I purchased a rolling kitchen island at an unfinished furniture store. It has a shelf about 8 inches from the bottom and a drawer right under the top. I made a removable ironing surface by covering a 1/4 sheet of plywood with batting and a silver heat proof cover that I just stapled underneath the plywood to hold it taunt. This provides me with at least 45 inch long ironing surface and at least a good arms length deep width. All I have to do to cut on it is throw on a cutting matt. There is room underneath for between 4 and six bins for fabric storage. I don't know how I quilted without it. It is the perfect height for cutting and ironing. I am 5' 4' tall. I am sure I spent less that $100.

Nouveaus idea is great way to go or you could get a desk (eventhough it has chair space and put sliding storage under it. File drawers are great for storage.

I bought an old dresser at a yard sale and keep that under my cutting table...... also another under my ironing board!!!

Isn't it fabulous the creativity we can see when we want something bad enough? :-)

I went to Habitat for humanity resale store and bought a small kitchen base cabinet. My hubby fitted a solid core door on it, and put formica on top. I then used one of those plastic 3 drawer bins on one end, and store my sewing machine case and what not under the other end.

My friend got some book shelves from Home Depot, added a matching shelf for the top and she loves it...they are made out of malamine, I think that is what it is called.

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone! I've written out a tentative plan and will have dh go over it to make sure it's doable. Another layer in my planning is that my sewing room won't be close-able, if that makes sense. So I want everything to look nice and company-ready, if you will, and not have a mess sitting out visible. I'm planning to make fabric curtains to cover my plastic drawers, for one thing. I like the look of wood better but haven't been able to find wood drawers in the correct sizes that will fit things better than these plastic ones. So curtains will be my solution. We'll see how the rest of it goes. I know some things will be visible but I'm hoping I can make it look nice enough.

I haven't made one yet but I plan to design something for my new sewing room when it is done.
