I made a queen sized quilt and used glow in the dark thread to quilt it. I used some free style quilting and it turned out very nice. When the lights go out it really glows. I woke up every hour just to see it glow. I took a picture but it doesn't show up, I guess because of the flash. I got the thread at Joann's fabric store and it cost $5.99 for 100 yds.

beautiful quilt. I'll bet I'd be like you, waking up just to see myquilt "glow" :)

merrylouw 05-29-2011 02:11 PM

It's a beautiful quilt!

My DH wouldn't like the glow in the dark thread, tho, 'cause he likes the room very dark when he sleeps. lol

lisalisa 05-29-2011 02:13 PM

It's very beautiful.

To film the GID. You have to take a long exposure. You have to have the camera on a tripod, no flash and leave the shudder open for like 20 seconds so it absorbs all the light. Also helps to "charge" the quilt right before you hit the take picture button. I used a black light.

That's how I filmed the ones I did. And this is how they actually look in the dark.

What a fun idea. I've never heard of glow in the dark thread before. I may have to get some and try it myself. Thanks for sharing your idea with us.

And your quilt is lovely!

AnnieF 05-29-2011 02:19 PM

Did you machine quilt using the thread or is it the type you can only hand quilt with?

blueangel 05-29-2011 04:01 PM

I guess I didn't know they made glow in the dark thread.

jdiane318 05-29-2011 04:03 PM

glad you had good results. I quilted my great-nephew's bug jar quilt with that thread and I couldn't see much glow.

alikat110 05-29-2011 04:40 PM

Don't know much about the thread, but I love the quilt.

Beautiful quilt. What is the pattern, if you don't mind sharing? I don't think you can wrong with batiks.

Justok 05-29-2011 08:27 PM

The pattern is Labyrinth by Debbie Maddy. It was very easy and done with no Y seams.

irishrose 05-29-2011 09:50 PM

Thank you. I found the pattern at Keepsake Quilting online. Now to make a decision whether this the one I want for my August quilt. I think so. Thank you for posting yours.

Thanks for the great idea. I'm making a tee shirt quilt for my daughter and since her bedroom ceiling is decorated with glow in the dark stars, this would be perfect! I've seen the thread but never made the connection until you mentioned it. Thanks!!!!

That would be fun for a child (and me, too!) That quilt is just beautiful even if we can't see the glow.

Scraps 05-30-2011 04:12 AM

patchsamkim 05-30-2011 05:43 AM

I have a spool of the glow in the dark thread...but really didn't know what to do with it...it was bought with the idea to use "sometime"...now I can't wait to try it!

lindy-2 05-30-2011 06:02 AM

cool pretty quilt

mary705 05-30-2011 06:09 AM

I'm working on a little girls quilt in primary colors (started it before baby was born, and they waited to find out sex) and I'm quilting it with the glow in the dark thread. After it has been in the light all day, it really does glow in the dark when all the lights are out.

I also got the thread at JoAnns when they had ALL thread at 50% off, that is when I buy the specialty threads.

carolstickelmaier 05-30-2011 06:10 AM

I once did an outline stitch of "spiderman" on a white tee shirt for my small grandson. He loved, loved, loved it. Even after the "glow" had been washed out he said he could "see" spiderman. It was the best thing he ever got from me..even better than the twin size spiderman quilt. He spend many hours in closets and dark rooms that year. Sometimes I wonder how I did it.

mimicrystal 05-30-2011 06:30 AM

thats funny...i think my grandson would like something like that...oh and I love that quilt...beautiful

Linn 05-30-2011 08:22 AM

I have been wanting to try some of that thread. An ebay seller named threadsrus has 5 spools for $5.00 and its made by coats and clark.

Jersey Gal 05-30-2011 08:43 AM

Your quilt is gorgeous. Glad to know they carry glow in the dark thread.

kwilter 05-30-2011 08:44 AM

Very clever idea for your lovely quilt. BTW, I made an autumn quilt for my son and he reports that during cold weather when the air is dry, static makes the metallic thread I used spark. He wanted to know if this is dangerous. I told him no more dangerous than having one's hair stand up! LOL
