a little over 2 years ago I was healthy and active. Now I use a wheelchair around the house and a walker when I go out, needless to say I hate them both.
I was not having much luck tying my Patriots quilt in my lap, moving around and having a hard time trying to get the heavy needle through. I can't afford a frame right now
I don't know what made me do it but I rolled it up to the row I was tying, put it over the walker handles. I can roll my wheelchair so my legs are between the walker legs I put my arms on the quilt over the handles and with my duct taped fingers pop the needle and yarn right through!

Wow what a good idea. Had both knees replaced and have been in the same situation. Keep moving and working on something that interests you. I bet you are a happy person. Just turned 60, and find I have to push to get moving. but I am glad I am on this side of the soil.

Well Done David, just goes to show that it pays to think laterally!

Another great example of "Necessity is the mother of invention." Great idea of using what is at hand.

way to kick butt!! hoping the best comes ur way :)

earthwalker 01-17-2011 04:46 PM

Clever fella! I sometimes have to use a walking stick...first week, I hated it...felt very, very vulnerable when out and about. Then I realised, without it...no out and about! I think of it now as an aid to independence...I haven't had to use it for some months now, which is great, but I know I shall be dusting it off again sometime. I just don't feel so bad about it, when I see it propped near my side of the bed.

tjradj 01-17-2011 05:01 PM

Hey, I firmly believe that if quilters ruled the world, all problems would be solved !!!! LOL

I was saddled with a wheelchair and a walker for about a year. Now that I am able to get around with a cane I use my walker to haul laundry to the washer and heavy stuff around the house. Sure comes in handy! The wheelchair went back to its original owner and I'm glad to be done with it, for now anyway. Glad you found a way to utilize both the wheelchair and walker. Maybe you won't hate them so much now.

Boscobd 01-17-2011 08:13 PM

Good to hear you found a way to continue your quilting interests! Keep on tying!!

marthe brault-hunt 01-18-2011 02:37 AM

When I read your post, the saying '' When life gave you scraps, make a quilt'' came to my mind, My mother raised me in a wheelchair, she never mentioned about it . I just keep a good souvenir of a person without disabilities because this is the way she chose to live her life. We instinctively knew when she needed help and when not to interfere,

Joy Higdon 01-18-2011 02:43 AM

Good for you David. How inspiring. Never give up .

MerryQuilter 01-18-2011 03:12 AM

My thoughts exactly, David. Using your "noodle".

michlowe 01-18-2011 04:45 AM

Darn, now I have to get a walker to try it out. LOL

Denise, This is a sidebar question. How did you do your avatar? Your kitty looks just like my Hobey. I have a GD who's a vet tech and kinda in the dumps right now having lost one of her beloved dogs at Xmas. I know this would really pick her up. You can email me at [email protected]

Roxanne 01-18-2011 05:07 AM

David,
Reminds me of my dear mother---she too was relegated to using a chair and walker in the house but insisted on doing some things around the house. So she was allowed to do the laundry. I bought a hamper on wheels that she could roll to the laundry room. When she took clothes from the dryer she would roll them to her den to watch tv while she folded them. She used her walker to drape hanging clothes over so my sister could then hang them.

Creativity.

Roxanne

I was thinking the same thing. I am nearing 70 very fast and am thankful every day that I am healthy, except for some minor things. The really important thing is to remain positive and not get depressed about our situations in life. After all we still have our brain working, and that is the most important thing, no substitutes for that; we can find assistance for legs and arms. Also like the duct tape idea for a thimble, hate thimbles.

#1piecemaker 01-18-2011 05:19 AM

Necessity is the Mother of invention!! Way to put on that thinking cap and utilize what you've got!

supergma 01-18-2011 05:33 AM

Good for you, David. Be sure to show us the quilt when you finish.
