There has been some discussion of possibly having more than one *block-of-the-month* each month. I'm opening up this thread for further discussion. After we all have our say perhaps we can leave it up to Admin and Boo to sort it all out for us. :D So ladies, and gentlemen (there's bound to be more than just Tim) have at it. Now's your chance! Let's hear all of those ideas you have!

Leslee 04-08-2007 06:49 PM

You mean like "Block-of-the-every-other-week" ??? That's pretty do-able for me. More than that, me maybe go nutz...

Yvonne 04-08-2007 06:54 PM

Oh, Leslee,

One can't go nuts when one is already there!

HAHA! Nicely said Yvonne!!! :D

I have been reading the other posts on this subject, and my feeling is I would be very interested in having 2 a month. On the 1'st and 15'th. That way if people wish to do two, they would have their quilt or what ever project they are making finished sooner. Just waiting to hear what will happen.

My opinion, if anyone cares, is have two a month, just don't break the list up into separate disciplines. We all can learn from each others methods. And if I, or someone else can't get two done in a month, the patterns and ideas are there for when we can do three in a month.

Besides, I want to see Yvonne's face when she sees she has to use Popsicle sticks, orange rinds, and silly putty to make my block.

two per month sounds good to me, also. for one thing, it really means three per month because i would not abandon the orginal BOM activity.

Assuming Admin says ok, if we post them on the 8th and 22d we'll pace ourselves more logically and not compete with the 1BOM.

The biggest "problem" is developing a system that offers interested players a fair chance of having their turn to pick come around in under 20 years.

I think we should make Tim go first, because his sounds toooooo easy. ;-)

P.S. to Yvonne: THANK YOU for letting me off the hook by posting first.

Can I ask a very basic question? I'd love to do this BOM thing but have never done it before. When you do your own BOM, do you choose an overall colour theme for your quilt because I presume that all the BOMs eventually go together on one quilt?? What do you folks do?
Thanks,
Mel

5. redwork
etc!

We all can make decisions as to what we want to do and what we want to skip.
Personnaly I'm comfortable with my pattern piecing & paper piecing skills but need to really learn & work on hand applique skills.

I like the idea of more than one block a month, but I think 5 catagories are too many, It would break down nicely into two or three based on your list. How about:
1. piecing, any kind
2. applique, any kind
Maybe 3. Other methods of blocks.

The list could easily be broke down to the different methods, and if someone wanted to contribute to more than one list, they can add their name to the other lists. Then we would all have choices and still get to do other things. I do mostly piecing and need lots of help in applique, so would be really challenged by applique blocks. One could come out on the 1st, the other on the 15th, or both on the first or whatever. I live variety. :!: :!:

Norah 04-09-2007 03:42 AM

Instead of having the 1st, 8th, and 22nd, why not just make the original BOM a piecing block, add the 15th as an applique block, and anyone wanting to move their name to the applique list instead could ask admin to do that or they could be on both it they wanted.

oooooooo ... confused already ....... head hurts ........ gotta lay down

i beg on bended knee that we focus on frequency and let the techniques fall where they may.

Oh, I agree with Patrice-too confusing!! I don't mind doing 2 per month, but I'll be starting my busy season real soon-besides running my business, I run our local farmers market, which keeps me soooooo busy.
But I love the fact that I can make something for myself every once in awhile!!!!

Oh, you don't forget anything!!!!! I guess I should of said: at least I'm sewing something thats not going for my weekly shows!!!

ceannastahr 04-09-2007 07:35 AM

I know that with everything else going on I can't handle more then 2 so the idea of 1 on the 1st and then another on the 15th works for me. As for the design I think it should be up to whom evers turn it is.

Now my question is does the person whoes turn it is pick both blocks or should we go to the next person for the second block.

If we go to the second person we could forseeably can get through the list in 1 1/2 years instead of 3

Knot Sew 04-09-2007 07:42 AM

Last time I talked to Boo she was thinking of having two people each pick one block the first of the month. You would have your choice or do them both.........this is so it would not drag on. I asked to take my name off list but will do whatever I feel like in the blocks, may be others who do not want to choose a block.

Tim,
I'm a retired kindergarten/first grade teacher. You can't scare me! I can manipulate popsicle sticks, orange rinds, silly putty AND top it all with glitter! I'm ready! Bring it on!!!

I vote for two blocks a month. Continue down the list and have two people post their choices on the first of the month. That way people can work at their own pace. I prefer to do both blocks at the same time so I can put the pink fabric back in it's box then until the next month. I'll have to paint Tim's orange rinds pink you know!

So you pull the old "Glitter Gambit" on me, eh? I'll come up with something, even if I have to get my 9 YO to help me.

Pat 04-09-2007 10:35 AM

I agree with Yvonne, 2 blocks a month at the 1st of the month so we have plenty of time to do them. I personaly have a lot on my plate every day. I work; get grandkids off to school & am there when they get home. I don't get to come home until someone gets home from work!!! It kind of cuts into my sewing time. But I love them.
Tim, I like your idea of the popscicle sticks etc. I work in a elem. school as a lunchlady so I'm around kids ALL day. I love it.

Admin 04-09-2007 01:11 PM

I don't think having more than one block per month solves the waiting list problem. It just reduces waiting period from 3 years to 18 months, which still seems like a long time.

Right now, I only see two solutions:

- Create a separate category for BOMs and allow many people to post their blocks at the same time. That way, we would have more than two blocks each month and anybody could choose to complete as many blocks as they want. Each BOM would have its own thread, and the only requirement would be not to cross-post in other people's BOM threads, so everything is kept separate.

- Have multiple nominations each month and run the poll. Everybody would vote on the block they like the most, and at the end of the month, the winner (maybe the top two) become the official BOM(s) for the following month.

I see potential problems with both of these approaches, but those are the only ways I see that eliminate the waiting list.

Yvonne 04-09-2007 01:42 PM

Konstantine,
Thank you for your answer. I appreciate you posting your thoughts about this matter.

:)

ceannastahr 04-09-2007 02:11 PM

Sometimes I can be thick headed so I want to get this straight in my mind. I'm going to use the 3 blocks we just did as my example.
so we have frolic, broken arrow and blazing arrow.

We choose from the list what one or more we want to do.
The first person to finish a certain block would start the thread example frolic BOM or Blazing arrow BOM ect. and all the block would go under there name.

Am I correct in my assumption?

Finger Paint, Tim!! It is the only thing you can count on when it comes to "the glitter"!!

Ok, on a serious note, y'all have confused & now totally lost me. So, I'll put it this way: I do not care how many BOM are posted each month, how many catagories are created, or how the "next to choose" is chosen. Furthermore, I do not have time to offer any suggestions on any of the afore mentioned topics. I will only ask, once all of these decisions have been reached, will someone just please be sure to PM me when it is my turn (I'm #13)? Because I'm sure with all of the new considerations I'll NEVER be able to keep up.

Count me in on the Confused Team... could be the 800 miles I've driven since Saturday morning... :?
I think I could go for 2 BOMs, and popsicle sticks & silly putty sound fun.
I'm not too good with the glitter tho', gets everywhere.
And at this point, there is a good possibility that #19 will be a 9-patch.

currently in El Paso, TX....

If you don't all wanna be doing 12" Hawaiian applique blocks when we get to whatever the heck my number is in this crazyness--all you stop drivin' me nutz!!!!

SandraJennings 04-10-2007 08:19 AM

Well......sounds like we have plenty of options to choose from...check your stashes folks! Can hardly wait to get started on any of the options. Just one question......Silly putty??? LOL

kathy 04-10-2007 09:02 AM

well we've got plenty of "silly" for sure LOL

ButtercreamCakeArtist 04-10-2007 09:13 AM

How how how long does a regular BOM last? I'm guessing 12 months. What if, after 12 months (if I'm correct on that one), a quilt is made? Keep on going, just make a quilt with every 12 BOM's??? (or even 16 months for 4 rows of 4 blocks???)
So, I'm just keeping to the topic (for once)..."Just bouncing ideas around here".

patricej 04-10-2007 09:38 AM

Typical BOM programs run for 12 months. However, can anybody say we are a "typical" bunch of folks around here? I think NOT. LOL

How quickly you develop a finished top is up to you. Consider the clever girl who made a whole quilt using just the Frolic block from April. Will you use just the BsOM? Will you do as I plan and add alternating blocks to frame the BsOM and expand the layout design? How big will you make each block? Do you want a wall hanging? A lap quilt? Bed size? Pillows? Table Runners and Place Mats?

I'm shooting for a nap sized sampler as a gift to a friend. I'm making each block using two or three different methods and color schemes. When one top feels "done" it'll be done and the next set of blocks will go into something else.

Because we are picking for each other and not swapping what we make, we don't have to worry about specific anything. Ain't it cool? :P

ButtercreamCakeArtist 04-10-2007 11:15 AM

It doesn't really matter how long the BOM runs. I love it. I don't have a lot of time to set the blocks into a quilt right now, anyway. I've actually thought of making a 2-sided quilt with all my BOMs? I really don't know. I can wait forever, well, maybe not THAT long, but ....I'm just having fun.

quiltnurse 04-10-2007 05:14 PM

why are we making this so complex? if we post 2 blocks a month is not that enough? I am so confused and have no idea what has been going on. I sometimes feel that I have to spend every minute on line to keep up. Pleassssse lets keep it simple.

Country Quilter 04-11-2007 02:42 AM

I think two a month....it will amaze everyone how fast two weeks goes by! So then being as I am next on the list, I would pick my block on the 15th of this month and whoever is after me on the list would pick their block on the 1st of next month.....am I right?

susan s. 04-11-2007 05:23 AM

I cast my vote for two blocks per mo. sounds like a happy medium to me. I also vote not to designate any particular "type" requirements on either one. It only makes sense that ea. block has it's own thread. Of course some of us will wait a little longer to post a Block but, that's all the more time to be creative, I say.

Since we're already giving poor Admin. fits, does anyone else feel a need/desire for more emoticons. I'm w/ Patrice in her wish for that little Fall On The Floor Laughing figure. ( Or should we start a New thread for this Subject)?

Oh!, to mellowyellow I noticed your question about color scheme in making blocks that go together. That of course is entirely at your discretion. I myself intend to do more than one sample of ea. block. One in a set of complimentary colors and another in whatever cries out to me at the time.

yeah, that's enuf. I hope it wasn't my post that brought this up, if so, I'm sorry. I'm just as confused as can be. I was just thinking...
I haven't even looked at the directions for April since the day it was posted. :(
I've been so busy with the kids. They've been sick, and I got it, too. i have to give the baby breathing treatments 3 x a day.
My head is spinning from all that's been going on. All I wanna do is shut myself in my room and make something!!!!

patricej 04-11-2007 08:33 AM

no worries. the april stuff will still be there whenever you get around to it. and i have it all, too, so even less reason to worry.
;-)

ceannastahr 04-11-2007 09:20 AM

I made a folder just for the BOM's so if I want another one I know right where to go
