on one. So average about $25 to$30 a month . The most I ever spent was on some material to make the drapes in my dinning room and curtians for the kitchen window and that was about $100.00. They look nice though  :D :D
