You are very lucky. Hankies can be made into beautiful quilts. I wish we could have had my Mom's and Grandmother's but that was not to be...

pgthom 12-06-2010 06:15 PM

What fun! I love old hankies. There are some very clever ways of using hankies in quilts. If you do a search, you can see some of them. Some are butterflies, others baskets, not sure what else. Also the old flowered tablecloths are very much in demand by collectors, especially if they are in good shape. If very stained or holey, they make good throw pillows for shabby chic decor or outdoor furniture. Lots of ways to use them. Do some research, but you'll realize you have a treasure trove!

stewyscrewy 12-06-2010 06:16 PM

Ohhh I would love to get a couple of the table cloths to do longarming on. my dream on day it will come true. you are so blessed. those hankies will make great quilt peices too.

16 years ago.... I made a beautiful baby quilt using ladies handkerchiefs for a friend's little girl. I appliqued them onto white fabric and put light batting under each, then hand quilted around the floral patterns. One even had a ballerina on it and found a monogrammed one with the family initial. Used pink between each block and for the backing. Wish I had a digital pic of it. Oh, well...

sweet 12-06-2010 06:36 PM

Do a search! There was a gorgeous hankie quilt on here a couple of weeks ago. If I find it, I'll repost with the link.

auntmarie 12-07-2010 03:00 AM

Elenor Burns from Quilt in a Day. com has a whole show on this. Lovely. So did Sewing with Nancy .com shows.

#1piecemaker 12-07-2010 04:59 AM

Ohhhhh how wonderful. You can made some pretty quilts using those old hankies and decorative cloths. I'd take the hankies and applique them onto a solid background square and then put them altogether.Maybe even add a little sashing around each one. Gorgeous! My sister collects those kinds of things. It's her weakness, she says. You've got a treasure.

Jo Mama 12-07-2010 05:17 AM

Oh My!! I am drooling. Cindy Brick has a book out called "Hanky Panky" with lots of small quilt patterns and easy instructions. (www.cindybrick.com) Check her web site out. Have fun.

Oh my... I have been everywhere looking for old hankies.... I have paid up to 5.00 each for some. Going to make a hankie quilt. You will have a great time finding stuff to make with them. I took one and folded it like an envelope stuffed batting in it and added scent, sewed together and put in closet for nice scent. It was so cute.
Have fun!

Central Ohio Quilter 12-07-2010 06:52 AM

I have a bunch of beautiful old hankies also.

One thing I did with mine is I made kitchen curtains out of beautiful all white, embroidered hankies. The curtains are light and breazy and pretty.

I made the lower half of the window curtains by just whip stitching them together by hand and hung them with clip curtain rings. Then I made valences for the top of the windows with hankies that had just an embroidered or lacy section in the corner and folded these in half diagonally so the fancy section shows. I overlapped these over the top curtain rod.

They look so cool and very different.

Joeysnana 12-07-2010 06:55 AM

I adore vintage tablecloths. You are a lucky duck!

Robinlee 12-07-2010 06:57 AM

Hanky Panky is the book for you............My quilt guild just had our christmas party last thursday, and my secret pal got me a couple dozen hankies, and a few other surprise gifters' gave me a couple as a "going away present". So I too have several. But you have a "STASH".

sew4fun 12-07-2010 06:57 AM

There are lots of patterns out there using old hankies. I have a box of old ones that I really want to make up in a quilt one day. One of those things on that mental list of things I want to do. Enjoy!

lavona 12-07-2010 06:59 AM

What a joy to recieve! I have collected "old hankies" for years and saved them up for a project. Noticed there is a booklet out now on making quilts from hankies. Just not sure if I want to put them all together? They are so nice just to look at by themselves.

So much fun ahead! I've been collecting embroidered hankies on Ebay, use them to make toddler jackets. There was an article in Creative Needle magazine years ago that got me started...Heres a few photos;
