FMQers Don't Do This!!

2 Attachment(s)
I would imagine that most FMQers have done this to some degree or another, BUT if I can save just ONE from going through this I believe it is worth my time to post these pictures. I was on the very last edge of a wall hanging that I have been working on. When FMQing it is so important to make sure that your extra backing lies smoothly and does not fold over and get stitched down. I KNOW this to be true so I don't know if the excitement of almost being done or just pure stupidity caused me to do this, but what a nightmare. Now I must gingerly pick at these tiny little stitches and try very hard not to put a nick or a rip into the backing with my 'oh so sharp seam ripper' because that would just about be "all she wrote." Last night I picked a little out until my neck became stiff as a board and my eye twitched like my cat's tail while watching a bird out the window. It's going to take me awhile to get this out. Wish me luck...I'll post pictures of the finished product if I'm able to win. As the first picture shows I was almost finished. The second is the big OOPS!

Oh my word. Yes we do. so sorry!!

Lori S 08-17-2013 10:08 AM

SO sorry for your oops, but your FMQ is beautiful! Just keep telling yourself .. it could have been worse.

mandyrose 08-17-2013 10:17 AM

so sorry that happen to you....and I do know about that..........been there done that......onley thing my fmq was not as beautiful as yours..

MadQuilter 08-17-2013 10:23 AM

I did something like that on my last project and it chapped my bacon having to rip all those tiny stitches. It just sucks when we make those kind of blunders. Thanks for sharing.

cindi 08-17-2013 10:29 AM

Oh, my. So sorry this happened...and welcome to the "Well, THAT won't ever happen again!" club. It's always nice to have new members....but we never like the reason you get to join. Frogging stinks.

dunster 08-17-2013 10:29 AM

Yes, been there, done that, and sorry it happened to you.

bearisgray 08-17-2013 10:33 AM

Your other quilting is lovely. Unsewing is such a task!!

Quilter 65 08-17-2013 10:34 AM

Your quilting is beautiful. Sort of like carefully cutting out a piece of fabric, fussy cut, and then it getting on the cutting mat under the next few cuts and suddenly it's spaghetti!

ktbb 08-17-2013 10:35 AM

depending on how large the area is, you might square up that edge of the quilt and thus reduce the amount of unsewing you need to do. It will mean being careful when you re=quilt it...but when I did it, I squared up that one side, then put a piece of wash away stabilizer under the area I was re-quilting and it came out fine. the rest of your work is amazing....don't get discouraged over this bump in the road.

nancysp 08-17-2013 10:35 AM

I have done that on my last 2 quilts!!! Thankfully, the second one was caught right away and didn't have to rip out more than an inch. Your photo is embedded in my mind.

Maggie_Sue 08-17-2013 10:35 AM

Oh, so sorry, but your quilting fantastic!

CanoePam 08-17-2013 10:37 AM

I am another "been there, done that". Lovely quilting.

Pam

I don't FMQ but I have done this. I hate when it happens. :( It must be so much worse when FMQ because of the long line of stitching. ugh. I feel for you.

Stitchnripper 08-17-2013 10:42 AM

I have done this too! Your quilting is beautiful

Anael 08-17-2013 10:44 AM

I'm sorry this happened. I did it several times, every time I tell myself it won't ever happen again but it does :(

Akweiland 08-17-2013 10:54 AM

Your quilting is beautiful...sorry for all the little work you have to do.

DOTTYMO 08-17-2013 10:55 AM

It's happened to us all at some time.

patsynel 08-17-2013 11:20 AM

Your quilting is beautiful. I have done this before and it is so aggravating.

katier825 08-17-2013 11:31 AM

Yup, done that too. Now I put small safety pins around the outside edges every foot or so. It helps prevent it from happening.

I've even stitched my supreme slider to the quilt before! I only noticed because the machine sounded different to me. :)

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 08-17-2013 12:22 PM

Been there. Done that. Am a slow learner, so I'll probably do it again.

quiltingloulou 08-17-2013 12:42 PM

Oh, poor you. You are not the first and definitely will not be the last. I know you will make a good job though.

Tartan 08-17-2013 01:37 PM

Well at least it is all in one spot! I had that happen along an edge when I was stippling. I not only had to pick it out but tie off and bury all the ends and do a lot of reconnect segments and bury all those ends. I really really don't want to do that again!

LynnVT 08-17-2013 01:43 PM

Oh, yeah, been there, done that. Now that I'm using a Sweet Sixteen, I keep asking myself every time I sit down to quilt "Where are your edges?" Quilt I'm working on now, I rolled up the extra batting/backing almost to the quilt edge and pinned it in several places, so it doesn't do that. But recently I sat down to play with a "practice" quilt I keep nearby to warm up before my project, and I did exactly the same thing that you did. Ugh!

I've only been at this a couple of years and must confess I've "been there & done that" more times than I've kept track. You would think I'd learned my lesson! Good for you for "fessing" up & showing the picture!

Reb 08-17-2013 02:36 PM

I'm sorry as well, and agree your work is beautiful. It is worth pulling every one of those stitches out. I'm just learning to FMQ so you posting this was very important for me. I was recently told to hand or machine baste around the border edge inside the seam line so the border would not stretch as it is manhandled for quilting. Maybe that is not true? It seems from all the responses that you don't do that with FMQ.

Rose S. 08-17-2013 03:32 PM

Been there, done that...what is worse, I have done it more than once. Luckily, I have not had to un-sew too much!

Jim's Gem 08-17-2013 04:41 PM

I have done that too many times!!!! I usually get the corners though. Be careful taking it out, I have also accidentally snipped the backing fabric un-doing the stitching.

Monika 08-17-2013 04:44 PM

oh no!!! That is a beauty too!!!! Been there, done that!

Lovequilting22 08-17-2013 04:46 PM

Oh I am sooooo sorry! I haven't tried any FMQ yet, but that is my biggest fear. Good luck!

stablemom 08-17-2013 05:13 PM

The quilting does look lovely, so sorry you have to pick it out !

quiltjoey 08-17-2013 05:25 PM

Been there, done that, also! Sorry that happened to you... fee your pain...

I think it is always wise to machine or hand baste the edges...especially the closer to the outside that you get. I had even done that, but it was the excess fabric that folded over that caught me. Hopefully, I'll get it all out without tearing the backing...we'll see. Stay tuned.

hockeymom444 08-17-2013 05:57 PM

and isn't it funny that it takes about one minute to do this and about 100 days to rip it out???!!!! LOL

Gannyrosie 08-17-2013 06:09 PM

Thanks for sharing, I'm new to FMQ'ng so I haven't done this yet, but I'm sure I will. Just like all the other learning curves I've experienced lately. I'm going to take your advise and hand base my edges ( along with the extra fabric) and hope that avoids a big OPP's. Love your quilting, nice job.

quiltyfeelings 08-17-2013 10:01 PM

Ugh. I'm feeling your pain! Sadness :(

"I've even stitched my supreme slider to the quilt before! I only noticed because the machine sounded different to me. :)[/QUOTE]"

It's 2:30 Sunday morning and this just struck me as funny. Sounds like some of the things I do. I need to go to bed but just had to check in on all my friends here. Now I'll go to bed laughing.

. Thank you for clarifying. You reminded me of a time when I did that with my walking foot. Thanks for the memories!

Krystyna 08-18-2013 03:13 AM

Been there. Done that. It could have been worse. Get out your seam ripper and do what you have to do. The rest of your quilting is beautiful.
