Ok, going way outside my box here and trying a new thread. Usually I just buy the C&C machine quilting spools at Wal-Mart but went over to Hancocks today to buy a bunch of $.99 FQs and seen this 100% cotton variagated thread on sale 1/2 off. I am gonna use it in the top shown as I think it will blend well. Soo, I have a few questions..
1) Can I use my normal quilting thread for the bobbins? 2) What is everyones experience with this brand? Any problems I should be aware of? The thread in question The top it's intended for |
No answer on the thread. But that is one incredible looking quilt!!
|
lol...im trying the same brand...picked it up today...i will be interested in the answers that you get...
your quilt is gorgeous! cant wait to see it completed |
Beautiful quilt. I usually use Gutermann thread. Occasionally I use Mettler and I recently bought Connecting Threads cotton thread, but I prefer Gutermann. I have had no problems with it and I like to get it at JoAnn's for 50% off.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I have worked on this one for almost 9 months now. I did not use any strip piecing or other "quick" methods as I was wanting to hone my skills and being a taurus, I had to do it the hardest way possible. :-) It is my own design and has 1500 2 1/2" squares. Only the top half is completely together at this point.
|
I have used Guterman and have been happy with it. The question is: Does your machine like it? Some are persnickety. As for the bobbin, I usually use the same weight thread in the bobbin when I quilt. Not necessarily the same brand or even the same type.
The variegated will be perfect for that lovely quilt. |
Beautiful quilt. I usually use Gutermann thread.

I love Gutterman, also use 100% cotton Sulky. |
Very pretty quilt. I have not tried guttermen and found that walmart brand breaks to easy, I went to my local quilt shop and bought some Star tread to try in my new machine and it seems to work very well. The only brand I use with my quilting machine now is King Tut, it hardly breaks and way less fuzz around the bobbin case. But that is just my two cents.

I love Gutermann thread. Your quilt is beautiful!!
I am really against buying the cheaper threads. Just not worth it in the long run ( My opinion only) |
used the variagated thread for practice sandwiches with no problem
|
I've used only Gutermann until recently when I bought some from Connecting Threads, so far no problems. Your quilt is beautiful. And although I'm a capricorn, my philosophy is why do it the easy way when you can do it the hard way....LOL. I don't really do it that way except by mistake, but believe me when I say I've made plenty of mistakes.

Beautiful Quilt!

I like Gutterman and your quilt is wonderful
|
Gutterman is a good thread to work with have used their cotton thread a lot, however today I had to buy their silk thread for applique as that was all I could get at JoAnns.
Prefer Sulky silk but will give this a try. |
i buy this thread from my lqs and i love the way it works in my machine. the stiches are perfect and the thread doesnt break while sewing like walmart thread.
i love your quilt the colors are perfect. |
Fantastic quilt! You did a wonderful job.
I have one Janome that doesn't like Gutterman thread. But I have 2 others that I have no problems with it. I don't understand why the machine acts up, but I get nesting and irregular stitches, but if I put in another type of thread like C&C or Metzler, I have no problems. I guess sewing machines are like people, they have their own preferences. |
I like the Guterman thread too. What a pretty quilt!
|
Its one of my favorites!
|
I love gutermann thread! My old machine would act up with other kinds. I since have gotten a new machine but have stuck with gutermann. It goes on sale pretty regularly at Joanns. I never have a problem with it breaking or anything.
|
Beautiful quilt!
For those that get their guterman thread at JoAnn's does your store carry the guterman polyester thread or cotton thread? Mine just carries the polyester thread and I was wondering. (Might have to add this to my list for today) |
Is this thread good for hand stitching and quilting? Thanks

About best you can buy on the market. I use this brand with my embroidery machine. Gutermann is a great thread to use. |
your quilt is gorgeous!
|
I like the thread from Connecting Threads, lot less lint and fuzz than Coats and Clark.
To answer your question about what to use in your bobbin with the varigated Gutterman thread, use the varigated thread on the top and another color and/or brand of thread in the bobbin but first try it out on some fabric scraps. Sew several long rows of stitching, check the top and bottom stitches and if they are OK go for it. You never know how different threads react to each other. May in Jersey |
Thanks again ya'll! I will do what was suggested by May and test run it first with my usual bobbin thread. I do appreciate all the thoughts about it, that really helps ease the nerves. For some reason I find it thrilling to go outside the box yet it is also a bit nerve-racking at the same time.

I reckon the best answer is this: I have a helluva time lining squares up, always have, and wanted to break the whole process down to see where my "issue" was. I ended up discovering that I not only had an issue, I had a whole subscription of "issues"! Once I figured out what they were and how to fix them, well... the quilt just kinda grew as I learned. I would highly recommend(sp?) this type of process to anyone struggling with an area themselves. Maybe not such a large scale thing but more of a "Going back to basics to get it right" type thing. LoL! |
I just switched to the Gutermann myself. Seems to be going OK.
Where did you find your quilt pattern? It's just what I'm looking for for my grandson for Christmas! |
I use gutterman and like it ...your quilt is beautiful.
|
INCREDIBLE quilt! I use Gutermann thread all the time for everything. I don't use any other kind.
|
I use that thread all the time ,,,,,most popular in the uk
|
I just used that thread on a project. If I told you that it is $14.50 a spool in our LQS, would it make you feel that you were using a good product?.....(I can't believe .50c for the same product when our dollar has parity with yours).
|
gutterman thread is excellent...it is my preferred thread on my viking machine. Just make sure you use machine quilting thread if you are quilting with it and not hand sewing thread. You can use it in the bobbin also.

The only thing I know about the thread is it is the only kind that sews well in my mom's Pfaff. But your quilt is beatiful!
|
Gutterman also is available for hand quilting, which has a waxed coating to keep it from tangling. You should not use this type in a sewing machine as it will gum up the mechanics. Make sure you purchase the type specifically for machine quilting.
|
I have that exact same spool in my stash of thread. I'm currently using it on a quilt of the month at my LQS. It looks really neat as decoration around yellow flowers! I use this brand a lot, and have had no problems at all with it. Enjoy!
|
I like Guterman. My sister is a Taurus also. I don't know if she does things "the hard way," but she does beautiful work, just like you!!
|
Beautiful quilt! Sorry I can't help you on the thread question.
