Those of you who have purchased fruit and vegetable fabrics (such as RJR's Farmer's Market)... did you use them for I-Spy quilts, or canning jar quilts?

And if you used them in canning jar quilts, were you literal enough in your interpretation to only use fruits and veggies that actually would be canned (which rules out lettuce and bananas) or did you just pick whatever was pretty and colorful? How many jars did you wind up with?

QuiltnNan 05-09-2011 08:45 AM

i wouldn't use anything that didn't fit the theme correctly, but that's just me.

nonymac 05-09-2011 08:47 AM

What is a canning jar quilt? My sister cans so that would be a good project to do for her.

Gizzy-Girl 05-09-2011 09:08 AM

I did a jar quilt with bugs a long time ago. Personally I think you can put whatever you want into canning jars :-)

retrogirl02 05-09-2011 09:39 AM

I didn't use them for canning jars or Ispys. I liked the berries, bought several types between the various companies that make them & use them in other projects like applique with scraps & some for pincushions, too.

They're also great prints for people making market bags to haul their produce from the farmer's market and/or grocery store.

lynnsim 05-09-2011 09:41 AM

I have used the veggie & fruit fabrics in jar blocks. doesn't matter to me if they are the "correct" canning fabric or not. I've also used them in pot holders.

retrogirl02 05-09-2011 09:55 AM

oooh, potholders would be so cute! Great idea, lynnsim. I have heard people talking about the canning jars that only want what is actually canned...it's just personal preference, I guess.

great aunt jacqui 05-09-2011 10:52 AM

Bought them for a canning wall hanging. had to buy 1/2 yd of each. Got quite a collection..only fruits, veg that can be canned.
But.. I have not started that project. I sliced a 5 in strip off each one to add to my I Spy quilts.

great aunt jacqui 05-09-2011 10:55 AM

sorry

We did one at church for one of our elders. "Canned " the appropriate fruits and veggies, designed baskets to hold potatoes, apples, tomatoes (they had stems and leaves). We also "canned" apple butter and jellies. Designed pint baskets too for any others that wouldn't look right canned.

Are you familiar with the bug jar design? Substitute fruits and veggies and in is a canning jar quilt!
I would stick to the ones that might be canned. Like the idea of baskets for the potatoes and onions, Numa! :-)

My swap is currently doing an I-spy a picnic swap. Basically anything edible but I do plan on making a 'canning jar' quilt with all things canned and the left over fabrics will be put in a ispy quilt. So I guess I'm using all. But mt absolute favorites are the munchies fabs..

SherriB 05-09-2011 12:10 PM

I have been collecting fruit and veggie fabrics to make a canning jar quilt. I will probably only use veggies/fruits that you would normally can.

wolfkitty 05-09-2011 01:08 PM

I have the fabric. First I did just blocks because I wanted to get working with it. But I plan to do a jar quilt, as soon as I find appropriate fabric for the lids - I'm trying to be too literal with that. But I may 'freelance' a little with what goes in the jars, if the colors need it.

Annaquilts 05-09-2011 02:19 PM

I bought fruit and veggy FQ but have not used them. I will use them for whatever I want including jars and I spy quilts. Since I have a FQ of each I will have plenty to do both. If I feel like it I will can lettuce and bananas along with tomatoes and candies. Oh also I like the idea, as mentioned in a previous post, of adding baskets to the canning quilt to display other vegetables.

I used them in Potholders with Canning jars on them. I did the usual canned goods.

It's your quilt. Put in whatever you want. I have made 2 jar quilts and put in oranges and cucumbers. My sister's quilt happens to have only things that you put in jars, but it includes nails and screws and chocolates as well, since she has those in jars as well.

We used a brassy gold that really looked like rings.

I did this with them:

My DH loves the Churn Dash block.

I used some that my friend actually grows, for patches in a garden-themed quilt for him.

I made a jar quilt....I love it and really don't care if some things (onions!) can be canned. I love the colors!

First time doing FMQ, too! I'm hooked!

I bought lots of the FQ's at Quilter's Day Out. Some definitely would not be canned; however, I found an applique basket pattern on line and purchased some basket weave fabric to make baskets to include on the shelves to hold onions, bananas, and apples, etc. I wanted more of a pantry quilt rather than just canning jars.

phatquilts2 05-10-2011 01:27 AM

UFO veg & fruits is in my to do pile. Like the "canning jars" idea (thanks so much) & could make the jars in pints, if i have any scraps.

my layout = attic windows, 2 different fabrics to depict baskets of fruits & veggies. right now, can not remember fabric mfg. but it is from a number of years ago.

Baskets are a good idea!!!! My DS works at a grocery store and I have tons of the fruit fabric to make him a jar quilt. i like the ideas of adding baskets, too. Thanks for telling about that.

I did veggies on my daughter-in-law's canning jar quilt. I gave it to her for Mother's Day last year. I added sashing between and jars that looked like wood and lids on the jars that looked like grey metal, with the background black. When I gave it to her I hadn't added the label and told her she couldn't take it home until she gave it a name, it became; "Pantry Raid" , cute huh? I have done another quilt for her out of just fruits and the Attic Window as the pattern. The jars are so much FUN to do and they are so CUTE! ! !

That is so pretty and cool! Thanks for sharing!

I just started collecting fabrics for a jar quilt. At a fabric store, they had a quilt that had munchy fabric and it looked like a bag of chips on the shelf. Was too cute. So I've been collecting food tabs and bug fabrics because I want to make a bug jar quilt too. I don't think I'll be too picky- if it's a food it'll go in a jar or basket( great idea BTW) .

CircleSquare 05-10-2011 04:43 AM

I love this idea of doing a canning-jar quilt! Thank you!! My guild's challeng this quarter is called "pot luck" and this will be perfect !!

JabezRose 05-10-2011 04:54 AM

Did one with the money fabric in the jars, really nice for that penny pincher in the family.

Numa 05-10-2011 04:54 AM

I managed to post a picture under "canned fruits and veggies quilt". Tried to do it here but I am not very good at posting pics yet. So I had to do a new posting. Sorry about that!

Our group is collecting sewing notions fabric and doing a jar quilt . Some are doing one shelf for a wall hanging in thier sewing room. I am doing mine in a quilt to take on my quilt retreats. Will add a chocolate jar.

dixiechunk 05-10-2011 06:18 AM

I'm kind of a crazy person - I will only use fabrics that realistically portray foods (ie no cartoon-y or novelty types),
foods that literally look like mouth-watering real food. But...I am not as picky about whether they are really "cannable". That's nuts, huh?

Nikki and Co. 05-10-2011 07:28 AM

I am collecting to make the canning jar quilt and will use what fits the canning theme. I have made several market bags with all fruit & vegie varities that are awesome. They would be great in I spy too, never thought of that one!

Parrothead 05-10-2011 07:34 AM

If I made one I would put only "canned" items in it. But the list is long. For instance a plain red for tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce, plain colors for jelly, etc. I like the ideas of baskets for uncannable things. (No that is not a real word!) My Mother, Grandmother and Aunts canned everything they could. Oh, the days spent peeling peaches, water running down your arm! If color is a thought I came up with orange, red, yellow, blue, purple, white, pink. Jar lids could be gray (silver) or gold. The problem I see with some of the fruit and vegetable prints is they are too large.
I bet some of our younger members especially city raised have never canned.

Kallen 05-10-2011 08:01 AM

I sure would love to see pictures of that quilt! Sounds darling.
I've made lots of blocks for a quilt using the fruits and veggies, but it is one of my UFOs from so long ago that I can't even describe what the block looks like right now. LOL But I remember it was cute. I would love to make a canning jar quilt out of the rest of the fabrics! Thanks for the idea.

This is the one I meant that I would love to see pictures of. Hit the wrong key--sorry.

I put tons of different foods in my quilt. I was going to make a canning jar quilt, but decided to cut 6 1/2" squares and sash them with black instead. I think it came out great!

There is pizza, pickles, potato chips, asparagus, peppermints, chocolates, cupcakes, berries, apples, Pixie Stix, beer, and other things I can't think of. Here's what it looked like on the design wall. It's all put together now, just need to quilt it.

emarkwood 05-10-2011 08:06 AM

I used them as a 3" borders for 12" white squares I embroidered with different fruits and veggies. Then I added another 3"white border and I am planning to put it together in the next two or three weeks.
