I am hoping you lovely ladies can help me decide on what type of quilt to make my three year old Grandaughter. My Grandaughter whose name is Sydney, was born and lives in Alaska with her mum and dad. I want to make her a quilt but don't know whether to do a 'girlie quilt', an aussie theme quilt, or something more Alaskan.

My daughter can't decide so maybe someone could help me.

personally, I would go girlie:)

carhop 10-06-2011 02:43 PM

I would go girly 3 yrs old like to play dress up and things like that

Murphy 10-06-2011 02:44 PM

I would make her an Aussie quilt since it is from you and perhaps she would love to know things of you (smile) - just my humble opinion.

With that name and a grandmum that lives in Australia make her one of your beautiful country, kangaroos, the ocean, mts,so many things to choose from. It is part of her heritage!

Granny Quilter 10-06-2011 02:49 PM

Since she is 3 I think "girly", The next one you make for her could be Australian, so she will have a glimpse of where you are.

amandasgramma 10-06-2011 02:51 PM

girly -- a 3 yr old won't understand the "down-under" or Alaskan theme.... :)

AlwaysQuilting 10-06-2011 03:00 PM

Girly.
I feel bad that you're so far away from her but thank goodness there's technology (cameras on pcs) so you can still see and talk to her.

I agree, to young to understand make a girly , after that start on one for her roots for when she gets older

Sheila_H 10-06-2011 03:11 PM

For a three year old I'd do a girlie quilt you could still put some koala bears on it so she's got something from Australia in her quilt, little girls would them - heck I'm an adult and love them!

Charleen DiSante 10-06-2011 03:12 PM

This is what I was thinking too.

Aussie...there's so many cute patterns ....

muddlingabout 10-06-2011 03:16 PM

At three years of age, I would think girlie colors and some "cute", koalas, kangaroos, a flower. The colors will appeal to her, and mom can tell "back home" stories about the critters.

At three years old, PINKS and GIRLY.

I totally agree with that. You can do a modified girly-Aussie or Aussie-girly but it would be sooooo special to get that from her gran.

hobbykat1955 10-06-2011 03:25 PM

Somthing that represents her Heritage...I vote Aussie...then it becames a keeper and not just another quilt.

How about a girlie Aussie quilt? I wonder if you can find things A-Z that are all Australian? That would be fun??? I am sure she will love it whatever you decide.

She's not going to be 3 forever...I'd go Aussie... :)

Cattyqwltr 10-06-2011 03:45 PM

How about a combination of a girlish colors with downunder theme units (animals, natural wonders, etc.)?

Judith1005 10-06-2011 03:47 PM

i vote for an aussie quilt with whimsy. that way your grandaughter gets to know you a little through your craft.

Willa 10-06-2011 04:27 PM

How about a girly, 2 sided quilt? One one side Australian animals on a big map that shows where you live, and on the other side a big map of Alaska with some animals on it from there and of course where she lives. You could say on your side From Grandma's house to (other side)[granddaughter's name]house with love.

Ellen 10-06-2011 04:58 PM

THINK PINK....she's just a little girl. History will come later. (LOL, there's more being made all the time. LOL)

I just got hit upside the head with a case of silly.

sampson001 10-06-2011 05:20 PM

That is a brilliant idea thank you. I will be making the quilt to take to Alaska with me when we visit July next year.

jaciqltznok 10-06-2011 05:26 PM

how about an I SPY type using the animals of both countries?? that would be awesome!

Which one was the brilliant idea??? Inquiring minds want to know. :D

dogpursemaker 10-06-2011 05:46 PM

I say Aussie all the way! You have such cool animals-I'd definitely go heavy on the critters :) My just turned four year old would definitely prefer critters over girly!

What kind of things does she like? She might find animals from either Aussie or Alaskan fun to look at and keep her warm this winter. I'm sure she'll really like anything you make for her but kids love animals so much. Good Luck. Sue

I'd do girly for sure. I think you can do the other topics as she ages. How about a paper doll quilt? Try a Google Image search for more ideas.

sampson001 10-06-2011 10:17 PM

The brilliant idea was Aussie theme on the front and Alaskan on the back. She has both cultures that way. But, you are giving me so many ideas which all sound fabulous, I may have to make more than one quilt.

sampson001 10-06-2011 10:19 PM

wow where did you get the aboriginal fabrics?

Just noticed you said you were 1000 miles from home, hence the Aboriginal fabrics

ZTAgirlknits 10-06-2011 10:22 PM

if she's a girly girl I would totally play that up! or it would be nice to have a quilt that "grows" with her, one that isn't so childlike that she will outgrow in in few years. Have fun with it!

JanetP 10-07-2011 03:33 AM

How about one with Koala bears in it? I know my granddaughter would love it.

SueDor 10-07-2011 03:37 AM

How about a girlie I-spy quilt?

steelecg 10-07-2011 03:54 AM

There are some great Australian designers - Michelle Hill, Sue Daley and the Vignette magazine lady? Maybe a pattern by one of them.
