I prefer "child of God" for my label.

I reply in the context of the conversation, but I rarely define myself as in saying, "I am a....". When talking about fabric, for example, I might say, "I make quilts." I am much too complicated and interesting a person to limit who I am that way. Smilesssss........... and hugggggs.

Just Grandma! According to my granddaughters, I am a brownie goddess! Ha, ha! They say nobody makes them as good as Grandma. But seriously, I sew or quilt whatever the kids want or need. Quilts, pillowcases, hemming pants, mending. You name I have done it.

only 48 and some people think you have to be "old grannies" in order to be a quilter. I shock pretty much everyone I meet because of the stigma that you must be old to be a quilter... I started my 1st quilt in 2008. I turned 23 on September 25th, 2012. I'm the youngest member of the Valley Oak Quilt Guild. http://www.valleyoakqg.org/index.html I would just call myself "Proudly Awesome." |
My title is Textile Artisan.
As I deal in all things fabric and am the one ALL my friends come to with old clothes to be re-purposed into whatever I wish... |
I am a quilter and yes, I do 'old fashioned' quilting by hand. However I do piece by machine, but the word sewist just sounds weird to me. So I guess if I did other sewing I would just say I sew.

I plan on selling my crafts eventually, and since I will be selling a mix I will probably be called an artist, artisan or crafter by most of the people. Some people call me (behind my back) makes-everything-by-hand-and-refuses-to-buy-mass-produced-stuff woman and although meant as a derogatory I am quite proud of it. Today I am a quilter, but tomorrow I will definitely be a potter because my wheel is calling me and I have an urge to make some nice muggs. I call myself a "maker". Or a "maker of things", if you want to get specific. LOL
At work, I'm a programmer, which is a fairly rigid sort of profession, and in my private life, I'm all about being creative and completely free. I paint - on all sorts of things with all sorts of paints. I sew - from quilts to curtains to flowery embroidery to funky stuffed monsters and all sorts of things in between. I make sculpture of robots and fish and birds and all sorts of oddities out of fimo clay and things I find around the house. I do beading - I make very boring jewelry out of very pretty stones. I cook massive batches of mushroom barley soup and bake awesome pineapple upside down cakes. I make soap out of all sorts of things - beer, wine, Tang, babyfood...I'll throw anything in there just to see what'll happen. I do bookbinding and have used anything from soda cans to old records as covers. I draw on anything with anything (especially during meetings at work). I glue stuff to other stuff, punch holes in it, wrap twine around it, melt it, burn it, dye it... There is no medium I won't try out, and I have a list longer than my arm of things I still want to learn how to do. I've been told I'm an artist but I feel shy about applying that word to myself. To me, "artist" implies a certain level of mastery and I don't feel I've mastered anything except perhaps making messes - I am GREAT at that!! I'm just a maker, I make stuff out of other stuff. :) Oh, except I can't make squat out of yarn. I am pretty bad at crochet and ridiculously horrible at knitting. Not exaggerating, it's a complete disaster when I get knitting needles in my hands. I'm far better off using them as sculpture tools, or to clear a clogged hole punch! LOL |

I am Mommy, I am the Boss, I am his beautiful wife, I am a quilter. The order they go in changes with when and where. I manage a Domino's Pizza, I am Mom and Mommy to beautiful children ages 23 to 4. I have been married for 8 years to a wonderful man who just barely survived a heart attack. The time I have left from the rest I use to hand quilt, small quilts, usually.

I crochet, knit, sew and piece quilt tops. I am no quilter. I am new and have lots to learn. I just like to make things, maybe I'm a crafter, lol.........most of all I'm a wife, mother and grand mother. Just call me Granny, lol.

I'm a quilter - sew the tops and quilt the "sandwiches." HATE sewing for the home or clothing!

I call myself "a Jack of all Trades" I can do a little of a lot of things. LOL

I am a hobbyaholic. Interest are wide and varied. I am who I am and am called a lot of different names. I do what I do and most of the time am called 'nuts' for doing it! :)

I am a quilter. My favorite techniques are needle-turn applique and hand quilting, but since I've been working at a LQS (the last 5 years), time is limited, so I do more machine work. You've had an issue with Aunt Martha's paint pens? |

I did not touch my machine for almost a year after a "customer" threatened me and stalked me. (police action taken). Now I am a piece maker(!) and quilter, a student of all things fabric. I go by wordpainter and am a writer, albeit not paid YET. I am 72 and a retired nurse. I am working (sometimes..giggle) on rewrites for 3 different short novels, and have a list of e-mail 'fans' that like to follow my MUCH shorter writings that a friend maintains and makes pretty for me These stories go out over the internet in e-mail format. Much of my writings is of an inspirational but not preachy form. I've been told I paint pictures with my words...thus my ID.
I also make and give away cloth dolls for boys and girls (Usually aged 2 to 8) who have a devestating medical problem, and so far 117 dolls have found a child to love. The girl dolls take 12 hours to make and cost us $21 to $23 dollars each to mail out due to their size and having to ship via a 'mail-room'. The girls are topsy-turvy and all dolls have a simple embroidered face. One side wears a smile and the inside doll wears a sleepy face. I also knit and crochet, make clothes for great grands and occassional do embroidery. I am a wannabee drawer but that is more rare. Too many wishes and to few hours. I just suppose I am a variety of many things and an expert at none. I will try to attach a pic of 4 of the 117 dolls that went out awhile back to VERY sick children. Most of the dolls go out through the American Cancer society in my county and an adjoining one and they disburse them to these local areas free, otherwise we could not afford the expense. Long ago 2 children were 'laid to rest' with their dolls, so I am thinking they were loved. The girls are 24 inches tall and the boys are 28 inches tall. Think I have written a letter instead of a simple reply. Sorry. Vickey Stamps |

"Sewist" is a lot better than "sewer." Every word got a start somewhere and I intend to help "sewist" grow feet and then wing its way into Webster's. froggyintexas

I refuse to be called a quilter or a sewist. I sew everything, not just quilts and frankly, quilts are the least fun to sew but they are the best received gifts. The term "sewist" isn't even recognized in dictionaries and just drives me nuts. So, I am pretty much a seamstress. I can and do sew most anything from upholstery to wedding gowns. How about you? |
Here, I call myself a quilter. I like the word. It even sounds creative.
Other times, I am Yankee, Lefty, or doorman for animals. (five cats and a dog, and someone is ALWAYS wanting to go out or come in) |
Let's see...I sew, quilt, do crafts, garden, mosaics, teach womens self defense, do local volunteer work ....so I guess I would be called "Ditzy great grandma who does lots of stuff" LOL>..........
|
Well, I really don't know what to call myself..but everyone else calls me...
"She can do anything"... I cook, I bake, I sew, I piece tops, I quilt, I longarm, I paint, I crochet, I knit (which I don't care for) I embroidery, I play keyboard and guitar, I collect all things about sewing, had my own hair salon, did nails for a while...I make pincushions, I even clean house...when I'm not on the quilting board...I love God, my family, my grandkids, and my life..been married 50 years..always looking for some new adventure... |
I am just having fun whether I sew or quilt. can I be a" funner? "
|
I prefer the term "seamstress" as sewer indicates to my mind anyway, waste conduit. I think seamstress covers anything that is sewn, either by hand or machine, being it a quilt, a blouse, or slipcovers to buttons sewn on a garment. Seamstress is a time honored profession. I would call you a unique and wonderful person.

I've got 2 big dogs and baby sit my 2 grandpups. ALL DAY LONG, they want where they're not. I've begged hubby for a doggie door, but he's afraid varmits might come in. NO VARMIT in its right mind would come near the house, much less IN the house. |
I am a "stitcher". I don't like the term sewer as it is spelled the same as the place our sewage goes. lol I don't make garments any more. Quilting and machine embroidery are a lot more fun.

I love and agree with sak658's entry; although it depends on who you ask or on what day you ask for me. My kids think one thing; my friends think another; my husband thinks yet another ("road trip time" right in the middle of my most recent quilt design effort); the preacher and his wife still another--the list goes on. But the best part is "Grannie" to 8 grands and 5 great-grands.....

What do you call yourself?
I am a mother, quilter, carpenter and problem solver. Dog feeder, dog walker, mail getter, chauffer, maintenance person, cleaning person, emotional therapist for the children, homework helper. You name it~I do it!
In other terms~MOM |
Making COVERS
Does anyone else besides me make COVERS????
I am a "covers" quilter. I make pieced tops mostly for Project Linus and I like to think of those kids wrapped up in covers I have pieced. The last garment I made was a robe for DH which he loves and is on a mission to wear out! I hope he doesn't because just thinking about that slippery material makes me appreciate my quilt/covers cottons! I have made clothes for everyone in my family, especially my boys and myself. I never would take money for doing any sewing because that gave me to liberty to say "NO" to anyone who asked. In my misspent youth, I did some hemming and altering for friends but hated doing that mess so much it was a true gift of love. Pretty sure that ship has sailed, LOL! I used to tell my high school students I'd answer to anything except "Hey, YOU!" and "Mud Face" but I will probably answer to those now that my hearing is going according to DH. I LOVE to wait on my DH as well because he's so good to me. (Read prior posts to learn more about my jewel of a husband!) Like some of you lucky folks, my favorite name is Honey, Grandma and Granny! Can't hear them enough! Otherwise, I am retired and enjoying just being on my own terms. God is good! |
