It holds my pedal in place!

I finally found a product that keeps my sewing machine pedal from scooting away. It's made to stick on the dashboard to hold your cellphone. For just $8 I can finally know where that pesky pedal is all day. The only catch is that it won't stick on a carpet. I found mine at the local shipping business, but I bet they're available at office supply stores.

spokanequilter 11-13-2012 06:51 PM

Good suggestion..... except I have a carpeted floor in my sewing room. I recently discovered that Command strips work great for that pedal problem. I put the sticky side on the bottom of the pedal, and the nubby, velcro-like side down on the carpet. Haven't had a problem with the pedal slipping away since I put it on....

stillclock 11-13-2012 06:57 PM

oh i hope this thread gets a load of answers because i have been waiting for it my whole sewing life....

I have a pedal mat (I think I bought it from Connecting Threads), but it still scooted. So a couple of weeks ago I bought a small bath rug to go under the pedal mat. So far it is working. Feels kinda of weird that my pedal is staying in one place - I have been chasing my pedal for years....lol

Peckish 11-13-2012 07:15 PM

I have carpet also, and found that a dollar-store silicone trivet works best. Second best is two cheapo dollar-store mouse pads, glued back-to-back, so the grippy sides are out.

I purchased a Steady Betty foot pedal rest and it is absolutely worthless. My foot pedal scoots across it like it's buttered. So, I put it on top of my ironing tray and press small blocks on it. It works great for THAT purpose!

Jo C 11-13-2012 07:24 PM

Shoot, i have mine taped to the floor...i would love to find something better..silicone trivets didn't work, but i do use them under my machine to keep it from walking away.

LoupEsprit 11-13-2012 07:44 PM

My problem is that mine slips forward and under the table's middle rung (I sew at the kitchen table) and when I lift my foot, it KEEPS SEWING!!

::skips off to look for cellphone pad::

Jerudy 11-13-2012 08:02 PM

I took 2 mouse pads and glued them right sides together. It holds my foot pedal right where I need it to be.

NanaCsews2 11-13-2012 08:39 PM

I use the 2" wide industrial velcro tape. The car mat I used worked very well, as the pointy things on the bottom 'dug' into the carpet. But I also needed to have a short wooden foot stool under the table and the one I had was a little long and got in the way of the car mat. So, I put the velcro on the bottom of the pedal and placed the loop section on the carpet. It sticks and never moves! I have pulled the hook and loops apart to vacuum the floor. Then press back together. Already had it on hand for other household projects so was no expense to my sewing and quilting.

In sewing room I have a rubber backed doormat and pedal still moves. I'm going to try velcro on the bottom of the pedal and see if that stops the creeping. I quilt in dining room, hardwood floor and I use a rubber mat, still moves. I just keep pulling it back to where I need it to be.

Geri B 11-14-2012 07:09 AM

Here is an idea I read somewhere and it helps but is not the total cure: tie the wire connecting the pedal to machine to the leg of the table closest to where you want your pedal to be.....giving it just enough cord to stay there......like a dog a a short leash...moves a bit but not all over the place. I work on the cement floor of the basement and I think I will try that velcro strip...........nothing to lose, sanity to gain. My old machine (viking) pedal never moved and when I got this "new" thing(babylock) I was frustrated with the scooting around.........and I refuse to purchase some pedal caddy...the mfgr of machine should make their pedals better..........

thimblebug6000 11-14-2012 08:17 AM

I have carpet in sewing room and took a long piece of duct tape, double folded it so it sticks to the bottom of the pedal & then just place it on the carpet. Works great!

GrandmaNewt 11-14-2012 08:41 AM

I also have carpet in my sewing room. For many years now I have had the self stick hook side of velcro stuck on the bottom of my pedal.

my fw, my old necchi & now my janome..pedal always moved. i use the woven looking crinkellaly looking shelf liner stuff. under my machine, under the presser foot and under flat tupperware thingy fr a yardsale from sliding on table. i use the tupperware thingy to keep cutters, scissors etc in one spot when not in use. i have twist ties around the cords from table top to floor all neat and together. then wrap all around table leg to keep them neatly together at floor level. i use the din room table for my sewing, small house and the din room leads to every where, so fairly hi traffic area w cord control a must. as long as i am here sharing...i made a "design wall" out of long piece of felt w rolled seam at top for body, nylon rings for hanging the "wall" from picture hanger hook stuck into top of deck door frame (leads fr din rm to deck) so no holes in walls. pocket hem at bottom w dowel fr hardware store to keep it hanging down straight. i don't do many bed quilts since living here...besides...there are only so many beds to cover :)). i prefer working w minis or wall hangings.

DOTTYMO 11-14-2012 11:17 PM

It depends where I sew. But at first I used the machine button and not foot pedal. Now I put that stuff you can buy to put on dashboards to keep still use same stuff for my hands when quilting. I also plac epedal against a solid leg of the coffee table . My other problem. With a foot pedal is .........how do you stop a dog going asleep on the pedal.

kuntryquilter 11-15-2012 03:44 AM

I use sticky back velcro.

Debbie C 11-15-2012 03:58 AM

I use the rubberized shelf liners that I put my glassware on. I cut a piece about an inch over-sized for my foot pedal and it works beautifully keeping my pedal 'stuck' to my porcelain tiled floor.

arlene banken 11-15-2012 03:58 AM

I use the rubberized shelf liner .works great you can get at the big box store

Rose_P 11-15-2012 04:13 AM

The one I use most doesn't scoot on the carpet, but I saw a suggestion somewhere that nobody has mentioned so far, so I thought I would. If your table is up against a wall, you can lay a board between the pedal and the wall to give the pedal something to push against. It's a matter of finding a board or piece of plywood that is the right width.

Another one would be to put a few thick lines of silicone bathtub sealer on the bottom of the pedal. Do this when you won't be needing the machine for awhile because it may need a full day to dry. Read the label on the product because they might vary.

maryfrang 11-15-2012 05:14 AM

Velco tape if you have carpet. Works great and you only need the loop part and cheap. Pennies.

quilttiger 11-15-2012 05:20 AM

Great ideas out there! Here's another one. Not only did my pedal keep moving but I needed to have it slightly raised because of my height. A few years ao, DH took an old metal computer printer stand with a slanted angle (higher in the back and lower towards my foot) to it. He placed a nice piece of wood with a short lip across the bottom so the pedal would not slide off. I put a piece of sticky shelf liner to keep the pedal from going sideways. It's been a Godsend and I have taken it to a couple of quilt retreats.

sparkys_mom 11-15-2012 05:27 AM

I bought some of that rubbery shelf liner that comes in rolls. I didn't like it for my kitchen shelves because the dishes wouldn't slide in and out but it works very well for my foot pedal. I have vinyl planking floors.

Get-A-Grip Pads

http://www.martellicatalog.com/mm5/m...egory_Code=GAG

I have one of these and love it... and wished I had another for the other machine!! (duh...need to put that on my Christmas list) I no longer have the creeping pedal that scoots under the edge of the table and keeps sewing after I move my foot.

If you live near Pensocola, Florida, go to their retail store at:
5450 N. W St. Pensacola, FL 32505

Sometimes you can get the same thing cheaper when you buy at the retail store.

joyce888 11-15-2012 06:23 AM

I'm using a leftover piece of area rug pad on my hardwood floor. It's the open waffle looking kind and is a bit more thick than the shelf lining type. BTW the shelf lining type wasn't gripping enough to hold the pedal after repeative use.

barney 11-15-2012 06:24 AM

I just use the button to sew. Gave up on the traveling foot pedal, however there are some new suggestions that I may try.

Tudey 11-15-2012 07:11 AM

That's a good idea. I covered a 6x9 inch piece of 1/2 inch plywood with shelf liner. Raising the pedal 1/2 inch off the floor helps me not to kick it accidentally

DixieLee 11-15-2012 07:17 AM

I bought one of those rolls of rubber type shelf "paper" and cut it to put under the foot. That way it does not matter if it is carpet or floor. Cheap and functional

I have the same problem with a cat built like Jabba the Hutt. ;) But she's a purr machine and I love her.

maviskw 11-15-2012 07:42 AM

I put an old pillow on the floor under my sewing table against the wall. The foot pedal pushes against that and doesn't go ANYWHERE. My serger pedal is backed by two boxes of "stuff" that are stored under the table anyway. It doesn't move either. When I take my machine to the living room to sew while "listening" to TV, I wind the cord around the table leg as suggested somewhere else here. I have to look for it often, but at least it isn't very far away. My 302A Singer in the kitchen has the foot pedal installed onto the inside cavity of the cabinet at knee level. This cabinet was custom made to my specifications in 1956. (It's large desk size, my machine is lowered into its bed, and has a wonderful amount of flat bed space.) I had been using my knee to run my mother's machine since 1943, and I really like this way. The pedal is always there. But now, no one has cabinets.

I love reading these comments. I could not stand chasing my foot pedal. For the last 4 years I simple press the start button and I'm sewing. I find I have much better control of my speed with the slide button. I had a lot of tension in my leg and my back when I used the foot pedal, because I was always stretching for the pedal.
I love the start sewing button, the needle threading button, the cutting button and the needle down button. Yep, I think I have my dream machine. It took 50 years of sewing to be happy with this machine.

w7sue 11-15-2012 09:09 AM

I love the car mat idea. I have some from the last car I totalled. Wondered why I have been saving them. Going to give one of them a try since I sew in a carpeted room and am always chasing my foot control. I keep my sewing machne on a fabric placemat so I can scoot it out of the way for trimming, etc. I don't have trouble with that scooting away like the foot does.

JNCT14 11-15-2012 09:38 AM

I have hardwood floors in my sewing room and I have tried:
Rubber shelf liner
Velcro
Mousepads
Shortening the cord
'Feet' made by putting lumps of hot glue on the bottom of the pedal

AND I have a back on my sewing table so technically the pedal should hit it and stay there - instead it goes sideways.

GGRRRRRRRRRR

Pedal Grip

I found just the thing to keep my machine pedal from sliding from a vendor at out last quilt show. Are you ready? The name of the product is "Get a Grip" by Martelli Enterprise from Pensacola, Fl phone # is 850-433-1414. This absolutely works! I bought one for my 2 sewing machines and my serger.

Pete 11-15-2012 10:05 AM

I also have a pedal mat from Martelli that I love...prior to it I used Steady Betty, the pedal stayed on the mat , but it moved on the rug.

...or insisting that the pedal is the only place to chew on his hoofie...or chew on toys on the leg connected to the foot that is operating the pedal...one way i have found...the right foot sews....the left foot wards off the doggy. helps to be dextrous though :)

CAS49OR 11-15-2012 11:33 AM

I have a small square of the cushioned drawer liner. I also have it under my machines to cut down on noise.

crtwelvecats 11-15-2012 12:19 PM

i have a wood floor where i sew so I cut the rubber shelving the size of a small mat. my pedal stays but also my other foot can go on it instead of the cold floor cause i am one of those who can't sew with shoes.but away from the machine need my slippers on, go figure. LOL

roguequilter 11-15-2012 01:55 PM

i don't know if the mat cuts down on noise or not. just got a newish janome 1600p off craigs list. pretty quiet. but if i am machine quilting...my machines always slide a bit. so i just routinely set up this way now. haven't tried quilting on the janome yet, pretty heavy machine, but on the pad anyway. i sew in d room on 1800's oak table. also don't want it gouged by machine moving. and..i also sew w the pedal foot bare...get in the "groove" and am up and down one slipper on one off as i pin up on wall and back to machine...forgetting to put slipper back on the pedal foot. sometimes that foot gets pretty darned chilled :)

KathyPhillips 11-15-2012 02:02 PM

I use the ripply shelf liners that are like rubber. They come in different colors. You only need a small piece to put under the pedal, and it works on carpet or other surfaces.

Peckish 11-15-2012 04:15 PM

Another solution that I haven't seen posted yet is to attach your foot pedal to the leg of your table, and sew with your knee, instead. I have an old Singer in a cabinet that has this option, it works pretty well!
