Sometimes I use glue or starch to keep difficult bits together temporarily, and both always wash out.

I really have never heard of this before. I still can not wrap my head around how just pressing two fabrics will keep them from shifting during sewing.

Yes, it helps keep the pieces together when moving from the cutting/assembly table to the machine.

I'm the same way about planes. How do they manage to get that much weight in the air? However, they do, and this does. Try it with some scraps.
