I also love the blue and yellow. Either the blue or white sashing would look nice but I am wondering what yellow would look like. I think that would give it a 30's look and you have less yellow in your blocks than the other colors.
I like the blue the best. Your quilt is definitely NOT ugly! I really like the blue and yellow together, and actually am saving up fabric scraps to make a scrappy quilt very similar to yours.
I like both colors. Blue and yellow are my happy colors. My kitchen is blue and yellow. I have a room done in blue and yellow. When it is all done it will be beautiful. My very first wall hanging/quilt was blue and yellow!!!

ME TOO....

I like the blue even a darker blue would be pretty.

I like the blue sashing...it brightens up the yellow pieces. I'm going to be the oddball here because I do think there is such a thing as an ugly quilt. But you DO NOT win that prize with this quilt. I love where you're headed with this quilt. Blue and yellow combo is very pretty. If you can't bear to look at this "ugly" quilt when you are done, please send it to me. I'd love to look at it for you.
I think it is pretty. I like the white
The blue makes the lighter fabrics "pop"! And - it's your quilt - it's gorgeous!!
I love the selection of your fabric. Quilt is lovely and I like the blue sashing. Remember no quilt is ugly - they all develop there own charactor. Doris

Not ugly at all, the white sashing gives it a real lift.Perhaps you could put a stripped border using bits of all the fabrics in the blocks, or posts at the intersections.Just remember it will be unique, as most quilts are, even those that follow a pattern very rarely have the same fabric or quilting. You made it, be proud. Love
I rather like the blue that you are showing.
it makes the blocks stand out... |
I was making a 9 patch 2" squares quilt for my grandson and I thought it was ugly until I got the sashings on and it quilted. Now I love it. Once you get it together you will love it too. It looks so much better when it's together and quilted. I like the blue.
I isn't ugly at all! I love the colors. I like the blue best. It will be beautiful no matter which color you choose. Can't wait to see the finished product. I would certainly love to have a quilt like that!
I like both the white or maybe a brighter blue. I would try different width borders in both yellow and blue fabric that you have used in the blocks. I really like it and am sure you will too, you just have to get that final vision in your "Mind's Eye".
Love the white...and I think the squares are beautiful
I like the blue sashing better.
Finish it and ship it to me I like blue and yellow. It would go good in my blue bedroom too. Your quilt to be is very pretty wait till it is done. |
Blue, blue, blue. This color really brings ou the colors (which are really nice). I agree with the others there is nothing (repeat nothing) ugly about this quilt. You (we) are just to critical of our work. Be proud, good job.
My motto is: anything started is half done. This is your start to a world of quilting. I do these blocks all the time and do not consider them ugly, yours or mine. 4 Square blocks are like old friends, they age but they don't change and someday you will look at this quilt and say, well done, my very first and give it a hug.
Get on with it, dark blue would be my choice. Carol J. |
I love the colors and the four patch blocks are so classic. I like the blue sashing the best. You might try to put the blocks on point for some drama. On point adds such visual interest and always makes things look much more difficult than they really are. It will be an amazing quilt no matter what you do.
I like the blue with the white cornerstones. I think the white background in the squares 'bleeds' into the white sashing.
Sash it with the white, then border with some blues or vice versa
I agree with others that there is no such thing as an ugly qult. The blue would be great but whatever you use will be fine. This is your quilt and you do what you want to do with it and you will be surprised ant the end result. I recently did a baby quilt in blue and yellow and ended up putting yellow sashing between the rows and blue on the outside. It was gorgeous. Unfortunately I did not take a picture.
It is not an ugly quilt! I prefer the white sashing...looks fresh to me. I made a blue and yellow quilt too and used white for the background. It was blue and yellow appliqued 'rag' flowers on white...it hangs on the wall in my spare bedroom and just sets off the room for guests!
It's not ugly.
Try some neutral colors to bring out the blues and the yellows. Go to a fabric store and lay out the squares on bolts of cloth until something pleases you. Try putting the patches also in another formation. I know for myself I don't like the non uniform look. For me I'd probably be putting the yellow and glowy ones in middle, sash it and then surround with blue? Or do something in a pattern. Rearrange till it suits you Or you could try instead of neutral or complementing colors, try contrasting ones. Blue and yellow are contrasting, if blue isn't working, try yellow or even heck try purple. You could try batiks as well. |
I would gowith the blue. If you still don't like it then
donate it to an organization that gives ugly quilts as they call them to the homeless and shelters. |
white

I agree with everyone else. Both colors look great. And the colors in the squares could go with just about any background, not only blue or white. Since you're unhappy with both choices, maybe you should look at the room you want to put it in, and see what color feels best. light or dark, and go with that?
I thought my first quilt was ugly too, but I think it's because I struggled with it so much and really wanted it to turn out like the ones my friends made, with many years of experience under their belt. I struggle with making color/pattern choices, and find that taking a black and white photo of the material samples helps me choose and organize it in my brain. I also take a picture of each quilt I finish, only 5 so far, and it helps me see what great strides I'm making. And yes, I still think my first quilt was ugly, so I gave it to a local mission and I like to think that someone less fortunate than I loves it. |
I agree with dunster-- no sashing. Use outer borders to make the quilt larger and tie it together optically if you would like to do that. The blocks would look best right next to each other By the way the fabric choices look great!

The white has a summer look to it. The blue has an all year round look. Love it! |
I love the blue!! I'm wondering if the blue on the bed is more "dull" than in the blocks - maybe if it were more brighter-ish like the blue in the blocks it would click for you. Either way - I think it will be a gorgeous quilt!!!
I like the blue.
I like the blue, and it is not an ugly quilt. You should have seen my first one. Just cut out the squares, no 1/4 seam, sewed them together and quilted. I call it my "whang-stitch" quilt. But, I still have it.
I like the blocks. However you decide to set them will be alright. The sashing would be fine but you might consider alternating a solid color block to separate the 4 patches.
I think you will be quite pleased with your finished product. I love blue and yellow together. I like the white sashing...
Your blocks look great! Trust me, I am new too, and my first quilt top is not the greatest, because I was not always able to line up the points. Yours looks way better than mine. But even though mine is slightly off kilter in certain areas... The one saving grace is that I used pretty fabric. :) It seems to hide the imperfections quite well.
You chose very nice fabric that looks great together. The soft blue would look great for the sashing. I would never donate my first attempts at quilting. I think no matter what, you will be very pleased with it once you are done. There is something to be said for accomplishing a task that is time consuming and not easy to do on the first try. |
I like them on the blue. Of course, my favorite color is blue.
  |
No such thing as an ugly quilt - love the white sashing as it reminds me of a fifty cent quilt I own; I call it the fifty cent because I purchased a raffle ticket for for that price and won the quilt that was given as the prize.
