I have a Bernina machine and have a problem when I use Gutterman and Mettler in both the needle and bobbin, can only use it in one or the other.
|
My LQS said I should use only Guttermans thread, I don't. I've bought one spool it sews about the same as my Connecting Threads spools. I have a Janome as well.
|
I have a Bernina 1080 and a singer. Both machine's love Gutterman thread. I buy it on sale at Joanne amd use it almost exclusively because of the price. One day I will move to sulky and maderia.

Terry I notice that you have a designer 1 did you get 2 throat plates with your machine I only got the zigzag plate I am looking for the straight stitch plate. Thanks Shrabar
|
A lot of great tips here regarding spool wrap. For finicky thread, I try to make sure the bobbin and top are compatible (same weight or lighter weight bobbin) use a thread stand, or else my home-made thread feeder using a clean empty jar on the floor and a taped paper clip on the machine for an eye, then thread machine normally. I think this lets the thread untwist more, less breaks when sewing.
|
Although I have become a Superior thread user, I have used Guterman thread on my Janomes for many years and have never encountered a problem. Usually when someone in a store tells me not to use a thread (if it is one they don't carry), I question their veracity. After all, they want to sell you THEIR brand of thread. I highly recommend Superior threads! Guterman is my #2 favorite
|
I used to use Gutterman a lot, but lately it seems to have a lot of lint in my Bernina. I use M,ettler Aurifil, Superior, Sulky with no problems & hardly any lint

When I got my first serger and where I got from told my to use only pure cotton thread still use thecotton poly I asked the husquvarna repair man and he said it does not matter what you use just clean the machine often, the women at the shop when you walked in they would snicker in back of their hands and point to the thread and make you feel like you were durt under their feet , I took it to another store after that

I asked if it likes or dislikes certain threads and the LQS owner said not to use Guttermann thread. She said it's put on the spool wet at the factory which makes it come off the spool with a tighter curve and doesn't feed through the machine as well. Have any of you noticed this? It apparently is noticeable as soon as you start the spool and any reputable store should recognize the problem and replace the bad thread. |
I have 2 Janomes and only use Aurifil on them. Does not break or tangle. I have the 6600 proff and the little Janome Silver. Love them both1
|
I have never liked Gutermann thread. I just don't like the feel of it and what Nadine said about it being wound on the spool wet may be a possible explanation. I use Metzler (sp?) and have always had very good results.

I occasionally use a Bernette 90e for some parts of my projects and it works really well--but has only a horizontal spool pin. Why is this, I wonder--how much more expenive could it be to construct these machines with a spoon pin that hinges vertically as well as horizontally? I doubt there is any answer to this. But does anybody have a recommendation for a thread stand?
I might add that oddly enough, my Juki 98Q hates Superior Thread of all weights. I had to give up on it and go back to C&C. Dana |

i use all the time Guttermann, i have never had a problem with it..
i use it on my Janome 6600 and the Gem Platinum. |
Very true, and something i learned about a year ago..
http://www.superiorthreads.com/educa...them-different cones and spools, the difference in the way they unwind, there is a whole section on thread education. very good info! there are a few short videos that are interesting to watch and learn! Reguarding threads and thier costs.. if you calculated the cost per yard. the larger or costly spools or cones would actually not be as bad as you think.it is the initial cost that makes us not want to pay the amount . i quit using C & C,because the price went up, and the spool or yardage got smaller..(the new dual duty) . they say it was too linty, but i clean my bobbin area after every small project, usually when i change the bobbin thread, i wipe it out, prior to putting in the new bobbin. I think the fabric is way more linty than the threads. IMHO |
I have two Janomes and use Gutterman's on both of them. I've never had even the slightest problem. I'm talking years of use, not just a few weeks. How the heck do people come up with these stories? If I were you, I'd just ignore it. Give your DGD a few spools of different good quality threads and let her decide which she likes best. 8-)

I have always used Gutermann in my older Pfaff, the cheap thread never worked well in it.
|
I am currently using Gutermann for making yo-yo's for a quilt and even with beeswax find it very frustrating when it breaks when knotting off. Which seems to be about every 4 yo-yo's or less.
|
I have noticed when I use Guttermann thread, the thread kind of jumps off the spool like it is getting caught on something. I think it might have something to do the spools being smaller than the reg. spools of thread. Could this be?
|
Thanks for the infor on guterman Thread. Think I bought a plastic box full of several colors at Joanns, but have onyl used it for hand sewing.
|
I have a Viking Designer 1, I was told to use Guttermann thread , NEVER to use Coats & Clarks! Have not had any problems with the Guttermann..I see others agree with me too.
|
I use Gutterman polyester for everything! Both of my Bernina's like it as well as my Juki and my little Brother. I very rarely have my thread break. In fact I love it so much, my DH bought me a 100 spool assortment at Joanns for Christmas last year.
|
I bought hand quilting thread - it was unevenly processed - some lengths very thick, some very, very thin. Will never buy it again.

WOW! Good for you! nice present! |
Oh I am so glad you mentioned this as I have the same machine and every once in awhile the thread gets caught up. I thought it was my machine or I might be doing something wrong. Thanks for the info. I'll change threads.
Also I want to add that when I used Guttermann metalic looking thread it started shredding the getting caught up in the feed dogs. Too bad as the thread looked so pretty. Does anyone know if all metalic's have this problem? Ann in San Ramon |
In my opinion, I have found that sometimes sales people will say anything to get you to buy 'their stuff' Guttermann is a great middle to top thread range in price and quality, I have used it for over 30 years of sewing and in all that time I have had no problems what so ever, I even use their 100% cotton quilting thread to hand quilt my bed quilts with, I have never needed to change to anything else. Just my opinion.

Call me a skeptic, but I use Gutermann all the time with no problem.
Personally, I think your LQS owner is trying to sell you some more expensive thread. The last time I bought 40 wt Sulky, and had to take it off my machine because it kept breaking. It looked beautiful, but was too soft for my freemotion quilting. Just use what works for you, and let the quilt police go bark up a tree. :P |

I use Gutterman most of the time. The only problem I have
with it is that when I finish sewing a seam and cut the thread it curls around my machines foot. I also like Mettler. My machine is a Janome 6600. I bought some Aurafil but haven't used it yet. I clean my machine after every project too. |

I love guttermann thread, its the coats/clarke thread I don't like, I prefer gutterman over anything else never had a problem with it, I usually get it when it is on sale and stock up. I have a Janomme and have no problem using it.
|
I was told by the Bernina dealer some time ago to not use Gutterman as it was trash and would not work well with Bernina.
|
I use Gutterman, Sulky, Isofil, Mettler, Coates, Dewhurst, (some of it old, inherited stuff), Signature, Superior threads, Wonderfil, etc etc. They all serve a purpose for different jobs. The only ones to avoid are the hand quilting threads which have a coating on them that interferes with tension discs and the el - cheapo threads that break all of the time.
|
I have a Janome machine and I only use gutermann cotton thread and have never had a problem with it at all.

Bottom line, use what your machine likes. |
Some of the Gutterman thread is made in Germany and some of it (Hancock Fabrics) is made in Mexico. Check your spools to see where it is manufactured. The Gutterman made in Mexico is horrible, i.e., frays i the needle breaks, is full of lint) but the Gutterman made in Germany is of high quality and is great. Hancock Fabrics here in Oklahoma City carries the Gutterman made in Mexico and Jo-Ann Fabrics carries the Gutterman made in Germany.
