Isn't it irritating when this happens??? I think my machine is possessed... It's sewing fine then... THAT happens on the bottom! It's ok, I'll fix it... I just had to walk away from it for a moment....

All that wasted thread.....

I suspect your top thread wasn't between the tensions discs properly. Don't despair.

Chicca 10-15-2011 11:26 AM

While learning to free motion quilt, I have seen far to many of these "thread arrangements". But you are correct aside from a waste of thread, it is definetely fixable. Thank you for sharing and I hope that you have no more of this type of experience.

Isn't it great to have a place where you can vent, and everyone understands your pain!

Possibly. That's why I called it possessed lol.... Sewing fine then that darn tread hops out of some proper place .....

And it's exactly why I'm afraid to try free motion quilting..... One day though!!! Soon!

sewwhat85 10-15-2011 11:43 AM

i would quess that the thread jumped out of the pick up lever

DogHouseMom 10-15-2011 11:45 AM

Ahhh ... yes. Bobbin vomit. I've made some of that :)

quiltingcandy 10-15-2011 11:59 AM

A true confession here- sometimes I have to threaten my machines into behaving. If I feel extremely miffed, then I threaten them with a crow bar, otherwise, I am going to sell them to someone that does't love and care for them like I do. Then after a sip of something soothing, they improve their behavior.

(Since I don't have a crow bar - or if we do, I have no idea where it is- they don't know it would never happen.)

QuiltnNan 10-15-2011 12:46 PM

yikes, that's pretty ugly!

Podunk Princess 10-15-2011 12:49 PM

Yikes, I hate it when that happens!

grann of 6 10-15-2011 01:08 PM

I have learned to recognize the sound of when my thread comes out of the upper hook. This happens to me often with one of my machines.

texpat45 10-15-2011 01:26 PM

That's a familiar sight for me, too. All that lovely thread wasted...so sad. On the brighter note...I just love that fabric!

Ive learned to listen for THAT sound too.... The frustrating part is when I mentioned my tread doing this to my dealer, he acts like I'm the crazy one!!!!! It's making me feel alittle better to see it's not ME... The thong that really drive me bonkers is I am suppose to be able to walk away and let it sew... Can't do that and listen too.....

I'll post a pic IF I ever finish this project

Tartan 10-15-2011 02:11 PM

Thread booger, thread snot, thread vomit....Yep we've all had our share. It usually happens to when you have only one spool of really special thread that you are trying to finish your quilt with.

quiltlonger 10-15-2011 02:27 PM

I put it out in the trees and the birds love it for there nest! and pieces aren't big enough to tangle them by the time I'm down ripping! recycle !!

That is the perfect name for this !

Sandee 10-15-2011 04:49 PM

The other day my bobbin thread wrapped around the wheel on the side & pulled off about 3/4 of a new cone of thread into a big bird's nest before i even noticed....another waste of thread!

Granny Quilter 10-15-2011 06:02 PM

I hate when that happens! LOL It happens all too often.

sculham 10-15-2011 07:20 PM

I seem to get those lovelies when I am sewing over the speed limit!

mummadee 10-16-2011 03:22 AM

Ooops. Time for a "scarlet O' Hara" moment. I'll think about it tomorrow.

SunlitenSmiles 10-16-2011 03:43 AM

as far as FMQ ..... there is nothing to fear but fear it's self..... and on the up side - spagettie like that is easy to remove.

carolaug 10-16-2011 03:46 AM

Oh that looks so familar...I now use the gene bobbin and also make sure my bottom thread is pulled to the top of the quilt...doing these two things have made the bobbin nests go away....I remember how wonderful my quilt looked untill I turned it over...good thing its pretty easy to rip them out but ohhh the thread waste.

stitchengramie 10-16-2011 03:47 AM

I know what you mean. I am just going through that right now. I spent 5 hours cutting threads from tangled up fabric.

QuiltingHaven 10-16-2011 04:01 AM

Or your needle wasn't in correctly....don't ask me how I know that one.

bobquilt3 10-16-2011 04:03 AM

Shame you couldn't have that on top for an embellishment. Hmmm, could be interesting.

ka9sdn 10-16-2011 04:09 AM

We all share your Grrr. Hope the cuppa helped.

quilt crazee 10-16-2011 04:10 AM

Mona Marie 10-16-2011 05:17 AM

too bad it wasn't on the top. You could then say "string art" LOL Sorry, I hate when that happens

cpfrog 10-16-2011 05:21 AM

Sorry, but I had to laugh... how many times have I seen the exact same thing.... but I walked for months, not just a moment.... get out the scissors, seam ripper and tackle it! Good luck.

Lone Feather 10-16-2011 05:27 AM

hahahha, gotta love that "Bobbin Vomit...been there done that, hope I don't do it again.....
Kaye from Montana....

KS quilter 10-16-2011 06:09 AM

I've had that happen. I agree, something with the top
tension. Couple years ago had trouble with my machine and
took it to my dealer about 35 mile N. of me. After checking gobs of stuff he took the whole cover off of the
machine and over on the right side (under the 'wheel') there
was a birdnest of thread that would fill the palm of your
hand..I mean so big it was larger than a coffee cup. Neither of us ever figured out where that thread came from
or how it got in there. Puzzleing to this day.

Lone Feather 10-16-2011 06:12 AM

whoooo uuu eeeeee
twilight zone...... :?:

DebJ 10-16-2011 06:19 AM

I too have had that happen. I have been doing FMQ lately, a lot and I will be sewing along, hear this certain noise which I have learned mean my thread has wrapped around a guide. I learn quickly to stop and slip it off or it will break. If I slip it off I can just keep sewing. Why or how it does it I don't know.

catladyquilts 10-16-2011 06:31 AM

it makes us appreciate the machine when it doesn't happen. we have all had that experience, not fun but fixable.

ShirlinAZ 10-16-2011 06:47 AM

Oh! I SO sympathize. I wish I could never forget to properly lower the foot to engage the tension disks.
