What am I doing wrong? In the end it all fits fine, but it's bugging me. The rectangles are 5" by 2.75" and the squares are 2.75". I'm drawing the diagonal before I sew. Most the flying geese I made end up shorter than 5". What adjustment can I make?

I'm getting ready to cut the pieces for the last 7 star squares for the CW quilt....

Could it be that you are sewing on the line ? I always sew about two threads out, if that makes sense, and I am not certain this will solve the problem either.

I do sew on the line--I thought we were supposed to? :?:  If I sew on the outer side a bit--that will help?

I find if I sew on the line the material I am folding back is a fraction short, perhaps other members may like to comment as I am certainly no expert and would not like to give you duff information.

Thanks Katherine--if it works for you--it's good advice! :D I'll try it...

something is wrong with the .75 measurement...let me think on it

edit: try one rectangle at 5.5 with the 2 squares at 2.75 Barnbum, see if that works.

Always sew a thread or two away from the line. Sewing on the line will give you an exact 1/4 inch put when you fold and press the stitched line you lose a little and that little will make a diff.

Sewing on the line will make your rectangles a little short. I mark mine with a Sharpie and then sew to the right of the line... Making the "flipping" piece a tiny bit bigger. That works for me!!

Thank you!!! I wish they'd say that in the directions, rather than to sew on the line! Cutting the pieces for the last star blocks now...

So your goal is to end up with a 5 x 2.75 inch FG? So when it is sewn in it becomes a finished 4.5 x 2.25 inch piece?

If you are coming up just a little short of the 5 inches, then yes, you are taking too big a seam.. just move it over a couple of threads,, ending up with a SCANT 1/4 inch seam.. and you should be golden
