Four Patch from Jelly Roll

I'm having a senior moment here. Do I need to cut my Jelly Roll fabrics into 2 1/2 inch squares before I make my 4 patches or is there a quicker way?

par4theday 11-03-2011 11:11 AM

strip piecing. Sew a dark to a light strip press to the dark side, and sub cut them to 2 1/2". I prefer this way to individual squares. Then sew the twosies together for the 4 patch.

butterjoy 11-03-2011 03:15 PM

Will someone show me pictures on how to do this by the jelly roll? Thanks.

This is how I do it. It goes together really fast.

Jelly Roll

I'm a new quilter and I love the precut fabric's. Jelly rolls are one of my favorites! :)

butterjoy 11-04-2011 04:29 AM

Can you show me? I read what you say but, all I can see in my mind is all these strips:D. I am a little slow and still learning. Visual helps me a great deal.
Thanks,
JOY

Sew two strips together. Cut into "twos." Sew two of these together into a four patch.

Steady Stiching 11-04-2011 05:26 AM

Yep...strip piece them....just make sure to divide the jellyroll into lights and darks and pair those. Dont do two lights or two darks.

butterjoy 11-04-2011 05:28 AM

Thank you! This is what I needed to see! Great teacher! Alright, now I can do it.
Thank you!

You can also use the same idea for a 9 patch, just sew 3 strips together and change from light, dark, light ..... to
dark, light, dark.

janeknapp, what program do you use to make the diagrams for the 4 patch? They are so nice and show what you mean so clearly. Just wondering if I have something like that and just don't know it. LOL

fayzer 11-04-2011 07:36 AM

Thanks for the helpful drawing.

Janlee43 11-04-2011 07:48 AM

fayzer 11-04-2011 01:46 PM

You have to go to the home page, scroll down and look for pictures. You will have to click on each one to see the pictures. Here is the link. http://www.quiltingboard.com/

Thank you, Jane. It is much easier to see how it is done, than just to read the directions. I am like NavaSota320. So me, it is easier. JoLe

You might have turned them off without realising it- top right, click settings, then on left (lower down) click general settings and read through the options there to see if you have ticked "view images" (it might be "view pictures" but you know what I mean...)

I'm using a desktop publishing program, "Ready, Set, Go!" on an IMac. There is a PC version. I drew it using tools, took a screen shot of the images, saved it as a jpeg, and attached it to my message.

For more information, go to:
http://www.diwan.com/

I use this program to design quilts.
This program can be purchased online and sent on line to be downloaded.

I'm a slow learner and need pictures, too. I still don't understand some of this - like the Hybrid View. Help, please.

Dodee 11-05-2011 05:41 AM

Oh, come on - I KNOW there are pictures here somewhere - people say so.

jeaninmaine 11-05-2011 05:56 AM

If you cut 4 (or a bunch) 2.5" x 5.5" strips. Stitch them in pairs. Iron. Lay one pair on top of another with colors contrasting or however you want them. Wiggle the middle seam til it sits right. Square off the ends. Stitch both ends. Lay your ruler on one of the seams you just sewed and line it up with the seam. Measure over 2 1/4" from the seam and cut. Repeat on the other end. you'll have two perfect 4 patches from each set of pairs you do.

If you're doing a two-four color quilt. You could use the full length of the jelly roll strips. and just keep working in from the ends.

Eleanor Burns shows it being done on her videos. On her jewel box tutorial, she shows how to take two pieces of material and get 4 HSTs and 2 4-patches from two pieces of material laid on top of each other with right sides facing.
