I used to sew in the basement but it felt like I was in a dungeon. So I moved my sewing room to one of our spare bedrooms and we put in laminate wood flooring so I could roll around( we have a 4 bedroom house all on the same floor). When my granddaughters moved to Colorado I took over the room they used to use for my cutting room and took all the boxes out of the closets and moved the onto the cutting room. I still store my fabric and books and batting in two rooms in the basement.

When I first started sewing, prior to kids, I used the kitchen table and we ate on the other half LOL When we had kids, I still used the table but had to pick up everything for dinnertime meals, a pain. Once the middle son left home I converted his bedroom into a sewing room/spare bedroom. The room was small 8.5 x 10 but installed cabinetry on one wall and shelving in the closet to accommodate my projects. Worked great except our two Goldens and my husband considered it a spare family room and all four of us were in the room TOGETHER, ugh. My husband would lay on the twin bed watching the TV and the dogs would lay behind my sewing chair so I was pinned in LOL. When we bought a retirement house I swore there would be no bed or TV in the sewing room. I now have the smallest of our two spare bedrooms exclusively, and also use the guest bedroom closet : ) My husband has his recliner in front of the TV in the great room (visible from my sewing room) or his workshop in the basement and so far, the new pups are gated OUT of the sewing room. They are only 9 months old and still pick up EVERYTHING off the floor, so it isn't safe for them yet. The room is small, approx. 10.5' x 11.5' but well organized. I started with our old dining room table (remember that table?) up on bed risers for a cutting/ironing table, but when I got my Tiara last year, my husband made a smaller table to utilize the space better. I have a design wall that retracts over the window, fat quarters in a compartment over the cutting table, notions hung on the wall, bookcases hold fabric and books etc. The more organized you are, the more you can store and FIND. Both closets have wire shelves installed (by me) in a "U" shape and hold more fabric/projects in clear totes that are labeled. Here are some pics:

Before I took my Mom's sewing machine last May, I would occasionally drag out my portable and sew. Once I had a cabinet machine and began quilting, I needed organization and space. We have no extra bedrooms, all our kids are still home, so hubby found me a space in the basement. I have my machine, some shelves for fabric and notions and a cutting table. I also have a dedicated FMQ machine in my dining room. It's in a beautiful square cabinet and when I'm not quilting, it's folded up with a vase on top.
|
When our son got married and moved out I took his room for my sewing room. I had some cabinets built on one wall. It has worked well now for 20 years. I would love more space but you make do with what is available.
|
After my husband passed away I took a second look at my 2000 sq. ft. house. Decided I didn't need two living rooms so I got rid of furniture in my family room since it was a lot bigger than the living room. adjoin my fam. room was a small dinette. I have a separate dining room so that was no longer needed either. I ripped up the carpet, my BIL put down laminate flooring for me. So now I have a huge sewing room. It's overly full though since I purchased a longarm. I also have 3 machines and a serger, two chests, a cutting table, two large sections of shelving plus numerous other items. When company comes my sewing area is out of the way and my mess can stay a mess. I love it.
|
My home is approx. 3000 sq ft, a log cabin my sons built for me. When choosing plans I made sure I would have a dedicated sewing room on the first floor. It is about 18 x 26. I also have a guest room that doubles as storage.

love your sewing room EmiliasNana, so organized ! and it looks quite big in the pictures :)

When the kids were home, I started out in the basement. Once they moved, I took over a small bedroom. When my mom moved in, we converted a garage into her room, 16 x 24, with a full bathroom and a walk in closet. When she passed, this became my office/sewing room. I worked full time at home so had to have a quiet, dedicated space to do medical transcription. Once I retired, my daughter and granddaughter moved in. My "room" became the coat, shoes, hats, mittens, etc. room. It's so hard to keep their junk cleaned up, as they come into the room from the garage and just leave stuff here. They do hang up coats, but that's cutting into my closet space! They plan on moving (after 5 years!) in April, so I will have my room back. No more hats and mittens on my sewing table! No shoes and boots to trip over! No books and mail on my cutting table! Love them to death, but sure glad to get my space back! Of course, once they are gone, hubby and I thinking of getting a smaller place. Too much upkeep on this place, both inside and out. If we could just find a handy man to do outside stuff, but nobody wants to do anything anymore. Teenagers do a half a**ed job and want full pay. Our dear son comes when he can, but lives out of town and is very busy with his career. Love hearing about everyone's special sewing place!

I started sewing in a small house of less than 1,000sq ft down in Florida. I swore to myself that when I moved up to Iowa I would find a house where I could set up my sewing room with lots of room to move around in so I made it top ofmy priority list. I found a house with a basement that would do that trick..............I thought. It looked large enough but I didn't realize that when you have more room you tend to add to it because you have the room. I went from a 10 ft quilt frame to a 12 ft, all my machines are on individual tables and I've enlarged my cutting table twice since I got here. Went from a 3 x 4 to a 4 x 6 and now 4 x 8. Sure takes up room but I can still move around. I also added a design wall which I never had before too. Still have some dress fabrics in totes under the quilt frame but at least my quilting fabrics are out to be viewed. I tend to live in my basement most of the day as I have a full bathroom, mini kitchen, TV/DVD, PC and Ipod for listening purposes. Why leave if I don't have to?
When I was remodeling the house prior to moving in I made sure I had ample lighting and plenty of electrical sockets. I changed out the fuse box (yes, the kind you screw in) to a circuit breaker so I could have my machines on individual circuits so not to overload them. Also added a whole house surge protector plus each machine is on their own surge protector too. Can't be too careful when it comes to our toys. |
When we finally had the house squared up (originally L-shaped; finally square with inside court), the original, railroad car shaped kitchen with a corner sink, corner windows (over the sink, natch), and 19 running feet of tile counter tops, back splashes, under cabinet lighting, and cabinets became my sewing room. The spot that used to be for the range is, complete with tile backsplash, the site of my double sewing center. The cabinet doors came off, no refrig. or dinette any more. That space is filled, floor to ceiling, with a substantial wood production of DH's. Don't know what to call it. There are shelves for bins close to the ceiling. Next layer down is a substantial book shelf for sewing/quilting books. There are two nooks at the lowest level: my grandmother's Singer 403 and my other grandmother's wonderful treadle reside there.
One of my favorite things about the kitchen/sewing room Frankenstein is all the electrical outlets. Also, I am one of the ones who is hooked on ease of use and re-use, bottom lines, and reconfiguration. This place does it all for me. And I can put hangers, etc. anywhere I want them. Sometimes it's like sewing in an inside out Christmas tree. Sorry, this set-up is ugly and usually messy; but, wow, does it work. And it's quiet. May every one of us sew in a place that suits them and makes them happy. Pat |

While still living in our house, we finished 3/4 of the basement, making an office, a play room and a sewing room for me. Since the house was a split entry ranch, I had 4 windows, with lots of light. Then we moved my sewing room to my daughter's old bedroom so that we didn't have to heat 1/4 of the basement, and I did have a decent amount of light, plus I could leave my projects, shut the door and nobody had to see my cluttered sewing room. Now I have a portion of my bedroom for sewing, however, my sewing table faces a large window so there is plenty of light; just not a lot of space.
|
My sewing room was a dream come true for all sewing folks about 8 years ago when we had it custom built and brought in on a roll-back from the Amish in Clark Range; 16x35, if I remember right, it is about 40' from my back/deck door. Sometimes I have to MAKE myself go out there to work alone, but going out there with someone, I can get tons of piecing/quilting/sewing done.
That many years down the road, when I do occasionally post a pic, you can see what an unorganized wreck I am; shelves along the two long walls, plus long arm in front of them on one wall, and three sewing machines, my serger, ironing board and narrow shelves on the other, with just a bare minimum of space for walking down the middle. My cutting table, more shelves on one end, and a bunk-bed (queen size) and bathroom on the other. But, like you all are saying, it works for me, and when I get crazy and clean, it looks and works beautifully. |
Mine is about the same size but I've taken over half the basement. I would prefer to be where I could look out the window, but...
|
Jean45, let us know how your husband likes that idea :)
|
I have the smallest bedroom to store fabric and supplies, and have taken over what most people would use as a family room as my sewing/computer space. I have turned it into a creative space by decorating with things I love. DH says the room is now too girly. He is wrong, it is just girly enough. Lol!
|
My sewing room is my guest bedroom, which has a Murphy Bed. Works well, except when guests come to visit, I need to disassemble the sewing room and crowd everything into my (non sewing space) bedroom. I could fix my basement and sew downstairs, but there aren't any windows there and I'm afraid I'd find it gloomy. I wasn't quilting when we planned on this house and so I didn't think to plan for a room for sewing.
|
My sewing room is the former formal dining room which we never used. This our "last house." We are not going to worry about reselling it nor whether or not some future buyer will like what we have done to it, so we are doing what we like. Love that it is closed with french doors, right off the kitchen and living room/sitting area. Can stay in the midst of everything but close my door when it gets too noisy.
Love getting older and not having to please everyone, even strangers we don't know! |

I live in a townhouse 1700 sq ft. I use a laundry alcove in the garage, it's small but I can cram everything I need in it and it has 2 large windows and a fabulous view

Right now I have a 10x13 bedroom. It's worked pretty well for over 10 years, but I keep accumulating stuff and it's overflowing. I have a new room in the basement that's about 15x17, that has a separate extra big double closet for fabric and batting and kits. The new room is almost done and then all this stuff has to get down there. I'll miss looking out the window too.

For over 25 years I use to sew at our dining room table where ever we lived. My dh never minded which worked out great. After our last child moved out I took over their empty bedroom!! What delight it is to have my own work/craft room.
|
I started quilting on the dining room table, then different house, children gone, the littlest bedroom. New house is a little over 2400 sq with a full basement. I have part of the family room setup for me. It’s a very large room, 32x36, so front half is furniture & tv. Back half, there is a small bar or kitchenette area with an island and my stuff. My long arm is across the back and in front of it is my sewing cabinet (over 6 ft long), and the cutting island. I can walk all the way around each of these. At the end of the long arm is a door to a storage room. DH built shelves in the front half for my material, etc. In the front of the family room, directly across from my sewing machine is my design wall so while I sew I can look at it, and I have lots of lights! DH grouted the tile in the bathroom on this level today so almost done. It is in the basement but I have a large window behind the longarm. DH built the house so it’s a wood basement with 9’ walls, 8” insulation. We have a subfloor so the flooring is not on the cement. With 9’ walls, after the subfloor and drop ceiling, the ceiling is still normal height. Also, because it’s a wood basement, ductwork is run down inside the walls to the floor like the main floor so the floor is warm. With a wood basement, there is no moisture or humidity issue. It is actually warmer than the main floor. We’ve had wood basements before and I think it is much more usable space than cement or block basements. I thought after sewing in the great room with huge windows looking into the woods, I wouldn’t like being downstairs. I love it!-probably because it’s mine, it works great for me and I waited quite a while for it (read years). DH comes down to talk and watch tv while I’m working on quilts. The funniest thing is our dog, (my avatar) does not like being down there even when we are both there. She comes down for a few minutes and then goes back upstairs!

We went from 1375 sq. ft. to 4775 sq. ft. and with that I now have my very own sewing/quilting/crafting room. Our house is 2575 main level and 2200 in the lower level which is where my room is. However, I still find that I like cutting out my quilts on our kitchen island which is 7' x 3.5' and has a skylight over it. My husband indulges me when I do that because he knows it is just for a couple of hours.

Love your room.

I have my own sewing room too. A spare room off the garage. It works. I find if I don't have a designated space, it is too difficult to sew often. Plus then my whole house was a mess. I'm a messy sewer and I don't clean up until my project is done - sometimes that takes months. :) I gave up keeping a clean house years ago. No one will say when I'm dead "she kept a clean house".

Only in the last 5 years did I turn my son's bedroom into a sewing room. I had a small corner anywhere I could fit my crafting and machine into. I had some space in the living room until we got a couple more furry creatures and DH wasn't about to let them stay outside. Son's room was a guest bedroom and then a catch all. Cleared it out a few times. Like I said only in the last 5 years I got the machine out. Our house is only 891 sf. 3 bed 1 bath. Am always trying to reorganize. I'm one of those who leaves a bigger mess behind. At least no longer do I put things in bags. Clear containers. Things are still misplaced but everything is up. Hate taking things down then putting back up. One of these days. I only want another bathroom and another bedroom. Lord help us when we get company. Oh well. I'll just go to a motel and they can stay at our place. DH can come if he wants. LOL!

Since then we have added on, going from 1200 sq ft to 3600 sq ft, and the dining room is now totally my sewing room BUT, it's only been like that for ~3 yrs(added on 25 yrs ago). The sewing area I've used over the years has been the hall room upstairs and the corner area of our bedroom. From it I've leaned, I can sew anywhere. |
Though I have the old dining room, that is not where I keep my fabric.
When my oldest son moved out, my youngest son decided to move with him, to a house he bought on the local mom & pop golf course. He was so happy and commented that now his golf clubs will have their own room. I asked him if he realized now my fabric gets its' own room! |
I used to think I wanted a sewing room but I've grown used to the end of the dinner table.
QAYG doesn't require a lot of space and my stash is in a large container. Cutting and ironing are done on the portable dishwasher in the kitchen. I don't like the idea of being in isolation and I don't mind picking up because I can't stand too much mess or clutter |
Dresiarnaz, what is QAYG?
|
Our house is quite large but I keep buying weaving looms and my sewing room got pushed back into a nook that's maybe 5 x 8. with a 4 ft. knee wall on one side and banister for stair well on the other. It works since I quilt less than I weave. I have a great eco-system going since what fabrics I don't want for quilting can go into rag rugs or rag mats.
|
We have a small house too. I sew in a corner of the dining room...only place to eat other than the kitchen island. I turned Mom's bedroom when she passed away into my fabric room. Her bedroom walls are lined with bookcases and clear plastic containers (those huge containers from Walmart) with fabric. Works for me. Dh usually on his laptop sitting at the island and we have a tv between us. So we are together yet separate.
|
QAYG = Quilt as you go. My sewing area evolved from a spot in my bedroom when my future DH bought my very own sewing machine, then in the kitchen when we got married, the dining room in our first home and we had our two children, part of the master bedroom in the next home, our daughter's bedroom when she got married, the guest room in our current home, part of the unfinished basement and to finally a beautiful quilting studio in one half of the basement finished off a few years ago. It includes a man cave area for my DH who did the finishing off with a dear friend. We'll be married 50 years this summer,

I keep needing (and taking) more and more space! I used to sew on a table in the master bedroom. Then DH & I relocated and for nearly a year I was living in an apartment in the new town while he was still in our house in our old town, so I took advantage of my temporary bachelorette lifestyle and got a 2bd apartment with one room as a dedicated sewing room and I became hooked on having dedicated space and also hooked on quilting. We eventually bought a 1800 sq foot house and that's what we're in now. At first I had one of the spare bedrooms (10x10) as my sewing room but I rapidly outgrew that space. I couldn't convince DH to let me have the whole master bedroom (which is really oversized) but instead he let me take over the living room, which is about 14 x 16. We have a family room that is "his" room, and now the living room is "my" room! My upstairs room is now my art studio (I draw, paint & sculpt polyclay as well) which is a nice division and since those are my more messy projects it's good that they're all upstairs out of sight.
My living room sewing room is getting packed too though. I have my "big" quilting machine (Janome 6600) set up in an "L" with another table, plus a cabinet with an old Kenmore set up, plus another desk with my embroidery machine. Also a cutting table and another table I need to finish covering to make it my ironing surface. One wall is lined with IKEA "Billy" bookcases with doors and that does pretty well concealing my stash. Most of another wall is a big design wall, about 8 feet wide by higher than I can reach. I REALLY need to stop accumulating old machines though, almost every surface in that room is now covered with old machines. It's a little out of control! I need to either destash some fabric and make room for the machines in the cabinets, or let go of a few machines. I don't want to do either, though! I need to just hurry up and sew up about fifty quilts and make space in the cabinets that way, LOL. |
I keep my quilting area in an "L" part of our finished basement. We have full windows all around as the basement is only three feet into the ground. It's very bright with natural light. My space is 12' by 14' and open to the den/Tv room so I don't feel isolated but I'm far enough away so my sewing machines don't bother anyone who might be watching television. The three walls are lined with Ikea Billy bookcases, so I've got more than enough storage. In the center, I have two sewing cabinets head to head and a Sew EZ table butting against them on the back side. In the bookcases, I also store my three Featherweights and my serger. I love how it helps me to stay organized and tidy as it's open to the living area. Company always is drawn to that end of the room. I think it's because of all my comic book board folding of materials and the "rainbow" effect of their layout. Yes, I'm a bit OCD about things like that!

It's short for Quilt As You Go

Love this thread! I live in a two-story condo, approximately 1,000 square feet. Like SingerSewer, my "master" bedroom (which was my mom's room until she passed away in 2012) is now my sewing room, and I sleep in the smaller bedroom (in which I also have a small office space).
I have tried numerous times/ways to move my sewing space downstairs, but it has never worked out well. I have an eat-in kitchen and a living room on the first floor, but the problem is closet/storage space; there just isn't enough to fit all of my sewing accoutrements, so I would have to constantly run up and down the stairs to get things. I do, however, keep my Featherweight downstairs so if the mood strikes (and it often does), I can sew while watching TV at night. The master bedroom has plenty of space but my problem is lighting. No overhead lights and the two windows are down at one end of the room (it's long and narrow) and my sewing table only fits at the other end of the room. But I work it out. :) Just recently I moved all of my knitting/crocheting stuff and yarn into a downstairs closet off the kitchen. So the upstairs room holds all of my sewing things, plus a closet full of stuff for scrapbooking. |
I know, its so neat to hear where everyone sews and what everyones work space is like.

DH & I are thinking of moving closer to my Dad that is now 92 years old & two states over. We have a two story 4 bedroom large house. One bedroom on the main floor & three upstairs. We also have 11 lots of ground around us in a small farming community. I have most of the upstairs for my sewing, but have my main machine & lots of supplies on the main floor as it is getting to hard to go up & down the stairs. Only the smallest one for someone to sleep in. We really do want to downsize as this place is getting to much for us to take care of. We are thinking of getting an two bedroom house so no one can move in on us anymore. It seems we always have some one living with us as they all figure we have the room. Then want to do very little to help us out. Getting tired of that. Anyway, DH said if we got the biggest U-Haul possible to move us, 1/3 of it would be taken up with just my sewing stuff. LOL If we get a two bedroom house, don't know how I am going to manage that with all my sewing supplies & machines. If we get anything bigger, will be afraid the move in's will fallow us. What to do, what to do.
