Does that "varegated" have metallic in it?
I would worry about the future lifetime of the quilt, (because the metallic might not be as strong and long lasting as 100% cotton) vs the beauty! sorry, not much help... |
I have used Gutermann thread for years . I always use same thread in bobbin that is on the machine except for embroidery.

Ask your machine...it will tell you!
Amazing quilt! |
depend's on what machine your useing, I have 5 machine's and each one takes different thread,
|
Beautiful quilt! Do you mean that you sewed EACH of those 1,500 2 1/2 inch squares??!!!??? You're a better person than I am. I'm ALWAYS looking for the short cuts!
|
I'm a Gutermann girl myself. Though I've never used the yellow colored spools on my machine - only the white colored spools. (Perhaps a different thread weight?)
|
You will love the Gutterman...it is much higher quality and you will have less lint and breakage...only buy it when half off at JoAnnes.
|
Beautiful quilt. I think the thread would work nice
|
quilt is beautiful!!

Why I was asking, is because thread is made of twisted thiner threads, and in metallic looking thread, one of the thinner threads is really a thin strip of metallic looking foil. and the foil is not very strong. Those threads are wonderfull for decorative stitching, and thread painting. They have found bits of six thousand year old fabric made of and stitched with cotton in archaeological digs, so you see that 100% cotton thread does last! LOL |

I am gonna use it in the top shown as I think it will blend well. Soo, I have a few questions..
1) Can I use my normal quilting thread for the bobbins? 2) What is everyones experience with this brand? Any problems I should be aware of? |
I've used Gutermann exclusively for everything....even have the color you photographed! I've pieced with it - FMQ'd with it using DSM- and satin stitched appliques...and used it with both top thead & bottom tread. Never problem one.
Now others have said Gutermann doesn't work with their machine....I have 2 Brothers - and a vintage Singer machine and never a problem..... |
Thanks 19angel52, I also have Brother dsm's and was wondering if they have a history of problems with this thread like other brands have. Now if I could just figure out a border/no border I could actually get to using this new thread. Oh bother! LoL
|
I like that thread I use it a lot.
|
Have always bought gutterman. Just switched to connecting threads. Will be sending all my other threads to Haiti with a missionary friend. Love the CT threads. Now for my answer. Use what's on top for bobbin,BUT test on a sandwich first. Your machine may sqeal. Ask me how I know?
If it does squawk, do not use top and bottom. Maybe a finer thread in bobbin is necessary. Did that help? Pegeth |
Since we are talking thread what is the best thread to use for embroidery patterns? The ones I am using at the moment keeps breaking since they are all I have. I do have rayon but they are expensive here and I can't afford to use them for practicing the patterns to see how they come out before using them on my good fabric.

I use Sulky rayon and have never had thread breakage. Don't know what you use - but you might want to give Sulky a try - and Joanns has it on sale on a somewhat regular basis at 40% off....or use their monthly flyer 40% coupon. Hopefully you have a Joanns close by! |
Thank you 19angel52. I use different brand of rayon cotton also Threadart and Rasant cottons now but they are a little more expensive than I used to buy.

Gutterman cotton 50wt is my thread of choice, for bobbin and top stitching. Your quilt top looks great, good luck.

I've just discovered my Singer 401 perfers Guterman thread. This came as a huge surprise to me, since Coats and Clark was the only thead my brand mother had available in rual Arkansas during the 50s. Hancocks had C&C on sales, so i bought server spools. As soon as I started using it the thread would break every 5 or 6 in. When I went back to the gutterman, the thread stopped breaking. This leads me to believe that C&C has changed the quality of thread since the good old days. I will save the C&C for hand sewing.

Ok, so I finally managed to get this quilt done. Yay! But I always forget to take a good full pic of it so this will have to do. Don't mind DD, Ms. Jenna, there, she doesn't like surprise pics. LOL! It now rests on the back of my couch for snuggling under, unless DGS runs off with it (which he seems to do often!) and it quilted up beautifully, using this thread. I enjoyed using this thread so much, it was like a running a hot knife thru butter, that's how smooth the process went. I would def. suggest it to anyone to use. I quilted this one by following the lines of colored squares across their diagonal so the lines go this way for a spell and then that way for a spell. It really did turn out rather good, and has been named "Perfectly Imperfect" as it just seemed to fit the process it underwent. Thanks for all the good info and advice yuns gave me, ya'll are swell!!
|
Perfectly beautiful....I like Gutermann thread and their handquilting thread is also very good.
|
I'm a Gutterman Girl, never had any problems, get it on sale at JoAnns, most important of all, my Janome likes it.
|
Add me to the rest of the "I like Gutterman thread" and "your quilt is beautiful" crew!! ;) I have had no problems with Gutterman in my machine (a Viking), but then again, it appears the only thread my machine dislikes is Coats and Clark.
|
Your quilt is lovely! I use and like Guermann (and many other brands too). I have to agree with MAD QUILTER - that specific machine that you use may not like it.
|
I really like the thread, have used it many times. Try using it on a sample to see how your machine sews with it before trying it on your quilt. Your quilt top is beautiful.
|
Your quilt is gorgeous, so much work. I use Gutterman or 100% cotton Sulky for the top, CC in the bobbin.
|
lovely quilt. also love gutermann thread, i get the 5000 meter spools, prefer it for piecing.
absolutely love variegated thread too, but save it for quilting. katz |
answers to your questions

I am a newbie but have had problems in the past with Coats & Clark and switched to Gutterman. I am very happy. My daughter-in-law uses it and started with the variegated and loves it. It is right about some machines being fusier. We both have Jaonomes
