Hobby Lobby Fabric

We just got a Hobby Lobby here and I'm so excited!!! At last I have a place to get quilting supplies and they've got a really nice selection of fabric but I do want to ask everyone a question about their fabric. Have you used it? Does it seem to be good quality? Has it held up well in your quilts that have been washed several times? Thanks!!! :)

Lori S 06-15-2014 10:29 AM

Hobby Lobby carries lots of manufactures of quilt fabric. Some very good , some just OK. Its tough to make a blanket statement on all of the fabric they carry.

linda8450 06-15-2014 10:30 AM

I have used it, some is better than others, as anywhere. I try to feel and judge the thread count, not too flimsy, not too stiff, etc. I have used several pieces and mixed it with quilt store quality and don't seem to be able to tell a difference in the washed product. Joanns and Hancocks as well, try to get the best for your $$. I do love Hobby Lobby, ours is just a year or so old and I love it!

athomenow 06-15-2014 10:36 AM

I bought a bunch of close out Christmas fabrics years ago and I'm still using some of them. They were very nice quality and have held up well in table runners and placemats. I have also bought some of their cottons but JoAnn's is closer so I don't go as much as I should to check it out. I'd say buy some and try it out. Can't be worse than some other places.

I love their fabric!

Never had any problems with it, and I buy it ALL the time.

Here are some of my recent fabric purchases from HL.

I am making aprons with these fabrics all with the BBQ theme fabric

I have never had a problem with their fabric.

Terri D. 06-15-2014 11:01 AM

Agree with Lori S. It's hit or miss.

One thing I like about having a Hobby Lobby close by is that they offer their cotton solids at 30% off every day. I pop in there every so often to purchase a yard or two of white or cream plus one or two other colors to use for pattern testing, learning how to make a block I've never made before, or trying out a new tool or ruler--better than wasting your good fabric.

TexasSunshine 06-15-2014 11:17 AM

I have used plenty of HL fabric and really like it and have had no problems.

Auntevie 06-15-2014 11:25 AM

I have used it and really like it. But I honestly do not trust the quality of fabrics at joannes

citruscountyquilter 06-15-2014 11:26 AM

I have purchased from Hobby Lobby. It is not quilt shop quality, more like the quality one finds at JoAnn's, Walmart etc. It depends on what I'm making. If I'm going to put in a lot of work on a quilt then I'm most likely going to use higher quality fabric. If it is for a wall hanging, table runner, pot holders etc then I'm not as fussy. They often have good sales on batting by the yard and I have used that (Warm and Natural/White). It will never replace a quilt shop for me but it is certainly a source that I shop for and purchase fabric.

quilts4charity 06-15-2014 12:28 PM

I buy from mine all the time especially when they mark it down to $2.00 a yard, I just bought a bunch 2 weeks ago!!!

SlightlyOffQuilter 06-15-2014 12:45 PM

I LOVE our Hobby Lobby ! I use alot of their fabrics. Their clearance section is my downfall EVERY single time !

kiffie2413 06-15-2014 12:58 PM

I bought some lovely black/white/green fabrics from them about 3 months ago, 3 different coordinating prints. I've made a pillowcase cover from some of it, my niece has washed it a few times, and it still looks great.
I agree that some of the fabric seems "thinner" and lower quality than others, but that happens even at some quilt shops. I just try and check it out by feel and texture. And if it's one I love, I just buy it..I can always make something from it. Plus I have to keep my "fabric shop" (as my dgd calls my fabric room) stash up! Lol..

Just make sure you can feel it. I have purchased fabric and not yet a problem. They usually always have 30% off sale running and I always check the remnant bin. Prices are about the same as anywhere else and it kind of depends on location.

KimS 06-15-2014 01:28 PM

Thank you to everyone for responding. I'm just so excited because now I don't have to order everything I need. I can just get in the car and go to Hobby Lobby and spend more money than I would had I just ordered what I needed. I told my husband I was in there Saturday and he asked me what did I buy. When I said nothing he almost passed out! LOL!!!

Love this! My hubby would've reacted the same...lol
Enjoy your new HL!

I like our Hobby Lobby a lot, and I buy quite a bit of fabric there. There is a 40% off coupon that comes out once a week in our newspaper, and if you want to use it instead of the 30% off that their fabric usually is, just tell the lady cutting it out and she will write down the "regular" price so you can use the coupon. (I don't always remember this, but I cut my coupon out every week...just in case. You can also find the coupon online...) Oh, to answer your question, I do like their fabric and it wears well. Like others have said, just look at it, as it is not all the same.

moonrise 06-15-2014 02:27 PM

I love Hobby Lobby! :) Most of their fabric is very nice (better than Joann's, in my opinion). Every once in awhile I'll run across a bolt that's not quite up to par, but for the most part, I'm very pleased.

Ditto about using their 40% off coupons! I don't know if all HL's do it, but if you forget your paper coupon, you can pull it up on your phone, show it to them, and they'll take it too. They let you use 1 coupon per person, so DH and I always check out separately so we can use 2 coupons. :)

We've got 3 HL stores within 15-25 minutes of our house, but I recently found out that they're putting in another store just a mile away! DH groaned, but he can't say much, because we're also getting a Bass Pro Shops and a Cabella's! :D

Anoka Quilter 06-15-2014 03:00 PM

Quilty Louie, I love your fabric choices. So what are you going to make from all those wonderful fabrics.

Neesie 06-15-2014 03:24 PM

I love my Hobby Lobby, for fabric. The quality varies, so you really have to feel the fabric. Some is LQS quality and some is only so-so. Most is in-between the two and of very good quality, for an extremely reasonable price.

annievee 06-15-2014 03:27 PM

I use Hobby Lobby fabrics a lot-never any problems with it. Love the per cent off coupons.

GagaSmith 06-15-2014 04:21 PM

I like most of Hobby lobby's fabric. They carry Robert Kaufmann Kona cotton at our store here and have a pretty good selection.
I just read in today's paper that they lost a lawsuit because some of their fabric is "on sale" for 30% off every day. The decision was against them because if something is on sale every day for more than a year then it really isn't a sale. Don't know what changes will be made because of this.

ManiacQuilter2 06-15-2014 04:34 PM

I haven't been disappointed with ANY fabric I have purchased at HL. I think the quality matchs that of a LQS if there was one in my town. They may be selling discontinued or older prints. I do think the quality is a step up from Walmart and JAF. Just my opinion.

coopah 06-15-2014 04:42 PM

It's like anywhere else, check the bolt and use your judgement. I've used their fabrics and not had any difficulties. The ladies in that department are pleasant and very helpful. I asked one where the "squeezy" things were for purses, and she said she knew exactly what I meant...she led me right to them! Enjoy the new store!

franc36 06-15-2014 05:16 PM

Hobby Lobby is my "go to" place for Kona cotton. Check the bolt and be sure that it is Kona cotton by Robert Kaufmann. Once in a while I buy other quilting fabric there. I do check the feel first. I have been pleased with all quilting fabric I have purchased there. I do ask for the regular price so I can use the 40% off coupon. Since I do not have a smart phone, I print off a coupon before I leave home. You can use one coupon a day. I always check out the quilting supplies each time I go there. Hobby Lobby is a fun store to visit.

QUILTNMO 06-15-2014 05:23 PM

Quilty-Louise 06-15-2014 05:32 PM

I am making aprons with the fabrics.

I have found the quality of fabric by the feel. If it has the feel, then it is good. My mother taught me that and you can tell the difference between the softness and the rough feel of the fabric. I don't do Hobby Lobby for certain reasons, but I can find a good fabric at JoAnn's, Hancock's and any place that sells fabric just by the feel. If it feels good against your skin, then it'll be a good quilt. Edie

AnnT 06-16-2014 03:04 AM

I buy fabric from Hobby Lobby a lot. I look the fabric over carefully as in any fabric store. I have yet to be disappointed with a purchase. One thing I like about Hobby Lobby is they generally are consistent in stock with their non-seasonal fabrics, if I need some more or decide I like a different color I saw when I bough the 1st one, I can more often than not find that fabric when I go back. Not 100% of the time but more often than with other fabric stores.

Yooper32 06-16-2014 03:15 AM

There is only one in the state of WV and it is sadly too far for me to drive there. I love Hobby Lobby and have bought many a piece of fabric there when I lived in CO. I have never gotten any fabric that I didn't like. I assume that it isn't all quilt-shop quality, but most of it is equal in quality. Some really good buys there, lucky you.
PS, I now shop online for Hobby Lobby and have never gotten a bad piece of fabric.

I have made a quilt using all Hobby Lobby Fabric. The fabric has held up well. Sorry the picture is not in focus.
I like using the coupon on fabric at Hobby Lobby. Have fun fabric shopping!

petpainter 06-16-2014 04:53 AM

I have only had a problem with one piece that I bought there. I prewashed and it just lost all body and frayed like crazy.
Good luck with all other fabric but still not the same as LQS fabric.

sharisews 06-16-2014 05:01 AM

It is like most fabric purchases. You just have to be discriminating in what you buy. I have bought expensive fabric from LQS that turned out to be less than desirable and fabric from HOBBY LOBBY, Walmart, online, etc that was fine.

institches33 06-16-2014 05:01 AM

No problems here. I was looking for a specific fabric that was discontinued several years ago and found a bolt at Hobby Lobby, so their fabrics may not be the newest line. OK by me!

celwood 06-16-2014 05:12 AM

Our Hobby Lobby carries Kona Cottons and other brand name fabrics.

nstitches4u 06-16-2014 05:16 AM

I have bought quite a bit of fabric from Hobby Lobby. I have found their fabric quality to be better than JoAnn's.

running1 06-16-2014 05:18 AM

You will love Hobby Lobby... don't forget the coupon as others have mentioned... I just really wanted to tell Quilty-Louise how much I love her avatar!!
And I, too, am happy that a new Hobby Lobby is opening soon a few miles closer to us than the others in OKC...

bigsister63 06-16-2014 05:25 AM

I like HL fabric. I think the quality is inbetween Joann and LQS. However they do carry Kona at a cheaper price than Joanns- always 30% off. I have seen the same fabric at HL and LQS so the quality must be similiar. Also they often have 50% off sales on their "sew-ology" brand notions. Also if you have a 40% coupon you can ask the fabric cutter to mark the fabric at regular price and then have it rung up at 40% off at the register. However they only take one coiupon per day and they do not accept other store coupons. Also they have a good/cute selection of home decorating stuff and crafts!

sewbizgirl 06-16-2014 05:34 AM

Yes, Hobby Lobby has nice fabric. I've made quilts with it and they are great quilts. As with any fabric, from any store, I always do the 'hand' test... touching and feeling for quality. Our local Hancock's Fabrics has gotten so bad that most of the fabric fails the 'hand' test-- feels like cardboard. But I haven't run into that at Hobby Lobby. Their prices are really good, too. The quilting cottons are always 30% off. Go ahead and try some!

The only complaint I would have about Hobby Lobby's fabrics is that they keep the same prints forever, it seems like. You can go in once a year and find the same stuff in there. I wish they would rotate what they carry more often.

scrapinmema 06-16-2014 06:05 AM

I buy fabric from them all the time but I go by how the fabric feels and the light test. If I hold it up and can see through it goes back on the shelf, but of course I do that with all fabric.
