This is the third nasty cold I have had this year. My lips are so chapped they feel like they have been scoured with a Brillo pad, my nose runs like Niagra Falls, my head seems to have been filled with that blown in foam insulation, and my chest feels like it's on fire. But other than that I feel pretty good for an ol' geezer. Couldn't sleep so I thought I'd get up and carouse the internet (too old and too sick to carouse the bars!) with a nice hot cup of tea. Dadburnit, as a newly diagnosed diabetic I can't even have real sugar in it! As my dear, saintly mother would have said "Old age isn't for the weak."
No need for condolences, there is a bright side to all this. Since I haven't felt like going anywhere for the last few days I am getting some quilting/sewing done. Finished another Christmas stocking for my niece's 6mo old (I make them for all new additions to the family...by birth or marriage), a tree skirt for one of my sisters, a small table topper for another sister, several hand towels with Christmas appliques, and two little ornaments for...well, just because I wanted to try the technique!

SuziC 12-10-2010 03:35 AM

So sorry you are down and out with a cold. I hope you are at least enjoying your sewing time. Sending a HUG to help you feel better real soon

raptureready 12-10-2010 04:42 AM

I understand completely! My cold's been here since the day after Thanksgiving and shows no sign of letting up. Add to that the possibility of a fracture in my foot, not having the tree up yet, or the shopping done and yeah, you know it's time for Christmas. Seems to happen every year. Hope you're feeling better soon.

sewgull 12-10-2010 06:39 AM

Both of you need to go to the doctor, NOW.
I could not get rid a cough, until one evening within 5 min. My chest(bronchial) started hurting and was coughing my head off.
Went to dr. next morning almost had pneumonia.

CarrieAnne 12-10-2010 06:44 AM

Hugs!!!!!!!!!!! I had some nasty bug a few weeks back, sicker than I have been for 10 years.
Get well soon!

bj 12-10-2010 07:08 AM

I know just how you feel. I've had this cold/congestion for 2 months. Now it only gets me at night. Can't sleep too well for coughing from the tickle at the back of my throat. My DH has taken up residence in the guest room and gives me dirty looks every time I cough. I don't blame him. It's been a royal pain. I feel like I'm on the mend, just not there yet. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

nativetexan 12-10-2010 07:08 AM

when i went to Houston last May i caught a cold. came home with it too. my Doctor told me to get Mucinex DM and it helped.

sueisallaboutquilts 12-10-2010 07:15 AM

I had a really bad cold in October that wouldn't go away and it was really bronchitis! Mucinex DM really does help but I had to go to the doctor for abx also. Was sick for a long time!! :(
Take care everyone!! Don't overdo- easy to say, I know.
HUGS

It's nice you have made the best of your poor health!

my name appears at the bottom of your message, sorry, i was trying to tell you that i think you can have honey in your hot tea, diabetics can have honey, because it's a natural sugar, and it will help you feel warm and help your throat. to be sure , ask your dr. but i think he will agree, feel better soon. Santa is coming!!!!!

Annaquilts 12-10-2010 07:59 AM

Sending hugs. I have been nursing a hacking couch since before Thanksgiving and it looks like it is not leaving for some time. Also quilting away.

Actually no, honey isn't safe in quantity either - all simple sugars are trouble, so honey = sugar = a bagel, really. But there's always Splenda, and I like sugar free hot cocoa in my coffee with a little peppermint extract for days like these!

Dixiechunk, watch that cold - we diabetics have a tendency to stay sick longer than others, and get worse more quickly, too! When your blood sugar has been under control for a while your immune system will be much stronger again. Just take care that you don't let this cold linger for too long - see your doctor, or at least someone's doctor if yours has turned into a pain in the neck. :)

Meanwhile, kudos for all the work you're accomplishing! I'm jealous - I'm way behind on my projects!

BellaBoo 12-10-2010 08:15 AM

I go to the Dr. as soon as I know I don't feel good. I know there is no cure for a cold but there are meds that make me feel better. Mucinex is great to relieve congestion with no drugged up feeling. I get a prescription cough syrup. Nothing over the counter works when I'm trying to sleep. The only home remedy that will work for me is to breath apple cider vinegar steam. It's nasty but it works wonders for me. I boil a pot when anyone is sick and it disinfects the air in the house. The smell goes away in minutes.

BellaBoo 12-10-2010 08:19 AM

Have you tried Agave Nectar? It's great for diabetics. It tastes like a mild honey but doesn't spike your blood sugar. I buy it at Walmart usually in the sugar aisle sometimes it's with the honey and sometimes it is with the no gluten products. I don't think the stockers know exactly what it is.

Connie in CO 12-10-2010 08:25 AM

I'm sorry your sick, hugs and kisses,(over the computer)

sassey 12-10-2010 05:15 PM

I recomend cough syrup especially made for diabetics for some reason it works better than anything else seems to knock the cold out, I even recomend it to non diabetic friends most drug store carry it

NUTMEG10 12-11-2010 05:37 AM

Having had pneumonia 3 times since March I would tell you to run to the doctor asap. You do need antibiotic to get rid of it. I feel for you and anyone else that is having this problem. Our age does not help and I have COPD after years of smoking. Mucinex does help but will not get rid of the infection. Have some hot chicken soup and bundle up in your quilt and read a book or watch your favorite tv.

krabadan 12-11-2010 05:43 AM

Love your sense of humor, that must keep you going and happy.

OmaForFour 12-11-2010 07:26 AM

Get yourself some Echinacea to build up your immune system! Buy some chapstick. Get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids. When you are all better, go get a flu shot! You, as a diabetic, cannot be sick this much and often!

More power to you. When I get sick I don't do anything. Of course when I do get sick I'm down for the count. No such thing in my life like getting a little cold. I go all the way. Hope you feel better soon.

lovinquilting 12-11-2010 07:45 AM

Don't know if any of you have ever heard of the Neti Pot (think that's how you spell it). I saw it on Dr. Oz last year and bought one. It comes in a kit and has packets of saline rinse in. It rinses out our sinuses and help prevent the mucous from going into your chest. Everything starts in the nose so it really makes sense. At the sign of a cold I use it right away and have really kept down those nasty colds. I usually get bronchitis at least once a year and have not had it for the last two years. My husband didn't believe it until he got a really bad cold last month. He didn't use it until the cold got really bad. Well when he did use it, he couldn't believe how it cleaned out his sinuses and he was actually able to breathe normally. You can buy them at most drug stores. Good luck!!!

I use the Neti pot all the time. It takes a little time to get used to it, but if a person keeps at it, those things really help! Of course, being an old swimmer, I am really used to feeling water in my sinus...lol. I have kept colds away from using the Neti pot !
And Dixiechunk I was going to suggest you try Truvia, or Stevia in the Raw. Both are sugar substitutes made from the Stevia plant. I like these better because the others make me sick. I actually grew Stevia last summer and tried to use it to make some sweet tea for my hubby, but it just didnt work. I ended up buying "stevia in the raw" and really liked it. YOu can find it in the sugar isle at Walmart, with the other sugar substitues. This doesnt have any kind of after taste for me.
Hope you get to feeling better...and dont let it go too long....others are so right, it can turn into pheumonia very quickly. Nice you can do a little sewing...definitly get to a doctor if you dont feel like sewing anymore!

Sweeterthanwine 12-11-2010 08:17 AM

A couple years ago I came down with a cough that would not go away. I was on vacation in the fall in Yellowstone. When I got home, went to the Dr. and he diagnosed me with bronchitis and COPD. Put me on Advair and have not had the problem since. Although I ran out of med. a couple weeks ago and before I could get it refilled, that nasty cough returned. After starting up the med. again, it went away. It is an expensive med. ($253.00 last time for 1 month inhaler)and my ins. won't pay for it. I can get it in Mexico for $55.00 so I stock up when I go there in the winter. Have your Dr. check you out, it may not be just a cold.

trolleystation 12-11-2010 08:31 AM

I have found coughing and bronchial and sinus congestion can be helped by getting a humidifier. Also for night time coughing.....rub Vicks Vaporub on the soles of your feet, put on socks and go to bed. It really does help. Hope you are bettr so that you enjoy Christmas.

FarmStitcher 12-11-2010 09:45 AM

They tell me oregano oil applied to the soles of the feet helps but I haven't used it. I sip a cup of hot liquid and inhale the steam. Together the heat and steam help my sinuses, even if it's weak coffee or tea without medicine in it. Also, sit in the sun as much as possible, it does wonders for you. Do take care of yourself and try not to overdo during the winter holidays.

Karen Duncan 12-11-2010 03:31 PM

there is a lot of Type h flu going around. A Dr. can diagnose it . I got antibiotics, prednazone, and cough syrup. Didn't have a cough when I went in to se the Dr. at the end of the first bottle of syrup, I started to cough. Now on second bottle, my cough is loosening and I feel much better. It is nasty stuff...

I don't know if this will help, but I used to get 'colds' all the time too. I haven't had one since I started getting flu and pneumonia shots. It works so well I keep track so I never miss one! If you go to the pharmacy and get a bottle (not spray can!) of nasal saline, it will help unstuff your head without using drugs. Bend your head slightly forward when you use it for best results. I use it all the time. Best $2.00 a month I spend, AND no symptom rebound, like you can get from drugs.

Haven't tried that to get rid of a cold (I use it on my chest) but rubbing on your feet & then putting on cotton socks help each the burning, itching, pain of neuropothy (spelling) that often comes with diabities. I use it all the time. Last bad cold my 20 something dgd got last month turned out to whooping cough. Thank goodness her 18 month old dd had her vacination. It seem to be going around here in Montana.

I am not a fan of flu shots (drugs) but use a neti pot, water, water, water. Vit D, Cod liver Oil, walking is good exercise, and bounce on a mini trampoline. Also look into the chinese healing Qigong and of course rest.

Well, you may be down, but you are not out by a long shot. You are getting more done than I do when I'm healthy! A cold should last a week or 7 days, which ever comes first -- seriously, if symptoms last weeks or months one needs to investigate allergies, asthma, or other causes. Another device to do saline nasal rinsing is put out by a company called Ayr, and is a squirt bottle, which I find easier to use than the Neti pot. Once you get used to using these things you'll never go back to just blowing your nose and suffering.

Which only works if I don't pour Agave syrup like it's going out of style

Really, a little sugar isn't the devil but it definitely adds up fast. I have not tried Agave syrup because it's still far too high for my blood sugar, but that doesn't mean others with diabetes can't use it. Test, test and test!

And I don't know about you all, but I stick myself enough times at the sewing machine to check my blood sugar several times a day. I had to be careful not to donate a whole lot of DNA to my MIL this Christmas.

donnalynett 12-11-2010 10:08 PM

I've had my cold since Thanksgiving and so have the rest of the group that attended the dinner. Mucinex is what the doctor ordered and is sure helping keep it out of my chest. Unfortunately I now have 2 cold sores that really hurt.

fishnlady 12-12-2010 12:04 AM

They call it the golden years but I can tell you the only gold about it is the gold that flows out of your pocket to the doctors pockets. Sorry you have been ill. Dear Lord, help our quilting friend Dixiechunk.
