For fun: What do you call yourself?

I read a lot of blogs and articles on line. I find the way people refer to themselves and their skills/hobby interesting and sometimes amusing. So, what are you? A quilter, a tailor, seamstress, hobby sewer, etc...

I refuse to be called a quilter or a sewist. I sew everything, not just quilts and frankly, quilts are the least fun to sew but they are the best received gifts. The term "sewist" isn't even recognized in dictionaries and just drives me nuts.

So, I am pretty much a seamstress. I can and do sew most anything from upholstery to wedding gowns.

How about you?

pollyjvan9 09-26-2012 07:43 AM

I call myself a quilter. In the past I made many garments for myself, my husband, my children but I just don't enjoy that type of sewing any more. I find the quilting much more creative. I do some home dec sewing, but not much of that anymore either.

Quilty-Louise 09-26-2012 07:45 AM

I am mainly a quilter. I do not sew clothing although I DO want
to try and make some jammie pants for my daughters someday.

So I guess that I refer to myself as a quilter or hobbyist as I do
dabble a little bit in various little hobbies (like pincushions).

I like shocking people when I tell them I am a quilter, because I am
only 48 and some people think you have to be "old grannies" in order
to be a quilter.
Even the men I work with are comfortable talking to me now about
my new projects and machine embroidery.

I even make the men and their families little things from time to time.

Deborahlees 09-26-2012 07:47 AM

I am a sewer, for me the term quilter means an old fashioned term of 'hand quilting'....Since I do absoluty everything on my 'sewing machine' I am a sewer/FM quilter.....also a mother and grandmother.....:)

sewmary 09-26-2012 07:54 AM

Me? I am a person, mother, sister, aunt, etc. etc. I do not define myself by what I do but by the relationships I have with people. Probaly too serious for the question!

Tashana 09-26-2012 07:58 AM

I have many hobbies - quilting, sewing, pottery, crochet, knitting, stained glass, gardening. I sometimes do them all and sometimes I focus on one of them. For me labels are not important since neither of my hobbies is my profession, not yet anyways. I plan on selling my crafts eventually, and since I will be selling a mix I will probably be called an artist, artisan or crafter by most of the people. Some people call me (behind my back) makes-everything-by-hand-and-refuses-to-buy-mass-produced-stuff woman and although meant as a derogatory I am quite proud of it. Today I am a quilter, but tomorrow I will definitely be a potter because my wheel is calling me and I have an urge to make some nice muggs. My kids were on a breaking spree lately so I am reduced to a hodge podge of mugs that do not match. All the best and happy sewing from Tashana - quilter-potter-knitter-crocheter-gardener-crafter-happy-creative-person

i think alot of people started using anything other than sewer because sewer could also mean those large tubes underground that collect rain water and unmentionables. so, with the written word, sewer can also mean someone who sews. it all depends on the context on how the word is pronounced. that said, i have no idea what to call myself except one who sews, but that just sounds silly.

lynnie 09-26-2012 08:07 AM

Before retiring...on disability, iwas a seamstress and casket embroider. I usually did three or four jobs at a time.
i was also in sales for 25 yrs selling jewelry.
Soooooo, i still dont have an aswer.
Ut, I still wont do alterations or hemming (only for myself).

BellaBoo 09-26-2012 08:11 AM

I am a quilt guild member. That says it all. We volunteer, teach, share, and make quilts, plan retreats, have fabric shopping trips and hold quilt shows. I like sewist better than sewer. I don't mind if it is not in any dictionary.

Gramie bj 09-26-2012 08:21 AM

I am a Grandmother! according to my grands I can, and do everything! LOL I do all kinds of sewing, quilts, cloths, leather (chaps, tack repair, ect.) beading, painting, ceramics, furnature restoration, knitting, crochett, embrodie, tating, you name it I have either tryed it, it's on my to do list, or will go on my todo list. LOL

Lori S 09-26-2012 08:28 AM

I usually refer to myself and "just nuts". I figure that takes in just about everything.

:D:DYou crack me up. "Just nuts" sums it up for me as well.

Up North 09-26-2012 08:35 AM

I had a girl at work always calling Martha Stewart, Sorry I just do not like her or that title! I am a crafter!! I do all kinds of crafts and sometimes I am a quilter.

jcrow 09-26-2012 08:51 AM

I love to make quilts. I don't do the quilting part, but I put the quilts together, the piecing. I call myself a quilter. I usually say "I quilt". I know some people will say "you are not a quilter because you don't quilt your quilts, but I put the quilts together, so I can call myself a quilter. At my quilting retreat, out of 19 women, only 1 machine quilts. The rest send their quilts to a LA quilter and they all call themselves quilters, too.

huntannette 09-26-2012 08:56 AM

I just call myself...OnebigAnnette!! ha ha ha

QuiltnNan 09-26-2012 09:43 AM

i use quilter or sewist, as well as machine knitter

ArtsyOne 09-26-2012 09:49 AM

I gear myself towards the audience. If at a quilt show, I'm a quilter. At the yarn shop I'm a knitter, and at the Sewing Expo I'm a sewer. Working interferes with my life.

Chasing Hawk 09-26-2012 09:52 AM

Seamstress

plain and simple

Shana 09-26-2012 09:56 AM

hmmm...well it depends on the crowd :) to my more lofty friends I call myself "A novice of the hand arts" :) to everyone lol I'm a dabbler :) I dabble in that and I dabble in this :)

PenniF 09-26-2012 10:26 AM

Is "Empress for Life" taken ????

Skyangel 09-26-2012 10:40 AM

"Jill-of-all-trades" ?

I guess it depends what I am doing at the time. Primarily a quilter when I am sewing, although I do some home dec, and some clothing (alterations/hemming just to fit myself). At work I am an accountant, sometimes I am a pilot (private), sometimes a silversmith, and sometimes a home improvement diva!

MaryLane 09-26-2012 10:42 AM

Thanks for all your answers! They are fun to read. I admit to being referred to as a Domestic Goddess because I do so many things "the hard way". I, too, do all my sewing I possibly can by machine. But I do crochet, embroider, tat, garden, can, refurbish, etc...

My husband refers to groups I participate in as "little ol' quilting ladies". I, myself, am 47. I have been making quilts seriously for about 4 years. Prior to that I only did it when needed for a gift or home decor. I didn't consider it quilting because there was no handwork involved when I did it. I have changed my definition since then but still don't define myself as a quilter. I am a person that loves to sew and quilts are what everyone else wants from me now that my children are grown.

I am getting my first grandson, soon. I may actually get to start sewing again! Yay!!

LisaGibbs 09-26-2012 11:08 AM

I have a Mary Englebrite tin sign hanging in my "room" that says "Queen of Everything" since that is what I love to do. I sew many items plus everything from ceramics to scrapbooking. My dad calls me talented as does my husband and friends. I don't know, I guess I never thought about it. Awesome question.

MattieMae 09-26-2012 11:48 AM

I'm a quilter (I encompass the entire process), a knitter, and a sewer (sewist sounds odd, and a bit too artsy, fartsy for plain old me and my meager accomplishments). ~

GagaSmith 09-26-2012 12:12 PM

I am the queen of the seam ripper.

I am a wife, mother, MIL, Gaga and Nana, sister, aunt, niece and friend.
I am a quilter, painter, crocheter, sort of sewer (no clothes except really easy things like pj bottoms for grands).
I am a lover of life and very grateful and appreciative for all I have.
I am a two time survivor of breast cancer. (Not that it defines me but makes the above sentence more meaningful.)

Jingle 09-26-2012 12:23 PM

I am a quilter, I piece, sewand quilt all of my quilts, I have made more quilts than anything else. I started quilting at 20-21 and have made 108 quilts, 16 comforters, 10 biscuit quilts and 1 wall hanging.
Years ago I sewed clothes for my three kids, made doll clothes, including for G.I. Joe. PJs curtains, etc.
Again I proudly call myself a quilter.

luvTooQuilt 09-26-2012 12:24 PM

I am an expensive quilty enthusiast economy booster.. .. lol..

COYOTEMAGIC 09-26-2012 12:27 PM

I'm a "Fidget" sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroiderying, drawling, painting, gardening, wood working, beading. My hands have to stay busy or I drive not only myself crazy but others as well.

Annaquilts 09-26-2012 12:35 PM

quilteholic, possessed, fiber artist

nhweaver 09-26-2012 12:40 PM

In my many decades of crafting, I have been known as "the braiding lady" (from my days braiding at Canterbury Shaker Village), the hooker ( the rug hooking days), nhweaver (my weaving days, I miss my looms, we downsized, no extra space in delaware), and now I focus on quilting. I tell people that I quilt - but I do it all.

Love this answer too!! Anyone that would spend lots more to do all the work to make something that we are not even sure the recipient will like MUST be nuts!!

Look at my name, I think I may be a little nutty myself.

Jennifer 09-26-2012 01:43 PM

I am a crafter. I sew, quilt, make jewelry and love to make homemade items of all sorts.

tutt 09-26-2012 01:47 PM

I don't think too much about what I call myself, it's what other people call me that I worry about :)

lfstamper 09-26-2012 01:50 PM

I am a hobbiest...if there is such a word. I love all things crafty and have too many hobbies.

DeneK 09-26-2012 01:50 PM

I call myself a wannabe quilter when I am referring to my quilting because even though I have been practicing it for the past 5-7 years, I not only learn something new with each project, but don't feel that my skill level reaches the level of "quilter." At least not yet.

In other areas of my life I am a crazy dog lady (we have a pack of eight), reader of (mostly) science fiction, space nut (I want to help colonize Mars or somewhere), addicted to Mah Jong (not the computer version), happy retiree!

SouthPStitches 09-26-2012 02:01 PM

Probably mediocre quilter would be the most accurate

ube quilting 09-26-2012 02:04 PM

I'm a " I don't do that kind of sewiing" person. I make quilts in my studio I do not want to remake your drapes!

May in Jersey 09-26-2012 02:08 PM

I call myself a Quilter.

You just have to be careful who you refer to yourself. A friend refers to herself as a sewer, one who sews clothing, etc. She even uses it in her email addy, as in Annsewer which to most people reads Ann's sewer which is something completely different than Ann who sews.

dunster 09-26-2012 04:09 PM

You can call me anything, just don't call me late for lunch.

(Sorry, had to say it.)
