DH went and got some plywood to put over the top of my ironing board to make it larger. After it was finished i had to try it out~LOVE IT btw. Anywho, since I just finished ironing some fabric I didn't want to fold it back up. I was trying to think of something I could use to hang my fabric on, so I ventured into the garage. There in the recycling bin were 2 wrapping paper cardboard rolls, I used paper clips to attach to the under side of the ironing board and PRESTO, I have a fabric hanger!! Best of all it was FREE!!!!

Great idea.

My DH made me a 24" sq. out of plywood for my ironing board some years ago, which I put a pad on for pressing my applique' blocks and etc. However I had him put two little strips on the lower edge of mine to keep it in place and not slip back and forth. My ironing board is an antique wooden ironing board that my mom purchased from Goolwill about 1940. I am thinking about having him make me a full length, wider top to fit over the top of my board like you now have and would really be nice since mine is really narrow....do think about the "stabilizers" on either side of the bottom of your new top to keep it from shifting. We just set the new top on the board and toook a pencil and marked the bottom of the new top so DH would know exactly where to place the two stabilizer strips. ENJOY and I'll send you my ironing as well...LOL,LOL
Very good idea on the tube underneather as well...I will definately put that to use as well! Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for the stabilizer idea, the board does shift a bit but figured i'd get used to it. I have DH work on that tomorrow:D

MrsBoats 01-04-2012 03:19 PM

That's a great idea! I usually hang stuff over the back of the chair and have been wondering what else I could do.

BellaBoo 01-04-2012 03:32 PM

Great idea. I also love the black tape around your iron, we quilters are so resourceful.

raptureready 01-04-2012 04:21 PM

For a junior member you're really getting the hang of this. Pun intended LOL. That's a great idea that I just may have to snag for my own use. Hope you don't mind.

ksdot417 01-04-2012 04:51 PM

Great idea. I think I even have an extra long mailing tube downstairs. Now to find it and set it up. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the idea, the simple things really are the best.

Nanamoms 01-05-2012 06:49 AM

I saved my empty wrapping paper rolls because they just "looked" like they would be good for something in my sewing room. You just saved my brain cells!! Hope it's ok to borrow your idea!

pinkberrykay 01-05-2012 06:52 AM

I love the bag you can see on the floor behind the ironing board.

MYWR 01-05-2012 07:17 AM

I put my finished piecing over the top of the door - they never wrinkle and are out of the way of my playful pups!!

Mazda 01-05-2012 07:23 AM

Ingenious! You should have been an engineer!

jcrow 01-05-2012 07:40 AM

I just put my Christmas wrapping paper out in the storage shed. Now, I am going to go dig it out and make two of those, one on each side of my ironing board. What a smart idea!!

quilt addict 01-05-2012 10:40 AM

I purchased a big board and it has the two pieces on the bottom side to keep it from sliding on the ironing board and it does help. I love the hanger idea and will be working on making one for my ironing board too. Thanks for sharing.

imdelagarza62 01-06-2012 04:09 AM

That's a great idea. When and if they become too tattered and worn you could get a piece of pvc pipe for longevity.

pasolovers 01-06-2012 04:17 AM

Very inventive...

What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I have a larger board for ironing and I love it. I brought it back from Texas last year!

damaquilts 01-06-2012 05:39 AM

Great idea. I made my board too . My brother had made me one while I was still down in GA but it was made out of 3/4 exterior plywood. HEAVY!!! And after I moved my ironing board kept tipping over since it was now on carpet instead of concrete. So I found a new shorter, wider one ironing board in goodwill and went to Home Depot got one of their precut 2x4 pieces attached pieces at the sides and end and covered. Its a little short on the one end but much lighter and it doesn't tip now.

michelehuston 01-06-2012 05:40 AM
