Ok, does anyone make flannel quilts? I don't mean now, now that warm weather is here, but other times.

The second quilt I ever made was flannel and I have made three more since then. But I don't see many pictures of finished flannel quilts on the forum, so just wondering is this something that most don't make.

I know in WI, they come in handy and I also like putting flannel backing on a cotton front. Helps prevent slipping off the bed and alittle more cozy.

I haven't made a flannel quilt yet, but have one cut out and ready to go at some point.

sharon b 05-08-2011 03:17 PM

All the rag quilts I have made are flannel - but have never tried to back a quilt with flannel

carolaug 05-08-2011 03:19 PM

i made a flannel jean tumbler quilt. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-97028-1.htm

I like to back baby quilts with flannel. Even in SC babies need to be cozy especially in A/C.

I have never made a rag quilt but have been collecting flannel for one. I have a drawer full of men's shirts, etc from the thrift store. Probably enough for two or three quilts!! I love 'stashing'.

Thanks to QB I know how to make one, now!!

I make quilts for the Veterans. I almost always put flannel or fleece on the back. I've made a few that were flannel front and back. The elderly sure appreciate the extra warmth and coziness, summer or winter.

DogHouseMom 05-08-2011 03:37 PM

I've made 3 baby quilts in flanel with flanel batting and backing. I love using flanel for batting, it makes the quilt very "pliable".

honeybee_2000 05-08-2011 03:45 PM

I was curious if the whole quilt including back and front could be quilted. I cant seem to keep warm in the winter the older I get..lol

laughingquilter 05-08-2011 03:49 PM

I've made several flannel quilts - I also use flannel in with some of my regular cottons. I really like working with flannel - it's not slippery at all.

marilynr 05-08-2011 05:35 PM

I have made 2 twin size flannel quilts plus one flannel rag
quilt. Love them. I use my walking foot to piece them &
would recommend using 1/2 inch seams, rather than 1/4 inch.
Guess how I know this?
Marilyn

Last year for Christmas I gave my three small gransons, scrap quilts made from the left over flannel that I saved from making them flannel pants. I backed them in flannel also. They loved them.

I have made flannel quilts pieced and rag. I love the coziness flannel has. Yes we too in Minnesota find quilts come in handy. With flannel i usually buy the best flannel I can buy. It seems to hold up better and doesn't shrink as much. Don't ask how I know that...

Peckish 05-08-2011 07:40 PM

I have made several flannel quilts. I made 2 with muslin backs and cotton batting, and 2 with flannel backs and cotton batting. The two with flannel backs are the ones that get fought over!

thebossbab 05-08-2011 09:43 PM

I'm making a flannel baby quilt right now. I'm using flannel for both front and back. I like the feel of flannel. It's cozy. :-)

cmilton 05-08-2011 10:10 PM

I have made rag quilts but have you ever made them as QAYG with connecting strips?

cherylynne 05-09-2011 12:56 AM

I make a couple of flannel quilts every year. My elderly mom doesn't care for them because she says they are too heavy on her. My DD really likes them and sometimes I use flannel as backing because it makes the quilt less likely to slide off ones lap. I like them because the are warm and soft.

Airwick156 05-09-2011 01:22 AM

I have only put flannel on the backs of baby quilts too. But I have thought about using flannel on other quilts.

jljquilter 05-09-2011 01:24 AM

You're right. They are nice in Wisconsin. I have made two Queen size and numerous lap size flannel quilts. Tops and backs are all flannel. They were hand quilted (outline).
I am wondering if anyone has washed a finished queen size flannel quilt? I'm sure that my washer and dryer are not up to the challenge but I hate to think about a laundromat. I have washed lap size ones and they seem to do fine.

merchjag 05-09-2011 03:08 AM

I made a baby quilt with flannel and then several rag quilts using flannel. They are soft and warm. Unfortunately the flannel baby quilt(given to my daughter for my gb) moved to Florida and is a wall hanging-too hot!! HA HA

I have made a couple of baby quilts completely with flannel. Flannel can be hard to work with if not properly prepared. I buy extra fabric and wash in warm water (usually with a color catcher) and machine dry on high. It is going to shrink quite a bit and it's better that it shrinks before I cut and sew. I also make 1/2 " seams and press open. I starch the back side of the flannel and my sewing machine likes it much better. Also easier to work with. When I'm done with everything, wash again and hang or lie flat on a clean sheet (mine lies on a long table) and let dry. For extra softening, a little fabric softener and when barely damp, put back in dryer on low. Beautiful, soft, and warm. Sometimes I don't use batt but if I do I use Warm and White. Nothing slips and slides while stitching.

Deborah12687 05-09-2011 03:27 AM

I have 3 large boxes of flannel scraps that I picked up from a garage sale years ago. I sew the blocks together and use it for backing on quilts. They make wonderful baby blankets.

ksea 05-09-2011 03:28 AM

I made 4 Trip around the world quilts, all flannel.

ckcowl 05-09-2011 03:45 AM

MOST of my quilts are flannel- I LOVE WORKING WITH FLANNELS!
when you look at the pics of my quilts most of them are flannel- or at least partially flannel- you just can't tell from the pictures.
the phesant quilt is mostly flannels-corduroy's and denims (heavy cottons)
there is even flannel in the amazing grace and ashley's ocean quilts.

daisylil 05-09-2011 04:01 AM

i love flannel but hard to get in uk anyone know of a good *flannel* site in US?

jljquilter 05-09-2011 04:03 AM

I've also done numerous baby quilts in flannel. Sometimes I pre-wash sometimes I don't. A quilt pre-washed doesn't shrink. One washed after quilting does but it usually shrinks then it looks fine because it's held in place.
What I was wondering about is routine washing of a queen size. Has anyone washed one? The weight could be a problem in both the washer and dryer. Line drying could bring my lines down. I really love flannel. That's the first place I go in a LQS. I prefer their quality over chain stores. Not cheap but in flannel you usually seem to get what you pay for.

Pretty well all my baby quilts are flannel-backed - wonderful and cozy!!

Johanna Fritz 05-09-2011 04:53 AM

This Wisconsinite has mad several flannel quilts. My baby quilts are usually flannel, and I have made some for my sons, and another for a friend. I cannot imagine piecing one without my walking foot.

deema 05-09-2011 04:58 AM

I often use flannel to back my quilts, usually when I don't, I'm using fleece or minky. I don't use regular cotton to back quilts often, I think I have only backed two or three with cotton. I like the feel of it better to snuggle up in. I have never used flannel to piece a top, though.

AlienQuilter 05-09-2011 05:07 AM

I love making flannel quilts.

I prewash all flannel and dry on high heat and immediately remove and fold it smoothly - no wrinkles.

I don't iron it - afraid of stretching it. Because I remove it quickly from the dryer there's no need for ironing.

Last quilt I made I did not use pins because the fabric did not slide around. I just "pinched" the middle of each block to keep it lined up.

Very important to remember - clean your bobbin area everytime you refill the bobbin. Flannel is very linty!]

I used 3 layers of flannel - top, batting and backing.

I would not recommend an "intricate" pattern using flannel. It's very stretchy and frays easily. Simple is better.

I just use a very simple quilting design. Last quilt, I just quilted from one corner of a block to another corner of a block beneath it creating a "diamond" design. Thing giant zig zag across the quilt with another zig zag crossing over it in the center of each block.

Those of you with sergers - dust them off and use them. Sergers are fantastic for flannel quilts.

Lucy90 05-09-2011 05:38 AM

I have made many quilts from flannel and have posted pictures of them. Maybe we just don't say it is flannel. I love working with flannel and they are so warm.

Happy Linda 05-09-2011 05:42 AM

Yep, love them.

Dkm 05-09-2011 06:12 AM

I hope someone will pop in with an answer for me. I want to make a flannel quilt with the top being cotton, no batting and flannel for backing. Has anyone tried this.

QuiltnNan 05-09-2011 06:15 AM

i've made flannel ones, but just for the little ones. flannel is usually too heavy for a big quilt, imo

TootieAnn 05-09-2011 06:20 AM

I love the feel of flannel. A LQS is going out of business and I would love to buy some of their flannel. I've spent more than my fabric budget for this month though so I don't know if I'll be able to get any or not. I guess that depends on whether or not I can sell something before the shop closes (May 28 or when inventory runs out). I'm really sorry to see this shop close.

maryb44662 05-09-2011 06:26 AM

After my youngest daughter was out of receiving blankets, I took all of them (a lot) and cut them into 10" squares and made a quilt for her. She still has the quilt. I usually pick up receiving blankets as well as any other flannel garments from flea markets/goodwill stores to made a quilt or use for backing. Mary

Barb C. 05-09-2011 06:27 AM

Please wash your flannel before cutting it. It does shrink about 2 inch per yard!

mhansen6 05-09-2011 06:31 AM

I am making one right now. I call it a floor quilt because it is a baby quilt that you can throw on the floor and lay the baby on. I made it out of flannel because it is so soft. I made one for my granddaughter and most of her pictures of her first year were on that quilt.

I have made a number of flannel quilts - front and back and have not trouble machine quilting them. I have done stitch in the ditch and stippling. Works fine.

grammysharon 05-09-2011 06:46 AM

I have the fabric to make a flannel throw quilt for myself. It is the most beautiful print, I can hardly wait! The "new" flannels are better quality than they use to be, they don't seem to shrink as much!! :D

I have made a couple queen size flannel quilts and have no trouble washing and drying them at home. I do have a front loader washer - not sure if it is bigger an a top loader or not. When drying I check it often, pull the quilt out to make sure the inner parts get dry and clean the lint trap. Really have no problems with the washing and drying. I do pre-wash all the fabric.
