I do all the time, just put a plastic placemat on top for dinner.

No I would not , I would have to cover with plastic and ... the plastic cover would remind me of the old couch covers , that no one ever took off.

Yes, I have covered my table with a quilt...do it often mostly for "looks"...if just family, we pull the quilt off when it is time to eat, and I put it back on after meal is over/clean up done. If I ever want to use it with company, then I do have plastic to put over it to protect the quilt.
And I have lots of tablerunners and tabletoppers too!

Do you use batting in the tablecloth quilts?
Sounds like a very good idea to really display some handiwork.

I plan on making a Christmas table cloth using a bow pattern. I think lots of pretty bow blocks should look good.

I made several for picnics for each daughter and they love them - use designer fabric samples. I also make full size oval table cloths for the table as they are hard to find around here - I use a backing that can be used as another one by flipping it over - easy to wash and use and lots of fun when the grand kids come.

Yes, I do it especially when we get together to donate our pillowcases for the APQ challenge.
Every time I do it I remember the cartoon I saw several years ago. The husband and wife are sitting at the table and she says to him "I don't think we can afford this restaraunt. They have antique quilts for tablecloths."

Yes, one of my first ones, and several others. One was made to cover my table at a craft fair; flannel backing with no batting for items to lay flatter.

No I haven't, but I make seasonal table runners, dinner napkins and placemats for my Mom. She seems to enjoy setting a formal table during the holidays, and I'm always willing to oblige her with the bit of joy that it brings her.
