I also showed my husband, who's now very afraid that will be me...We own 2 homes and I have sewing rms in each and lots of fabric...but I think I'd need another 20 yrs to have 1/2 of that.

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 01-13-2011 04:44 PM

Can you imagine sorting and labeling all of that??!! Geeez, gives me a headache just thinging about it. LOL. Lots of wonderful vintage fabrics I see in the pics.

I hope that buying fabrics is what gave her joy in life. I can think of many other ways to spend my money. I have a lot of stuff around, especially in storage now, but not more than I will actually use some day. Is nice to have extra to pick from, but her stash is not healthy. I bet they didn't get back as much as she spent.

kriscraft99 01-13-2011 05:18 PM

it gives me a headache too thinking about it but gosh it would be fun touching it

I think that he/she who dies with the most fabric... is still dead.

It's nice to have a bit of a stash. Adds color and purpose to a life.

But that much... is kind of sad. She didn't come close to using it up. I truly hope she got a great deal of pleasure from acquiring it.

I dunno... maybe it's just me, but the older I get the less desire I have to collect anything at all. I still like looking at pretty things, I just no longer feel the need to own it. Just looking is enough.

I wonder if I'm the only one?

sewingsuz 01-13-2011 05:26 PM

Where is this? I can not even type, WOW WOW

No, I'm getting to be like that. I don't need much anymore and my wants a decreasing.... I hope that is normal?

haha, I'm with you, I would have loved to have touched it and drooled, just wouldn't have wanted to sort it for sale. Now that's a lot of fabric!!

wolph33 01-13-2011 05:40 PM

WOW is right

Your not the only one. I am 27 and I feel this way. In the end the money was wasted. Time was wasted having to sort and box it all up. I hope prior to spending so much money on fabric I hope she took care of after life care. I could only imagine the family...."If only we could pay her funeral bills with all this fabric she has".

This is really sad, and honestly makes me sick.

OneMoreQuilt 01-13-2011 06:04 PM

Are you trying to tell me we can't take our stashes with us??
I would love to have met this woman. I'll bet she was incredible.

I bet she was too. She must have been in her early 80's, had 4 daughters and quilted for friends, family, and others.

QultingaddictUK 01-13-2011 06:13 PM

I lose

KwiltyKahy 01-13-2011 06:15 PM

Wow. I thought I was in the running to win, now I know better.

dkabasketlady 01-13-2011 06:20 PM

WOW!!!! What a shame to have so much fabric and never be able to use it all. It makes me look at my meager stash and want to stop buying fabric NOW because I know I'll never use all I have now. If anyone needed to be on HOARDERS it was this woman. I know she probably enjoyed making quilts and was probably a VERY talented quilter, but enough is enough!!!!

Iluv2quilt 01-13-2011 06:23 PM

Amazing! Hard to believe someone could have all of that!

Maybe/maybe not I received alot of fabric when someone passed and she didn't sew or quilt just collected fabric and cut squares,I got a flat FULL of 4.5inch squares and ziplock bags of lots of other sizes, and the squares were cut with scissors.

Pickles 01-13-2011 06:39 PM

O that poor women, boy did she need help in the worst way,
that was hoarding in the extreme

Anne P 01-13-2011 06:40 PM

Holy cow!!!! It looks like enough fabric to open two or three quilt shops! I hope it all finds really good homes.

AnnieF 01-13-2011 07:05 PM

Holy crap.....that's a lot of fabric. I can see from the quilts in the back that she made a lot of quilts.....but really what was she thinking??!!

jdiane318 01-13-2011 07:12 PM

Was this the auction that was either in West Plains or Ava, MO? I had some friends go look and they left because of sssssooooooooooooooooooooo many people.

Blue Bell 01-13-2011 07:15 PM

Wow, now that is a lot of fabric. Guess I don't have that much after all.

tuesy 01-13-2011 07:31 PM

A couple of years ago there was this lady in town who commited suicide and had just about the same thing. Fabric by the bolts, kits, rotary cutters, scissors, rulers, paints, yarns, every craft that you can think of, etc and not just one of something, she had at least a dozen or more of things. Sewing machines went for nothing. She had those expensive baskets and not just 1, but over 200!
If you've seen the show hoarders, this is what her house/garage and yard looked like. It was so very sad.

julie777 01-13-2011 07:37 PM

oh my god i would be in seventh heaven with all that fabric

Ann63 01-13-2011 08:54 PM

Let's not be so quick to judge this lady. We don't know how and why she acquired so much fabric in what seems to have been a long life. The fact is she was a quilter and apparently loved doing it. I can think of a lot of other things she could have spent her money and time doing worst than fabric. At least her children can recoup money from something she enjoyed. How many people spend money on things that have absolutely no value to anyone but them. Hopefully some beautiful quilts and clothing will be made from these fabrics. I like to think she was smiling seeing all those people wanting what she had.

Lori Peercy 01-13-2011 09:07 PM

Wow I don't have even enough of a stash for a flat of fabric!

danece 01-13-2011 10:14 PM

You know, I think she won

Nope...I'm with ya ;)

A little is enough for me.

WOW WOW and more WOW! I don't see how you would ever know what all you had. I like to have plenty on hand, but good golly. I would never have the room to store that much fabric. I'm really surprised that she didn't designate it to go to quilt guilds or charities. If I had that much, I think I would have something stipulated in my will.

Flying_V_Goddess 01-13-2011 11:56 PM

Oh my! She could have opened up a fabric shp in her lifetime with that amount of fabric!

Yes - it was in Ava. There were alot of chairs - but filled up in no time. Lets just say that day was an adventure....

uniquelynancy 01-14-2011 04:18 AM

Oh My God! I thought I had a lot of fabric. She definitely won the prize for the most fabric!! I wish I had been there!

deBRAT 01-14-2011 04:28 AM

overwhelmed. As i'm in the midst of cleaning my garage and sewing room, this post is really confirming what I was already knowing, I have too much fabric. I will never sew all of this in my lifetime :( After it is finished being sorted by color (i had several large bins tossed together) I will have a much better idea of what I actually have and what I can certainly live without. thank you for posting these pictures, they were eye opening.

nanna-up-north 01-14-2011 04:32 AM

Wow.... My husband's cousin lives in Ava.... wonder if they were at the auction. You are in quilting country... I learned to quilt from some of those ladies...... far from there now. What a fun day.... yes, exhausting too... but fun... I love auctions.

Moon Holiday 01-14-2011 04:57 AM

I'd agree with you and say she won!
