I was recently alerted this lady's work http://www.roserushbrooke.com/lydia-...uction-01.html by a good friend of mine and have been googling around looking at fractal imagery. The idea of creating a fractal quilt has really captured my imagination. I was wondering if anyone had made one, thought about making one, seen one or had any other thoughts on the subject. 8-) :-D

Here's what Google images came up with http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=fra...=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7ACAW_en&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u& source=univ&sa=X&ei=MMLgTd3HL5CZhQe5nsG7Bg&ved=0CD IQsAQ&biw=1916&bih=877 cool eh?! 8-) 8-) 8-)

And check out Rose Rushbrooke's Gallery http://www.roserushbrooke.com/fractal-art-quilts-1.html

wow, I have looked at a few sites for fractial quilts, and they look amazing, I would like to try one but, would need a quilt buddy to help me, The idea of completing one seems great, doing the actual work would require patiance and maybe a skill level I do not have, I like the idea of making one, but would really need a lot of dierection....I might buy a book and look at the pictures for a long time before I got the courage totry one.....they are amazing..

k3n 05-28-2011 03:32 AM

I think the approach is to come up with the design and then worry about the construction - wing it so to speak!

feline fanatic 05-28-2011 03:32 AM

Yes, I have thought about it but not making an actual fractal quilt, instead using the repetitive fractal designs found in nature as quilting motifs. I had posted about fractals and quilting a couple of years ago after an episode of the science show Nova did a whole episode on fractals. What is so mind blowing is that they appear everywhere in nature.

k3n 05-28-2011 03:38 AM

That's what I loved about them - the beauty of a mathematical pattern found in nature - I had a look at some freeware programs but I'll have to wait for DH to have the time to help me work them!

...and it was you originally posted that link, sorry for the mistake! Ghostrider posted a link to your original post. :-D

You know, in looking at your avatar quilt, in essence it is a fractal quilt.

You're right! That is a block bender from the technique by Margaret Miller. I'm now looking at mandala designs as well - amazing where google can take you! This is cool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g16B6...eature=related

eastermarie 05-28-2011 04:01 AM

There is a natural beauty in each fractal design. I use to have a set of lamaneted fractals from nature that I showed my students each year when we got to a certain chapter in science and in math. They are very interesting.

Looked at some of the galleries....holy cow! There are some beautiful pictures! Definitely something I'm going to do some research on in the future...
Thanks for the link and ideas! :)

DebraK 05-28-2011 05:40 AM

I love the way you push the envelope ;-)

ghostrider 05-28-2011 06:06 AM

Quilt University has a class on fractals taught by Lily Kerns. It's next offered September 30th.

Certainly an interesting idea, don't know whether I hate it or love it........

Fractals?---a new one to me----it takes quilting to a new, modern level for sure

Thanks for posting

ghostrider 05-28-2011 06:31 AM

Gosh, fractal quilts have been around since the 60's at least! There are many types of "math quilts" out there, all amazing.
A good place to start is http://www.mathquilt.com/

I'm in the process of getting ready for a party so not much time now but I'll certainly be checking that out later - looks fascinating! :-D

deranged_damsel 05-28-2011 07:46 AM

I have been making "fractal" quilts for years :D :D :D
A "fractal" is a geometric design where it repeats smaller, it can be found EVERYwhere in nature! but also paintings, tilework, weaving for thousands of years!!!
so Im not the only human obbsessed am I ;)

amma 05-28-2011 07:47 AM

I have a few ideas sketched out :D from when this topic was brought up last time.
Maybe it is time to get them back out again LOL
I can't wait to see what you do with this concept :D:D:D

I prefer 'focused'!

amma - that other thread was two years ago nearly girl, get to it will ya!

mtnative 05-28-2011 07:55 AM

Fractals are intriguing. Makes my brain hurt to think about constructing one.

 every quilt I have seen of yours is the definition of geometric. all of those wonderful hexagons and your avatar!

deranged_damsel 05-28-2011 08:02 AM

 and my avatar!

Be sure to check Fibonacci progression designs (great with log cabin blocks). Here are some of Caryl Bryer Fallert's efforts along that line.

Also Sierpinski's Triangle and the Lute's of Pythagoras are very popular for quilt designs.

You can easily learn to make nice fractals with the freeware "Gimp" program. I agree that they look great. My approach has been a little different in that I am printing the fractals onto material and doing free motion embroidery and quilting on each block before joining them into a quilt.

Janet My 05-29-2011 05:12 AM

OMG, some of the quilts on the links of this thread are amazing. Way above my level for sure. Eye Candy is the word for these. Love them!

sandpat 05-29-2011 05:16 AM

I'm not sure I feel comfortable with them K...they seem to hurt my eyes!! Well, not all of them, but some do! Anyway..I might try one sometime. I'm soooo math challenged though that they scare me a bit. I'm going to bookmark this thread though for all the great links!

I can't wait to see what you come up with though girl, whatever...I know it will be amazing!

Val in IN 05-29-2011 05:52 AM

I can appreciate the beauty of all art, but I guess I'm more of a traditionalist. They are very beautiful but a bit too "deep" for me.

gramarraine 05-29-2011 06:24 AM

To each his own, I am glad we each has the option of doing our own thing. I don't care for them but I can tell they take a lot of work. I don't think I could see the colors well enough to do that kind of work. I have a hard time with a scrappy quilt.

Deddier 05-29-2011 06:38 AM

You sure opened pandora's box - amazing, aren't they?!

MarieM 05-29-2011 06:49 AM

I was at our LQS yesterday and they were talking about Fractals. I may look into the quiltuniversity.com class. Have any of you ever taken any of their classes?

hawghugger 05-29-2011 07:01 AM

All I can say is.....I want them. Love all the patterns and colors. Just need to get the nerve to do it!!!! Thanks so much for sharing all the information and sites. Looks like I will be here a while.

cherrio 05-29-2011 07:12 AM

I'm fairly certain I don't have enough time left on this earth to accomplish something like that. pretty impressive look tho. Gives me a headache trying to figure out that many pcs. kudos to you that can.

b.zang 05-29-2011 07:16 AM

This is definitely the type of quilt that most appeals to me. I always have a fractal calendar and love puzzles. My first book of quilt patterns was 3D eye poppers but I still haven't ventured into making one of them.
Waiting to see what this group creates!!

mommafank 05-29-2011 07:47 AM

Thanks for sharing-----had not seen them before. A beautiful work of art for your wall but certainly not traditional. Bookmarking this one!

BJ SewKkrazzy 05-29-2011 07:54 AM

Beautiful, but makes me kind of dizzy!

trolleystation 05-29-2011 08:40 AM

I am speechless.

zkosh 05-29-2011 09:02 AM

As a math person I have always been fascinated by fractals and the first little original quilt I embarked on was a fractal design. My friends all know that I am fascinated by geometric shapes and designs so I guess that explains a lot.

These links show the most unbelievable work! I would love to do that with a couple of buddies or a class. If I started one right now I am pretty sure that I would end up with another UFO. My problem is I want to try it all! :D :D

Meanwhile, I would love some feedback on the Quilt U classes. I'm pretty sure that I've heard them mentioned here before.
