Great tip for 1/4 seam.

Bonnie Hunter blogged about this tip and I tried it and it works the best of all I've tried. Use the Command Strips as the sewing guide. No sticky on the machine and easy to take off. I have the 1/4 food with metal side guide but I like this much better. I can make the guide as long as I need, not just length of the foot. But I found an extra plus to this. If you can see the thread behind my needle the strip holds the thread out of my way after I cut it. I tend to get the thread in my way when I'm starting a new seam.

Bellaboo-how do they attach to the machine without leaving residue?

Thanks!

What are Command Strips?

snipforfun 09-13-2012 03:05 PM

I am a big fan of Command strips!

AlienQuilter 09-13-2012 03:26 PM

I haven't heard of command strips. Sounds like something I need. My 1/4 foot with guide actually twists my fabric and makes a very unstraight line. Something to do with the feeddogs.

lynnie 09-13-2012 03:31 PM

They vo up, hold your and dont leavee marks.

Great tip & thanks for sharing. I was struggling with the dreaded quarter inch earlier today. That must be a pretty large command strip you have pictured. I think the ones I have are much smaller, but this looks worth a trip to the store to buy a larger size.

Tashana 09-13-2012 04:03 PM

You are a genius! I will do that as soon as I find my command strips. I use them to hang stockings at Christmas and they have never marked my walls or chipped paint. THANK YOU!

Jo M 09-13-2012 04:19 PM

Great tip. Thanks for passing it along. I am sooo going to do this.

BellaBoo 09-13-2012 04:31 PM

I bought the package of the large refill strips. You pull the tab and the strip removes from whatever it is stuck to with no residue. You can butt two strips end to end to make it extra long. Most all stores have them, even grocery stores. They have been on the market for over five years.

lfstamper 09-13-2012 04:36 PM

I think you find them in the picture section at Michael's, Joann's Hobby Lobby, etc. Great tip!

Found these coupons:

Walmart here has a big selection and lots of refill sizes. Around Christmas season there is usually a display next to hanging decorations. For some reason if they are in the Christmas section they are 50% off after Christmas. I stocked up last Christmas sale. I bought all that was left. I have five or more packages of each size hook plus refills. I doubt I need to buy more for years! and I noticed they cost more this year.

Mariposa 09-13-2012 04:56 PM

Thanks for the tip! :)

Thank you for sharing that great tip!

Neat tip. Thanks for sharing.

I've never heard of command strips but I need to try them.

Silver Needle 09-13-2012 07:07 PM

I used the hooks on the wall to hang up most of my rulers but never thought of the strips for this. My treadle sewing machines have no mark so this will work great on them!

Val in IN 09-13-2012 08:30 PM

Thanks for the GREAT tip! I have some left over from some Command hooks that I bought. I'm going to try this ASAP:thumbup:

May in Jersey 09-13-2012 08:41 PM

Great idea, eliminates the need to have a quarter inch foot for each of my machines.

Toni C 09-13-2012 11:28 PM

Oh I didn't know they had refill strips Great Idea!!

BRenea 09-14-2012 01:04 AM

Love this idea! I have been using small stacks of sticky notes or painter's tape for this purpose, but this seems to be a much better solution.

sandy l 09-14-2012 03:04 AM

Thanks for a great tip. Command strips are going to be on the shopping list today:)

Sande 09-14-2012 03:17 AM

What an excellent idea! I love command strips and use them all the time. I have lots of extra strips so I am definitely going to try this. Thank you for the tip.

Xtgirl, the strips are designed to be easily removed without leaving any residue

Here's the link to the Command website:

This strip would go right over my bobbin case so I would have to remove it every time I need a new bobbin.. Will the strip stick multiple times or would I have to replace the strip each time?

ranbro 09-14-2012 03:19 AM

Great tip--which size did you use please?

Sande 09-14-2012 03:20 AM

P.S. the Command strips are the adhesives that are packaged with the hooks.

mjsylvstr 09-14-2012 03:26 AM

what a great idea. I was just going to order another 1/4" guide and the worse part of ordering this is that it only comes with the guide ruler. One can't buy just the strips......going out today and buying the Command Strips.

thanks for the tip, MaryJane

I thought those Command strips were rather expensive. I stack strips of blue painters tape on top of each other to get the height I need, and it doesn't leave any residue and comes off when you want. I couldn't sew without my roll of blue painters tape, probably my most valuable "tool" in the sewing room.

Thanks for the tip!

Same here. I have a Babylock Espire. If it looses it's stickyness quickly, then it would not be cost effective. My Babylock has a terrible problem with the 1/4" foot with guide. It's at war with the feeddogs. A real pain. I have to use other means to sew long strips and this sounds like a good idea! Except for the placement of the bobbin case.

fayefromfla 09-14-2012 04:24 AM

thanks for the tip..I am always in search of ways to help with the 1/4 inch accuracy.

thanks for the coupons

This is a great tip and so thank you for showing us where to get the coupons. After cutting the fabric, sewing the 1/4 in seams is my next problem :-/ I have the foot, I have a short line on my machine -BUT !!!!!!! I'll get this quilting stuff down pat sooner or later, by cracky!!!!! Slow learner, been muddling along with quilting for years. Still I'm happy cuz I love it.

Sallyflymi 09-14-2012 05:48 AM

Thank you for sharing this great idea.

LisaGibbs 09-14-2012 06:19 AM

What a super idea. I use them all the time at the holidays to hang stockings and wreaths but never thought of this idea. I also have thread issues sometimes and that makes it double worth the trip to Walmart. Since another tip this morning with sandpaper on rulers and now this seems like a good day to be on the board!! Thanks for sharing.
