Here is a sample of a canning jar quilt (not done by me); I found it on line:
If you Google (images) you can find several more. They are made the same as Bug Jar Quilts. Here is a free pattern: http://quilting.about.com/od/blockof..._jar_quilt.htm |
Reading the posts gave me another thought. These jars do not necessarily all need to be canned things. I use to keep pasta in jars so you could use anything food related that you would put in a closed container. M & M's, mints, Reese's pieces, chocolate chips, etc. Is there a theme here????
|
I thought about doing the jars, but I ended up using the fabric to create baskets with the fruits and veggies in them. I used grass texture as the background and a basket weave texture to create the baskets. (It was for a pinic blanket.) I pieced the scraps to make a kid size blanket with applique ants. I still think the jars are great though...might go back for more. :c)

Aprons, potholders, tortilla warmers, potato bags. Anything for the kitchen.

I'm not sure what critters I could think of that I want to eat that would be that small but maybe eggs. Your quilt is beautiful!! Sue |

I'm new to the group and had never heard of an ISpy quilt. Can someone explain, or better yet, post a picture of one?
|
OK - does anyone have a picture of a canning jar quilt? I think I NEED TO SEE ONE!
|
i have purchased fruit and veggie fabrics and made place mats and have given them as gifts
|
I am about to make a jar quilt for my new house's kitchen. I collected only fruits, berries, and veggies. But I think I might go with just fruits and berries. Their colors are so vibrant, especially the blueberries.
Later I'll make a bug jar for my new grandson. Probably much later. |

With fruits and veggies and jams you could also make labels for each jar. Either embroidery or ink jet print.

You can find a picture of our quilt here:

I just made one. The pattern I used was: Picnic Time Quilt, by Heart to Hand. It shows fruits and veggies with a black and white border. On the border I used a brown basket weave with white. The size of this quilt is 57x57, but you could make it as large as you like.

And if you used them in canning jar quilts, were you literal enough in your interpretation to only use fruits and veggies that actually would be canned (which rules out lettuce and bananas) or did you just pick whatever was pretty and colorful? How many jars did you wind up with? The hangings turned out really nice and really did dress up the walls where all t he phone exhibits were. |
I bought a ton of the Farmer John fabrics and made a beautiful wedding quilt out of the Courthouse steps pattern my little hippie girl niece. I have tons of left overs and plan on one day soon doing a canning jar table runner with a bunch of placemats. Not sure how to do the placemats, but will come up with some design. I will use any and all of the different fruits and vegetable prints.

Our guild did several "jar" quilts. Some were fruit and veggies and some were bugs. I did one in honor of my cat. It is called Lacey's Pantry, Exotic Snacks for Kitty Cats. It has a new home in my goddaughter's Pet store. Since my cat eats all kinds of bugs, I thought it was fitting. Quilting "weird and wonderfuls" every now and then makes quilting fun.

Sue,
Thank you! It was fun to collect fabrics for my quilt. Sharon |

That's a great idea! |
I saw a cute apron that was made from strips of these fabrics

I stick to theme..just a personal thing..I have used the bug fabric for one and the candy fabric for another!!

I used the scraps to make an apron and chef hat for my granddaughter.

Sue I was desperate for a few more fabrics, all the fabrics are different. There are 96 mason jar blocks on the front, #97 is the label and I made it so that it looks like the jar has a label. I posted pictures of mine a couple years ago. Look under my bookmarks under my name "Feathers" and you can see them. I think I posted a couple days ago that the pictures are on page 2 of the pictures category.

Do you have a pattern for the canning jar quilt?

http://bugjarquilt.blogspot.com/ Its a very easy block to make. Try to choose fabrics that look like tightly packed foods would look in a jar. The finished block is 5 1/2"x10 1/2". My sashing strips are 1 1/2" wide, you could make them wider. The "jar" section is 5 1/2"x 9 1/2". Six 1 1/2" squares , 2 go on the sides of the lid,the other 4 are for the corners of the jar fabric, you do a folded corner(sew diagonally across the square and cut off only the middle piece, leave 1/4", fold back). The lid section is 1 1/2" x 4 1/2". I liked to use striped fabric for the lids when I could find the right fabric, you can have either vertical or horizontal striped fabrics. You can see a picture of my quilt in webshots. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...45965719cijUqr Sharon W. in Texas |
I did them in short jars, almost all types, not the lettuces. Created a border with them to go around a 2 1/2" red and white pieced picnic cloth look. Used the lawn grass fabric as the binding. Voila, picnic blanket.

My girls and I are collecting to do one when our bugs are done. I found some very cool basket weave fabric that we'll make baskets from, and some woody stuff that we'll make crates from.
