Loved reading everyones posts!
Honestly, I call myself a quilter. Creating quilts is just so fun, even when they are uncooperative. I really enjoy trying new techniques, so am always exploring. |
I do it all, but call myself a long arm quilter. But....I also hand quilt (when pushed) sew a little (again, when pushed) to
fix someone's problems, tailor a little here and there, and will re-do wedding gowns if I HAVE to. If you want to upset me, ask me to alter something (or sew a button on!!!) when I am fixated on quilting....I can guarantee you won't like what you see...:)...I think that everyone in my family actually believes there is a seamstress somewhere inside my now aging body...but there is NOT...nor will there ever be...:)! I also play the keyboard, the organ, the guitar, the clarinet, the bass clarinet, the oboe; I paint in acrylics and in oils; I knit and crochet. (Can you tell I don't have a REAL job anymore??) however, no one has ever asked me to lead (or play in) the Philharmonic orchestra nor have they ever asked me to have a one-woman show at any art gallery. So I guess, in the end, I am a LA'r by vocation and by avocation! |
I'm a Jack of all trades. I love to do so many things.
|
I am a Quilter. Plain and simple. I also sew, make jewelry, crochet, knit and paint. But I now define myself as a Quilter.
|
I am a hobbyist, but my favorite name is "Mom, Dave hit me for no reason!"
|
Wow - there are some accomplishing people on this board!!!!!!
I call myself "a human being" - I've decided that I don't need or want to be "human doing" all the time. |
In my sewing life I call myself a Topper. I don't do the quilting so I don't say I am a quilter. I do make a lot of tops though. Thats the part I like the best , making the tops.
Happy sewing topper |
I am a quilter. The Senior Quilting Club that I belong refer to ourselves as "sewers". I guess that makes me a quilter AND a sewer. lol. I don't care, as long as I get to sew. I like to hand quilt, and I like to piece tops.
|
I am a stay at home wife, and mother, and a quilter. And I love being all three :)
|
Is "Textile Artist" too pretentious?
|
At different times in the past, I was a seamstress, a crocheter, an embroiderer, a cross-stitcher, a macrame-er, a wannabe tatter, even a Tri-Chem painter (ugh, what was I thinking?) But I gave all those titles up when I discovered what I really am.
I am a quilter. My favorite techniques are needle-turn applique and hand quilting, but since I've been working at a LQS (the last 5 years), time is limited, so I do more machine work. |
I'm a wife, mother, gramma, great gramma, and an old sew and sew. lol
|
I'm just "Me" which is how I often sign myself. I do many, many different things and "I" am a composite of all those things. To me, an "...ist" or an"...er" indicates that to be your primary focus and I have far too many interests to be either.
|
Mary Lane, I would consider you a crafter, just as I do myself. I sew not only quilts, but other things as well, and that is crafting to me.
|
I very much like making up words like: moosh=kiss and so on, but the term "sewist" just grates on my nerves. When an email comes with that term, I delete it without seeing what it's about. I am not and never will be a "sewist." Don't get all cutesy/craftsy with me! (Can you tell I'm a Maxine fan?) What I am is a person who enjoys making household items from fabric. Some things are quilted, some aren't and I don't label myself as anything but a person who likes to sew and paint and scrapbook and.... :-)

I'm just 'busy' doing whatever I please.:o
|
In my past I designed and made custom wedding gown, I also did formalwear and costumes...guess I was a Designer/Seamstress. Some alterations and hems, I became a slave to idiots who thought I should work for free since I "just do this out of my house" (like it was easier there than in a storefront).
I did not touch my machine for almost a year after a "customer" threatened me and stalked me. (police action taken). Now I am a piece maker(!) and quilter, a student of all things fabric. Hello, I am Barb, lover of life! |
I am a quilter, but sometimes a costumer. I make costumes in the fall for Halloween (grandkids) and for Church pageant at Christmas. Otherwise I quilt. Much more satisfying and I can go at a pace where I can be more particular in the results.
|
I'm a skydiver who likes to pet fabric. :)
|
First & foremost I am a Child of God. Then I am a wife & a mother.
|
First of all I am a person, a wife, a mother to both human (that are grown and on their own) and a fur babies. Then I am a sewer, a quilter-both machine and hand, crafter, beader, gem hunter, crocheter, all around person who enjoys the outdoors but would rather be behind a sewing machine doing something. I have worked many jobs and done many jobs and my bucket list keeps getting longer and longer !LOL
|
I am a fiber artist. I make quilts (tops and quilt when double bed size or smaller), make quilted jackets, purses, bags, various accessory items that are fabric. Some I do for myself and some are commissions. I hand dye, do batik with wax and tjaps, discharge, natural dye, make and use screens to add and subtract color from fabrics. My regular Mon-Fri job gets in the way of my fun with my sewing machines, fabrics, and dyes.

I really like this one! I'm just "Me" which is how I often sign myself. Funny! Since my name is actually Mary Elane I often sign things "me" or "me and mine" if it is from my family. I have two aunts that have the same initials and they are Big ME and I am little me. Mary Lane, I would consider you a crafter, just as I do myself. I sew not only quilts, but other things as well, and that is crafting to me. Definitely not one I ever considered but I suppose it fits. One of my son's girlfriends told her mom I was crafty and could do anything and she would just take me a picture of the flowers she wanted for prom. Worked out well for all but I don't want to make a living like that. I am really enjoying your comments but they make me want to add more about myself. I will stick with the sewing related. |
I'm a quilter!
|
Very interesting thread... I have been called the hat lady since I created and designed hats... I have been called the quilt lady here in town since I have donated a lot of quilts for raffles and fund raisers.. I have been called teacher since I love to share my passion for creating and sewing. I love to sew whether it is garments that I wear, quilts that I share, or hats to keep me warm. I love the process of selecting, cutting and sewing to create something wonderful from that plain piece of fabric. My children and grand children all think of me in my sewing space creating. I don't have a word for it but that is what I do.

I refuse to be called a quilter or a sewist. I sew everything, not just quilts and frankly, quilts are the least fun to sew but they are the best received gifts. The term "sewist" isn't even recognized in dictionaries and just drives me nuts. So, I am pretty much a seamstress. I can and do sew most anything from upholstery to wedding gowns. How about you? I DON'T GLUE STUFF! So skip the sequined Christmas ornaments and such. |

WTG, Jenn! They'd never get me out of the plane while it was in the air. Congrats, on something that I'm sure is a great joy! |

Thanks for the NEW name idea---------I am indeed an "old sew and sew"! |
Oh, you all are so funny!! This is fun. I guess I call myself a quilter. But I'm really a "wanna-be fiber artist". I love fabric and fiber. I love looking at it, feeling it, creating with it. That takes in a lot of different things: quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting, etc. And I LOVE this board!
|
I call myself a "piddler". I just piddle during my day - moving from one thing to another - I have arthritis in my right wrist - so am limited to how long I can do one thing. So I switch activity about every 30 minutes.
Btw - what a bunch of talented people on this board! |
I am a craft maker. I have been a seamstress most of my life but now I dabble in a lot of things

I go by wordpainter and am a writer, albeit not paid YET. I am 72 and a retired nurse. I am working (sometimes..giggle) on rewrites for 3 different short novels, and have a list of e-mail 'fans' that like to follow my MUCH shorter writings that a friend maintains and makes pretty for me These stories go out over the internet in e-mail format. Much of my writings is of an inspirational but not preachy form. I've been told I paint pictures with my words...thus my ID.
I also make and give away cloth dolls for boys and girls (Usually aged 2 to 8) who have a devestating medical problem, and so far 117 dolls have found a child to love. The girl dolls take 12 hours to make and cost us $21 to $23 dollars each to mail out due to their size and having to ship via a 'mail-room'. The girls are topsy-turvy and all dolls have a simple embroidered face. One side wears a smile and the inside doll wears a sleepy face. I also knit and crochet, make clothes for great grands and occassional do embroidery. I am a wannabee drawer but that is more rare. Too many wishes and to few hours. I just suppose I am a variety of many things and an expert at none. I will try to attach a pic of 4 of the 117 dolls that went out awhile back to VERY sick children. Most of the dolls go out through the American Cancer society in my county and an adjoining one and they disburse them to these local areas free, otherwise we could not afford the expense. Long ago 2 children were 'laid to rest' with their dolls, so I am thinking they were loved. The girls are 24 inches tall and the boys are 28 inches tall. Think I have written a letter instead of a simple reply. Sorry. Vickey Stamps |
I've really enjoyed reading this thread... and decided to join in... hope it's not too late...
For a lot of my life I was Janice/George and Clarene's daughter/Nancy's little sister/Marcia's big sister... then David's wife... then Marissa, then Jonathan's mom (I was recognized last night as "Jonathan's mom" at the church where my son plays the bass in the praise band!! He's 29!!!) ha ha... I hadn't heard that phrase for a few years and it warmed my heart! I'm Mrs. Berrong to many of my former students, some of whom simply can't bring themselves to say "Janice." I'm "Clarene" to the love of my life (Clarene is my middle name... I'm my momma's namesake)... I was a sewer for many years... cute little dresses and suits and Halloween/church costumes... I LOVE cross-stitch and gardening... even pulling weeds!! But my most prized moniker is "quilter!!!" (and btw... I think if you've stitched a few pieces together and produced a quilt top, you are a quilter!!) Happy Quilting all!!! |
I call myself Quilter4Life....fits me well....
|
For lack of a better word, I am a sewer/quilter and best of all a MiMi.
|
I say, 'I am a quilter." I enjoyed sewing 5 vests, 1 tie, 7 dresses, one top (for me) and a veil this summer getting ready for my son's wedding...it was a lot of work, i had a lot of fun....but when I was done and the wedding was over...it sure felt good to be quilting again! I still do hem and fix things for a good friend, but I am a quilter.
|
I am thankful for my gift from God that I can sew/quilt. So call me blessed. I sew purses, pj's, trick or treat bags, christmas stockings and anything my daughter finds on pinterest we can copy, ha.
|
What do I call myself, that's a good question. I like the word sewer and I think that fits a lot of what it do. I sew clothes, slipcovers, curtains/drapes, quilts, etc. I am also a crocheter (is that a word?) and gardener.I don't do any of it professionally. Only for the love of it. Sew maybe I'm a lover :>)
