d.rickman gave me the best hint and requested I post:

My cutting mat was warped by an iron.. yes, i used it to iron .. a brief mistake.. the mat warped.

d.rickman put her own warped Cutting mat outside in the HOT sun for several hours, let it cool completely for several more hours and ... It worked ! Flattened out !

Great hint ! Waiting for one of those last 90 degree days that sneaks up on us this late.

Thanks for the tip !

MellieKQuilter 08-26-2011 12:39 PM

Send it to me! We have 90 degree days lately! ;-)

I DID THE SAME THING!! - THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE TIP

I'm on a trip right now, but when I get back home, don't think will have a problem "waiting" for a hot day. Has been in triple digit temps there for almost 3 mo's. Supposed to be 108 there today

CloverPatch 08-26-2011 01:06 PM

mine warped because IT WAS in the sun.

bnlmom 08-26-2011 01:10 PM

Why didn't I do this for my mat a few weeks ago!

Glad I'm not the only one who's done this.

Thanx for the idea.... A few years ago I bought a new mat, laid it as flat as I could on a blanket that was over all our shopping, and by the time we got home (2.5 hours) the mat was a mess. The next time we were in town my husband told the clerk, "We want a mat, but you have to provide the box it came in." They found the box (big enough for several and we bought it and got it home OK. Can't imagine why they don't provide boxes automatically! Now I'm going to take that warped baby outside and see what happens. Will just hope the chickens and cats stay off it!!!!!!!!

SMR 08-26-2011 03:31 PM

had friend who took warped mat and put on top of her car in sun. straightened mat just remember to take off before driving, which she didn't.

Wishing you a 90 deg day....here, we've had more than our usual 90 deg days this summer.

dunster 08-26-2011 05:07 PM

Are the lines still straight after you do this?

Robinmg 08-26-2011 05:13 PM

Did you have to put something heavy on top of it?

I thought the very same thing, you just beat me to it.

chairjogger 08-26-2011 06:47 PM

I don't know about the lines.. will have to wait on that answer.. and no, I don't think she put anything on top of it.. just layed it out flat.

on top of the car.. good idea ! would be hotter.

I have laughed at a few of these posts.. the trials of getting a good - big - cutting mat !

Nice to read all these ! thanks for posting !

My Olfa cutting mat got warped when my dearest love threw it willy-nilly into the back of his car when we were moving.

I laid it out on top of my car in the heat and within a few hours, it was flat as a pancake.

HOWEVER!!! The measurements were all wrong. If I followed the grid when cutting, I got wavy, wonky lines. I got sick and tired of having to measure everything with a yardstick and just bought a new mat.

cjsparks 08-26-2011 07:20 PM

Beware. If you use the lines to cut by the measurements could be off. I had a 12 inch mat that warped and the measurements shrunk.

Sew Freak 08-26-2011 07:26 PM

I did the same thing...I fixed it by warming it up again and then setting some books on it for several hours. It worked...it got flat again. Good luck with whatever you try!

MistyMarie 08-26-2011 07:30 PM

I turned on my oven, let it heat for just a couple of minutes, then placed my warped mat on the top shelf with the oven door open, As soon as it was warmed up and pliable, I took it out and laid it on the concrete in my garage, placing a heavy container on top of it. It was perfectly flat. However, the measurements were off. I never use my mat lines though, so it wasn't a big deal.

raedar63 08-26-2011 07:31 PM

I put mine on the freezer and then placed 9x13 pans on top of it ,then poured boiling water in the pans. Straightened it right out and the lines were fine.

Jingle 08-26-2011 07:37 PM

I only have a warped spot on the side about middle way where I set my hot iron. I bought one today at Wal Mart, 1/2 the price of Hobby Lobby. I've had that mat for 10-15 years, may be even longer.

thrums 08-26-2011 08:25 PM

Thanks for the tip. I really did the job on mine. First I left it in the car under the hot sun I had a box on top of it to keep it flat, but under the floor map there were some bumps. So I tried to iron the warps out (used foil in between). No luck.

I'll try your idea. I've got nothing to loose now.

Help!! My cutting mat was WARPED by the sun... what do I do??
Been warped for years now and I tried to flatten it with the iron too! It did not help but didn't make it worse either.
Hope this method helps you though.
Any suggestions on my dilemma?

Dee G 08-27-2011 03:09 AM

Sun, oven, freezer to much for me! Maybe I will feed my warped mat to Irene tonight. Give her something to blow away. :-)

tmg 08-27-2011 03:20 AM

The 90's is the norm for us this time of the year. We even have some day's it has been in the 100's. I would like to send you some if I could. :)

plmsmith 08-27-2011 04:52 AM

Another idea for a warped mat, if the warp does not flatten and you have to get a new one don't toss your old one. You can take a paper pattern glue it to your mat and cut out now you have a template that will last a while. I used my drimel to cut the mat.

cat-on-a-mac 08-27-2011 05:27 AM

Thanks for this suggestion. I didn't iron on mine, but I often have my laptop sitting on it (so I can keep tabs on the board while I sew ;-) ) and I think the heat from the computer caused some warping. Now, I always elevate the computer on an old CD case.

Maybe I can fix the damage .... once Irene moves through and the sun comes back out!

vondae 08-27-2011 05:54 AM

Send that mat to me here in the Texas Panhandle to put in the sun. Been over 100 degrees for weeks. They say that Monday it may cool off to 95 or so. WooHoo! a cool spell, can't wait. Good luck with all those warped mat.

grandma anna 08-27-2011 06:04 AM

I'm glad it worked for you. I left my mat in the car, where the temp got up to about 120 and, of course, the mat warped. I tried putting it on the driveway, which gets full sun all day, tried putting glass over it in the sun, tried putting bricks on it in the sun and finally put it in a guild garage sale, where someone snapped it up immediately. I wish the sun had done its magic for me (we've had more than 60 days of 100 plus degree weather here this summer) and I hope it did for her. froggyintexas

mountain deb 08-27-2011 06:29 AM

I did something similar several years ago, although I left it on a table in the direct sunlight.

paz6204 08-27-2011 06:29 AM

Send it to me.... we have been up to 115 this past week!!!
I did wonders for my warped mat!!!

Ladybug 1938 08-27-2011 07:23 AM

Anna O 08-27-2011 07:52 AM

Good to know, thanks!

MoMoSews 08-27-2011 07:57 AM

Same here! Left it on the table on sun porch!

KathyAire 08-27-2011 08:24 AM

Thanks for the tip. I have a warped mat. Just bought a new one on Monday. Haven't had the heart to throw the old one away, though.
I'm putting mine in the hot Texas sun today. Hope it doesn't melt.

But you can still use the same process to to flatten it out. Just make sure it is on a flat surface and let it stay in the sun several hours in the heat. Allow it to completely cool on a flat surface and it should do the trick for you.
