No carpet! things fall in there and hide, thread everywhere that breaks vacuum cleaners, etc.

You can buy cushioned vinyl. I had that in my kitchen and it was great. I could drop a dish and it wouldn't break but it wasn't squishy to walk on, seemed like a hard floor. And it was warm to walk on barefooted.

Hmmm, you're in Michigan, I see, so you definitely need warmth. I've heard good things about cork. I have laminate in my kitchen and, while it's very durable, when anything falls on it, it's so LOUD . If it were in my sewing room, I'd get sick of hearing every little thing drop--a metal bobbin, a spool, a marking pen, occasionally scissors. But it IS a pain to get pins out of the carpet I have in my sewing room. It's a short pile, so better than plush or shag, and I can roll my chair okay. I do like that my chair doesn't roll out from under me when I go to sit down with fabric in hands.
I've often thought what my preference would be. I think cork would be it for cleaning, plus warm(er) and quieter than laminate.

Thanks for all your help. Today we brought home an oak vinyl laminate plank flooring. I hope I remember to post the photos in a couple months.

Definitely avoid carpet. Too hard to pick up thread and it does hide pins and needles (speaking from experience). Another option is the new tiles that look like hardwoods, maybe even put radiant heat under them.

Hardwood!!!! Carpet in my sewing room (came with house). What a pain.

I noticed that you live in Michigan. It gets cold up here. I guess I am a "neat nick" and certainly in the minority...but I would go for the carpet. I always make sure that the pins end up in the pincushion and the threads vacuum up (eventually). I sew in the room above the garage and it is a bit chilly up there. The carpet helps to keep it warmer.

First, Yes rollers takes the finish off the laminate. Second, my husband and I had a big discussion on this topic and he was right. My sewing room was moved to a bedroom on the top floor of our 95 year old house. Hard wood floors that had been partially covered with glued down linoleum. I refinished the floor the best I could and bought a wonderful low nap rug. My chair rolls so nice on it. Very comfortable when I am cutting and other standing work. It is beautiful and yes there are small threads and fabric ears but nothing rolls around or is the floor scratched. I found the rug at HOM on sale. It had a patchwork look to it and I knew it was right for my new sewing room. I just bought a Sharp hand Vac with a roller brush and it picks everything up, yes the long threads wrap around the roller but that I another use for the seam ripper. Don't be afraid of an area rug.

Never again will I put carpet in a sewing room. Holds to many pins, threads, etc. Hardwood or linoleum only!!!

I have hardwood and I love it. Easy to swiffer up the threads.
