Goodwill find update!
OH my God! My husband is going to kill me or at the very least take my car keys away. Went to Goodwill again this morning. I came home with 67.5 yards of more quilt shop quality fabric for $1.99 per yard. There was even flannel this time. None of the cuts were less than 7 yards. I have never seen this much material at this Goodwill. I have spent more and got more fabric in the past 4 days than I have gotten the entire time I have been quilting. I have gotten a total of 170 yards of fabric. Somebody tell me not to keep going back. I don't need more, I can't afford more but how can you turn this down. My Husband is out of town until Sunday. After I break the new fabric to him I will have him post pictures. Happy,Happy dances!
Congratulations! I don't want to be a party pooper but make sure to quarantine it until you get it all washed and dryed in case of guests.
Why would you tell him???? Him being out of town is the perfect time to get it integrated into your stash and he will never be the wiser! It's like when I used to have a shoe obsession: I would purchase the shoes, leave the box at the store, put the bag into my trunk, wait until nobody was home and then bring the shoes in and put them in my closet. Nobody knew that they were new shoes except for me!!! Fortunately, I don't have to hide my purchases from my current better half!!
OH My god your going to need help! its way to long til Sunday! You won't be able to resist the call of the Goodwill! You need DuckTape and a friend so your Hubby will listen while you explain!LOL
I don't think I could resist going back.
For the price you are paying, you can sell any fabric you don't want online and more than break even on it. Also, compare this to the cost of a therapy appointment. This is fabric therapy! Or, consider charitable donations for any fabric you don't want. A lot of charities can't afford to buy fabric, and this way you can give them lots more than they could purchase if you gave them the money. |
How about this idea? Can you sort out the fabric that you absolutely love from the fabric that you think you might not ever use, and sell that so-so fabric on the quilting board here. If you sell it for say $3.00 / yard, you should be able to recoup a lot of the money that you paid out. That way you can look at the situation as a win-win for both of you! Would that idea placate your hubby?
How lucky you are, I would not have passed it up either!
I saw take advantage of a good opportunity when you can. I have fabric I purchased 20 years ago because I knew we would be moving to Maine and I was able to get great deals. I am so glad I did. I use my stach all the time.
I would not be able to resist no matter how big my stash was! Do post photos , so we can see this great find! I am so jealous !My Goodwill never has fabric, must be they send it all to your location.
If you need your DH to post pictures, then you have to tell him. If you can post pictures yourself, then you don't have to tell him. It's not a necessity for us to see the fabric unless you do want to sell it.
Congrats!!!

Somewhere, I think on Youtube is a video about hiding fabric. Perhaps someone can direct you. Trick here is to learn to post your own pictures and he'll never know the difference. |
You can't pass up a deal like that. Our thrift stores never have fabric, but if they did, I would consider buying it.
Having stash is a very good thing!! It's the week after Christmas and my discretionary funds are depleted at the moment. I have a quilt I have to make and thinking that I had no fabrics in the colors I need, I went to dig through my stash anyway. Low and behold I have enough in the right colors to make at least two quilts! And it's all from fabrics I was not likely to ever use. Just goes to show that every piece we collect will come in handy just when we need it. Rejoice that you have it at $1.99 and not $12.99 per yard. Your DH should be proud of you NOT angry!!! Besides, the more fabrics you have to choose from...the more creative you can be. Have fun!
Where is this Goodwill? You hit the jackpot! The Goodwill stores near me rarely have something so wonderful ... very little fabric, if any at all ... and that price is too good to be true. I envy you. Enjoy!!
Hmmmm..... southeast Wisconsin to west central WI. Maybe I need a road trip. :)
First make him a quilt, then make another big beautiful one to sell and you will probably recoup all your money. When you really start using your stash you will be happy happy happy you got all those bargains.
Apparently your Goodwill is much better than our Goodwill. The only thing even close to fabric at ours is usually old worn out curtains that are labeled as fabric. We just have junk. That would be amazing to find that much good fabric for that price. I certainly wouldn't tell him about the quantity; might be too much for him to take.

As for your husband, I would tell him that you got an AMAZING deal on some fabric at Goodwill and leave it at that. ;) |
I tell DH right away, but then I take him to the computer and show him that I'm selling on the QB the fabrics that I can live without, so I can keep the ones I love for free. That does make him happy - especially when I show him my sale, "see here's the last Paypal payment that reimburses me every dime. Now I can either keep the rest, because it's free or sell a bit more and get enough money to go back and do this again." He usually says "sell a little more, so you can go back again. That way he knows it won't cost him next time around either. Try it! It works! (And of course, we all win@!)
p.s. my Goodwill's around here never have any great finds like that. |

I have four within a five mile radius of my home and never see anything like fabric, cool sewing machines, anything at all, darn it!
I have never seen fabric in my local Goodwill. Though I once got a package of batting for a buck.
I have seriously got to move...we don't even have a Goodwill..and the thrift stores we do have...well..NO fabric..they ship it all to Mexico Missions! No kidding...they brag about that...
I have never seen material here like this. It looks like it all came right off the bolt. I would really like to know where they are getting it from. Usually all we have is a couple of very small cuts. I'm wondering if maybe they got it from a Quilt Shop closing. I find it hard to believe that this was all privately owned.
You are very lucky!! I live in central New Jersey and my Good Will store never has material - at least during the three or four times a year I drop off stuff a drop in to see what's for sale. Maybe the trick is to go more often. LOL
Congratulations! I have never found any quilting fabric at any of the Salvation Army/Goodwill type shops. Last year I did find some drapery fabric. So I say you did Wonderful!!!! If your dh complains just figure out what all that fabric would have cost you at a quilt shop price. If you truely can't afford the expense then go ahead and sell some that isn't your favorite here on the boards. That way both your dh and those who purchase some of it from you will be happy.
But I say KEEP it if you can. You will be able to make gifts, or donate quilts or fabrics to worthy causes and you will feel great about the wonderful deal you got on the fabrics. Just enjoy your windfall!!!!!!! Kat |
Sorry, can't er, won't help you. If I lived close to you I would be there also. Lucky you.
Enablers, enablers, enablers!! But I would have done the same except I have no hubby to tell! HeHe. I totally agree that if you don't want or need it all, you can definitely sell it here and break even and maybe make a little more "spare change" for the next time you find a great deal!
I could not resist that deal either!
How can you afford to pass up a deal like that and I would be back there again to see if any more comes in. Where are they getting it from? Lucky you. Maybe DH will be happy at how much you saved him. I know that's a stretch but it could happen then he'll take the keys to the car. Good Luck. Sue
I think it's great! Look how much it would cost if you went to LQS!! As long as your using it. Wonderful! I wish I'd find that! Not many places up here to even buy fabric!
Can u say jack pot!! :) |
sometimes a good deal is hard not to pass it up ,i think you did great keep checking in that lucky goodwill store
I donate fabric to the Goodwill here, but have never seen any in the store. I look all the time, but it does not make sense -- donate because I have too much and look because I want more.
congrats, the most I every find is maybe a 3 yd piece and only 1 at a time.
yep, leave it outside, bring just what you can wash in at a time.....lice and bed bugs abound. Must be really vilagent about this.
nice of you to be purchasing agent for the quilting board. and working only for commission ;) TYVM

What great deals! I stop at our Goodwill frequently and they never have fabric. There's 1 or 2 small shelves with an assortment of craft items but never anything I want. Congrats on your great finds!
Wow! I am green with envy! There is a GoodWill store about a block from our house. The very first day they opened I bought a quilted bedspread, round ruffled pillow, and two pair of lined, pleated drapes, all made from the very best fabric, in a beautiful yellow background floral pattern--all for $40!!! I decorated my bedroom around it!
But evidently someone told them this was way too cheap, because ever since the opening day they have had nothing but JUNK, and it is priced as if it were made of spun gold! The only thing I ever buy there now men's shirts, which I cut up for quilt fabric. (Have made a couple of really pretty plaid quilts from them..for a little bit of nothing!) Enjoy your treasure, and if you decide you can't use all of it, sell some of it. Good luck! |
