It sounds like maybe it sort of mashes the layers together and they kinda interlock from the pressure. Maybe.

Not sure exactly what it does, but I've had borders that didn't want to go together smoothly and I've pinned and then pressed and the borders went on really, really well.

Excellent idea! I don't usually keep the iron close by... but I will certainly try this... I really don't like using pins... this might be a perfect alternative!
