I made this wall hanging for my Brother and sister-in-law for Christmas... a friend of hers saw it and would like me to make her one and said she would pay anything for it... I have no idea how much to charge. I know you don't get paid for your time that you put into projects, but I don't want to charge too much or too little. So I haven't given her an answer yet... please help.

at the very, very least $50.00. I made a larger baby sunbonnet sue quilt for a co-worker and then she wouldn't buy it. too much she said! didn't even cover the fabrics.

wvhill22 02-20-2011 07:30 AM

I was going to say 75.00 but certainly not less than 50.00. I think it depends on how much you have in the material. If you are using high quality material or not. You still want it to be worth your while.

donnajean 02-20-2011 07:34 AM

Figure the cost of materials & multiply that by 3. Make sure to get a deposit before starting the project.

or

I like to have the person I'm making the quilt for purchase the materials. That way, they get a better understanding of the costs involved.

Hew>>> I like this idea ALOT!!! Remembering this one.... People do that with me too..They want it for a few notes instead of the whole song!!

thimblebug6000 02-20-2011 07:54 AM

It's a beautiful wallhanging, I'm wondering how your sis-in-law will feel about her friend having one exactly like hers? Is there some way you could make them unique?

quilter1943 02-20-2011 07:56 AM

I agree with everyone on the pricing, but also agree on duplicating this for someone else. Maybe she would have a special little saying she would like on hers that is different.

pocoellie 02-20-2011 08:16 AM

Everything I've read says to charge 3 times the cost of the materials involved, including thread, etc., other than that I don't have a clue, but I would recommend getting a good deposit before doing anything.

nakuna 02-20-2011 09:49 AM

They don't want the cardinals... they want flowers or something...

kwilter 02-20-2011 10:15 AM

Please do agree ahead of time on a price and have her pay 1/2 of it as a deposit with the rest due at completion. It will help to have her not change her mind somewhere along the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ask me how I know.......(sigh)

CarrieAnne 02-20-2011 10:25 AM

how pretty!

Mazda 02-20-2011 10:26 AM

Well, it is beautiful!

ckcowl 02-20-2011 10:30 AM

how much did it cost you to make the first one? triple that amount.

DawnMarie 02-20-2011 10:37 AM

I do $10/hour plus materials. Some think that's kind of pricey, but others think it's right in line.

PWinston 02-20-2011 12:39 PM

I'm not sure on the pricing but, because it is personalized with their name, I would ask for full payment up front. It's not like anyone else could use it when you finish it. She obviously knows the quality of your work having seen your sister's so should be willing to pay in full before you start the project.

I totally agree with this. If it's personalized, there's nothing else you can do with it if she backs out. I had that happen. Once.

Vanuatu Jill 02-20-2011 01:11 PM

Good to know-my oldest girlfriend wants me to make her a quilt for the guest bedroom in her new house in Fla. I know she doesn't have a clue what really goes into them, let along the cost of just the fabric. She says she'll gladly pay me whatever it costs. We will be visiting she and her DH this summer and I said we would go shopping together for the fabric after she picks out a pattern she wants and I would price it, depending on the complexity of the pattern. I also will be hand-quilting it. I think if she pays for the materials up-front, she will get a feel for why they cost so much. I will get her to buy backing, batting, and thread at the same time.

Mazda 02-20-2011 04:17 PM

Think about it..........$10 per hour isn't really all that much as far as wages go.

Love the quilt. You may be able to get ideas by checking out quilts on etsy.com

Totally agree~!

craftyone27 02-20-2011 08:01 PM

I would say $50-75 and et at least 50% up front. This is a really nice personalized wallhanging. Did you design this or is it from a pattern? Really beautiful work!!

I have to say I agree with everyone here. Your time does count and if someone is asking for your work then make a little jingle for your hard labor. I also agree about a 1/2 down deposit. If you don't you also may be stuck with it.

AUQuilter 02-21-2011 02:37 AM

I second Dawn Marie. Figure out your hourly charge and then add cost of materials. It is a beautiful piece and she is getting it directly from you-no middle man mark up.

Even for friends n family I do that it saves so much embarrassment.

I work out the price by adding up cost of all the fabrics and double it. I don't make much if anything out of it but at least I am not out of pocket.

quilt3311 02-21-2011 04:13 AM

Get a deposit that is enough to cover the cost, then 3 X the cost plus a bit for your time. We are worth at least minimum wage are we not?

Mkotch 02-21-2011 04:22 AM

$10 an hour plus materials - including batting, thread, fabric, new rotary cutter blade, and machine needle.

janiesews 02-21-2011 06:23 AM

Very pretty! I will follow this line because i too have difficulty knowing what to charge when someone wants me to make them something.

lgilkey 02-21-2011 06:33 AM

how about making the birds either blue jays or cedar waxwings. Could change the block colors to match.

katlady 02-21-2011 07:02 AM

Charge 3 times what the material cost, that is the price you charge for the article.

Yep have them buy the fabrics. That way if they flake out on you at least you can sell to someone else

How big is the piece? Beautiful

decky 02-21-2011 08:31 AM

I tell people that I only make quilts or wallhangings for my family. I have no idea what a person should charge. You probably never get what it's worth.

I have people that I make quilts for do that. They are shocked with the cost of materiel. But then don't balk at the price when finish as they all ready bought the materiel.

Maybe give her a ball park figure "like between $50 and $100" and ask her to make you an offer. I would make up a material list and keep take of time spent and let her look at it so she can make you an educated and fair offer.

Lady Diana 02-21-2011 09:36 AM

45 x 45....say three yards of fabric time the going price of fabric $10 = $30, thread - $5 = $35, embroidery these days is not free, say $10, Batting - $7 ... Quilting is say .025 per sq. inch -$50, it is now up to$102 total. $42 for materials times 3 is on the nose! ($120) This comes out to $18 for putting the pieces together.....hmm.
This was a eye opener for me. Thanks for making us calculate!

Can't help with pricing but love the finished product.

Whatever you decide, get the money up front! My daughter did a painting for someone of a very specific subject and he lost interest and wouldn't reply to any of her calls. People want to BUY IT NOW and don't understand that these things take time.
I smocked and appliqued reversible toddler clothes & sold them 20 ago and barely paid for the fabric much less the time! It was very discouraging--I love to make quilts for other people but it is my inspiration, my creatiion so I have fun. I ask about a color palette or some design idea and go from there. My DIL is from Denmark and I am making everyone in her family a quilt. when I asked for colors-they said black and white. I asked what colors their rooms were painted and they are all white! It was a challenge but now I love black and white quilts and fabrics are easier to find . I'm about to start on one that is all black and white batiks-no color.

patski 02-21-2011 12:08 PM

I would have her go with you to purchase the fabric (so she knows what it costs) then figure out what is fair. I think I would pay $50 to $75 for it
