First major quilt

1 Attachment(s)
I just finished piecing my first major quilt project. It is called "Chestnut and Vine" by Marcus Brothers. It was a BOM. I love the colors! Now to figure out how to quilt it. It has some hand appliqué, so I'm not quite sure what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated :).

First major quilt?!! Yikes! That is really something! You did a wonderful job! I have no clue as to how to quilt it? That always seems to be the challenge.

Prim Quilts 05-05-2014 05:14 AM

That is a gorgeous quilt!!!!

debcavan 05-05-2014 05:16 AM

Beautiful, what a major accomplishment.

Billi 05-05-2014 05:19 AM

Really can't help with quilting ideas, just wanted to tell you how pretty your quilt is love the color, it has a lot going on but it all blends and plays so well together.

PenniF 05-05-2014 05:20 AM

That is a gorgeous quilt...and to be your first....you have a great deal of talent !!!!
My only thought about the quilting would be to keep it simple....let this beautiful piecing and applique do the "talking". A batting that allows for 8-10 inches between quilt lines would give you the most flexibility.
Good luck - and congratulations !!

just_the_scraps_m'am 05-05-2014 05:23 AM

that is just darling! looks tough for a first one --but you did it--congrats--I would say to quilt in the spaces that aren't appliqued or hand quilted; every space doesn't have to be quilted & sometimes it looks better with less!

Abby'smom 05-05-2014 05:34 AM

 impressive quilt!!

QuiltnNan 05-05-2014 05:36 AM

i agree with pennif... let the beauty of the quilt blocks shine

quiltingfever 05-05-2014 05:36 AM

We can look forward to seeing more wonderful pictures of quilts from you if this is your first major quilt-great job.

Doggramma 05-05-2014 05:43 AM

That's a wonderful quilt! Great job. Sorry, no ideas for quilting it other than SID.

ManiacQuilter2 05-05-2014 05:43 AM

Since it is a traditional quilt, I would approach quilting it like hand quilters would such as outlining the applique. I would find quilt stencils of borders and motifs to fit in the other areas of your quilt. For your 1st big project, you did an excellent job with getting this top finished along with picking perfect fabrics. JOB WELL DONE !!

Quilter 65 05-05-2014 06:07 AM

Wow, that is a beautiful quilt, for the first or fifty. Congratulations.

canmitch1971 05-05-2014 06:11 AM

That is a gorgeous quilt..

susie337 05-05-2014 06:18 AM

Like the others, I would say keep it simple. You want your beautiful piecing to show through!

Twisted Quilter 05-05-2014 06:19 AM

Gorgeous quilt!

pokeygirl 05-05-2014 06:21 AM

Oh, wow! Beautiful quilt. Did you say this is your first? I wouldn't even think about making this. Good job!

Treasureit 05-05-2014 06:25 AM

I would stitch in the ditch (SID) first and then if you feel comfortable I would free motion around the applique to enhance it. SID is one of the first ways I attempted quilting on my machine.

BUT be sure you sandwich it without any wrinkles. I use the school glue method now and that has helped keep it from moving while quilting. Take you time when you sandwich...I thought is would be quick and easy when I first started, but taking time to be sure it is smooth is worth it.

You have done a great job...you must be so happy! I like that pattern too.

KwiltyKahy 05-05-2014 06:31 AM

This is beautiful. I agree with the others, keep the quilting simple to let the blocks shine.

Nanax4 05-05-2014 06:37 AM

Oh my goodness! What a beautiful quilt!!!!!

Nanax4 05-05-2014 06:43 AM

Wow! Stunning quilt!

You probably want to highlight the center medallion...thus quilt the print surround it, and also the wide border of the same fabric. Something swirly in the wide outside border.

SITD around the narrow borders, and the next border out from the medallion. Also SITD around the large squares and the diamonds in the center of each side. I can't decide if you should quilt the smaller squares that are towards the outside. Probably do something more detailed there?

Have fun deciding!

Quiltngolfer 05-05-2014 07:18 AM

Wow, that quilt has a lot to it. I bet it wasn't boring to make. It turned out absolutely wonderful!

TeresaA 05-05-2014 07:31 AM

Very nice! I would echo or stipple the background on the applique to help it stand out. Typically on sampler type quilts people do a different motif in each block according to what the block inspires. On the repeated blocks, the large triangle squares, I'd think of some geometric type pattern that would not stand out much.

Really nice! Especially for a first (major) quilt.

Kitsie 05-05-2014 08:31 AM

That's a lovely quilt! The fabrics are gorgeous and so classic looking!

Mariposa 05-05-2014 08:33 AM

Sew pretty!!

nena 05-05-2014 08:43 AM

First quilt? WOW, awesome. Can't wait to see your next one.

GrammaNan 05-05-2014 09:37 AM

Your quilt is stunning!

mpspeedy2 05-05-2014 10:29 AM

You did a beautiful job on the piecing, now hand quilt it like it deserves. As a hand quilter I would echo the pieced seams by 1/4 inch on either side and outline the appliques. If there is room in the borders use a simple curved chain or pattern that gives it a little rounded touch. I know that most on this board seem to be machine quilters but hand quilting lets you stay in touch with your work and for goes all that rolling and wrestling to get a bed size quilt under your machines needle. A quilt that lovely deserves to be handled with loving care.

KLO 05-05-2014 01:29 PM

What a gorgeous quilt! I saw this quilt a few years ago, I think, and printed the photo off because I like it so much. Then I tried to find someone who was selling the kit/fabric/pattern but never could track it down. This is definitely one I would want to make but guess that is not going to happen. Yours is outstanding! Cannot believe it is you first big quilt. Others have made good suggestions on how to quilt it so good luck and enjoy you most beautiful quilt.

Gladys 05-05-2014 02:01 PM

That is beautiful! What a great job you did! I agree with those who said to keep it simple. Maybe stitch in the ditch. Beautiful.

EmiliasNana 05-06-2014 05:00 AM

You did an amazing job, especially on all the hand applique. Just stunning, and I too, love the colors. I would stipple around the applique in the medallion, to make your lovely applique stand out.
