House space and sewing area
Im sewing in my dining / kitchen area right now because the light is so good there, but i do have an empty bedroom i could set up in, just feel out of the way in there. I have a small house, 1300 sq feet but its plenty big enough, just not using the space as well as i probably should. How big isnyour house, and where do you sew?
The master bedroom is my sewing room. It is the largest bedroom. The smallest bedroom is mine for sleeping. I spend a whole lot more time in the sewing room than I do awake hours in the bedroom.
When we bought this house in 2000, there was a room framed but not finished, in the basement. My DH finished the room in 2004, and it's been my sewing room ever since. After I moved all my stuff in, we realized we should have extended the room to use one entire end of the basement! My sister-in-law has turned their living room in to her sewing room. The natural lighting isn't the best, but it works for her!
My sewing room is the spare bedroom. Plenty of room, large window, and right next to washer and dryer.
My sewing room is a spare bedroom. 2 nice windows and on the main floor.
When we built our house we didn't have kids (and thought we wouldn't) so one spare bedroom was the office and the other spare bedroom was my craft room. 3 years later we adopted - twice! - and there went the spare bedrooms! We moved my buddy's office into the bonus room's alcove / dormer area (there's a pool table occupying the rest of the bonus room), and I was using whatever space I could find for my sewing and crafts (usually the kitchen table). I have since moved things around in our master bedroom and was able to configure a dedicated sewing area. It's cosy, but works great!
My sewing room is a guest room (after our kids grew up ;)) in the upstairs of our 1919 two story square house. I love the space, but it was hard to get used to being off the main floor...kind of felt isolated. Now I look at that as a good thing and can really get lost in my little world of fabric. Good luck with what you decide!
I sew all over the house except the kitchen and the baths. I have about 1800 square feet, a longarm in my den, and a treadle; there are 18 more machines in the other "spare" bedrooms, and a complete around the wall sewing center in one which contains three of my newer machines and includes two embroidery machines. There are also two other machines in there. In my other area, I have three additional machines and a serger; this room is also the home of my fabric. I have another treadle in my garage, and three more cabinet machines in my utility hallway. There are a total of four more sitting in various places throughout the house. Nearly all of them work except the last two that I bought need a bit of work. When you add in the amount of fabric and thread, accessories that I have, one would probably wonder where I fit in in this space. The answer is, I fit in pretty well!
I really need to add a couple more rooms on so I can spread out a bit more! My favorite thing is to tell my kids how much fun they'll have when I'm gone!! |
Whatever size/room you make it your own.. I had a closet space in 1st house, and made it work.. Moved to 2nd house, with 3 floors, basement is what I chose, yet winter can be colder, so at times in the middle of the room. Where outside lighting in best..
It sounds like everyone has a designated sewing room, which is great, keeping everything in one place. Jackie, having your washer and dryer right next to you must be really handy! I have some organizing and re-thinking my space to do. I do like being in the kitchen though, just having to put stuff away gets to be a little tricky. My spare room has a small window and feels very dark to me even though the walls are white, there isn't much natural light in there.
When we bought the house 21 years ago, the "basement" wasn't finished. We had it finished to be an in-law apartment, in the event that our parents ever needed to come here. It has a table-space kitchen, full bath, laundry room, bedroom and living room. It is ground-level, and has 7 large windows and 2 doors with windows, so a lot of natural light. The bedroom section is a gym/design room/cutting area, and houses my two old sewing machines with their cabinets. The living room is the quilting studio, with my main sewing machine and long-arm. The kitchen is the embroidery station. The bathroom has a huge wall-to-wall closet which houses the fabrics that don't fit in the kitchen cabinets and other rooms. The basement is 1,500 square feet...all mine for my quilting/embroidery (although DH comes down to visit occasionally--there is a rocking chair for him).
I sew in the dining room. I have some a available rooms upstairs but they are not as convenient to everything else. So I just pack everything up whenever anyone is coming over.

Although i have one of our spare bedrooms set up as my craft space (mostly fabric and supply storage), I have an open concept kitchen /family room - and my sewing spot is in the area between the two rooms. I have great light - can watch TV - and still chat with my DH in the evening...my machine is fairly quiet....but when something really good is on, it's amazing how much sewing you can get done during the zillion 5 minute commercials!! In the daytime, i get the benefit of the good light, and can listen to the TV while i sew if i want. My sewing table is the one i got at Walmart - it has wheels - and once i'm done for the night i can close it up and put everything away...or not.

We have a 1500 sq ft house and 3 bedrooms. One of the extra bedrooms is my sewing and computer room. It is pretty crowded but I make do. I have a bookcase in the hall were I keep Quilting books and magazines. I have Ikea cabinets in my sewing room with all my Fabric and patterns and other misc. I keep large rolls of batting in the garage.

I would love to see pictures of everyones sewing spaces ! they all sound so wonderful ! Sync, I love the idea of an old fashioned pie safe to stash stuff in :) I have to figure out a way to clean up fast when company comes over, and was thinking of one of those rolling carts. I may just stay put in the kitchen area, I like that I can make tea and cook while Im sewing.

When our 3 kids were growing up, I sewed on the dining room table. That room was always an embarrassment because, being an old farmhouse, it was the room one had to walk through to get anyplace in the house. When oldest got married 5 years ago and the 2 youngest were in college, I moved my sewing into an upstairs bedroom. It worked well except I did feel a little 'set apart' from the main area of the house. Last fall we bought the very new home across the road from our farm. We went from 1500 to 3200 sq feet. One of the things I love about this house is the huge bonus room over the garage that is my new sewing room! I have a big tv in there and, since DH is away a lot for work, I'm enjoying my room very much. All 3 kids are married now and the 2 youngest both live out of state. Those extra bedrooms come in handy when they are home to visit and I love being able to just shut the door on my sewing room. I would say, sew where you feel the most comfortable!

I feel so blessed to have my own sewing space. This sewing space is a bit smaller than my last but between my wonderful hubby and I we have gotten the maximum out every square inch! It is simply a converted bedroom 11.5 x 12', with nothing special done to the room except a 5 tier storage shelf in the closet to hold my fabric stash. When I walk in that room I feel like I am in my own world. I painted it pale pink last year my favorite color, and have my favorite things on pretty shelves, an Embroidered Sun Bonnet Sue Valance, pretty roses cascading around the window, closet and door. It really is a reflection of all things I love. I have an 11' long sewing table with 4 sets of Ikea drawers that keeps everything perfectly organized. My hubby built my cutting table, it is 5.5'x6' supported by a set of 2 cubicles each with 9 cubbies which have fabric drawers that slide in with everything organized within. Organization is key for me to keep me sane in my special place. I don't think I could be any happier in my sewing room, it reflects all things I love and is sew cozy!! Here is a link to my postings of my room if you are interested.

Small house and I sew in my diningroom. Frustrating so I am trying to get my small storage upstairs room clean and organized so I can quilt up there. I will probably die before I get it done.
My living room has no comfy furniture - it is my designated quilting studio.
The end of my kitchen has an area that contains my recliner, the TV, and a side table -- my "living" room. Jan in VA |
Our house is 1500 sq ft. I have one of our 3 bedrooms as a sewing/guest room (although we rarely, if ever use it for that purpose). It is upstairs as is our laundry so convenient from that perspective. I machine piece and hand quilt. I do all my machine work upstairs when hubs is either working or gone otherwise. Evenings I hand quilt in the LR while hubs is home and we're watching TV. Can just shut the door to the room upstairs and don't need to worry about what it looks like. Works for me.
My sewing room is my dining room. When working on a project, I will leave it out, but have become very adept at cleaning up quickly...mats and rulers on the side of the china hutch, threads and small misc. in a double sided tackle box, and fabric in totes just outside the dining room on the porch. Machine goes into carry case. Not the most convenient, but works for me!
My sewing room is in the basement. I did this even though I could have used a spare bedroom. I like that I can leave the process behind in what ever state and it's not in eye sight on the main living space. The bonus is I have expanded to consume more of the basement. Maybe that's not so good... maybe being confined would have curbed my stash accumulation.

Right now I am using the dining room in our 1400sqft townhouse. It's attached to the living room so I can see DH while he plays video games and bug him for opinions You are right- those big ole chandeliers are GREAT for sewing and I like the dining table height for cutting. I know it's probably bad for my back, but I like the leverage I get. We are moving this summer to a 4000 sqft house we just got a contract on. I am planning to move my sewing room to one of the spare bedrooms- about 13x14ft. I have to admit I'll be a little bummed to not be in the main living space anymore. I like having some spouse time while I sew and he is good with color. I was considering making the "bonus room" into a multipurpose room. We planned to put a big TV up there. I was thinking of making a little sewing corner so I could move my machine in if I want to spend some quality hubby time while crafting. We shall see.

We live in a 1904 old farmhouse that we are remodeling. It is 2 stories and the
first remodel was to setup quilting space for me. I have 2 rooms upstairs. One has my sewing machines, cutting table and drawer units to store stuff. And in the second room I have my longarm quilting machine and my husband built in shelve units around the room where I keep all of my fabric. It has worked out really great for me and I have all of my fabric organized according to color. Even with both rooms I still have them both filled but at least it is organized for the most part. |

1800 I think but I cut in my dining room and sew in a small corner of my master bedroom, but my aunt and brother live with me so not many options. I do sew with my baby in the family room since she is currently sharing her room until 1 1/2 more years
Before we adopted two years ago we sewed in the dining room and had the quilt frame in a spare bedroom. Our stash was stored in approximately 58 different places in tote bins. When we got Emmaline we needed the bedroom and dining room back, so we closed in our garage, added kitchen cabinets, and had an island built out of base cabinets to cut and press on. All of our fabric is now ruler folded and stored neatly and visibly in the cabinets.
Our new space works well, though now we rarely have time to make quilts. |
Our house is about 1400 square feet and I am using one of the spare bedrooms. It is now known as "my room," small (11x11) but it works. If we ever get company, they are welcome to sleep in the camper or they can get a hotel.
When we were looking for a house, and by we I mean my sister, her husband and their grandson, I said that I had to have one room just for sewing. So I claimed 2 bedrooms, the larger of the 2 is my sewing room. My mother always had her own space for sewing. The room I have gets great sunlight, but I do have 2 very nice OTT lights, one that shines over the sewing machine and the other is by the ironing board (in case I have to iron at night). There is a ceiling fan with 5 lights and I also have a small OTT light that I sometimes use in the evening, especially on the cutting table in the evening.
Kids gone we have two spare bedrooms, wasn't comfortable in larger room, put bed in and made a guest room and the small front room is my sewing room, small but light and airy, I have two tables, one for my Juki and the other for my Ruby, a cabinet stores fabric, built in cupboard has quilts and other stuff, I use an ikea butchers trolley with cutting mat, small but perfectly formed:thumbup:
I used to sew in the dining room as there wasn't enough room in my study for both. As soon as my youngest grandson got a nursery place 'bad Grandma' swapped their playroom with her study and made a dedicated sewing room. Loads of built in storage and clouds painted on the ceiling too! :)
wow, its so neat to hear where you all sew and how you've adapted spaces to fit your needs. Im thinking being comfortable is most important. Some of you mentioned 3200 and 4000 square feet, can't imagine how awesome all that space must be! I like the idea of the rolling butcher cart to cut and store stuff on, and then you can just roll it away!
I sew in our guest room. I have a huge table for the machines, a cutting/ironing table under the window, and 'found' items to store my stuff. There is also a Murphy bed. when we have guests, the big table slides to the side and everything stores under the two tables so the bed can come down and guests have room for their stuff.
Trene, sounds like you can tuck everything away, how perfect !
I am in a small 2 bedroom apt and my living room is my quilting studio and the 2nd bedroom is storage of my stash.
All my stuff is in our basement now. But I got a lot more accomplished when I used the table end of our kitchen/dining room.
My husband made me what I thought was a huge sewing room in our finished basement. I am now spilling out into the tv area. Not as big as I thought. He keeps saying "maybe i need to get rid of some of the stuff", I have to agree
I love being down there away frome everything and i can just walk away and leave things out where I am working . Love it. |
Now that all the kids are gone, I have a 4 bedroom house and I use them all. The two downstairs that are orginal to the house are small, so I started off using the smallest one, the switched to the bigger one( a little bigger anyways) and now I'm into serging and since my sewing room has no extra room I started using the other bedroom for serging and extra fabric. The two upstairs bedrooms are bigger and one is my master the other is set up with 2 full size beds, a playpen and dressers, all for when my grandkids spend the night. They all have a place to sleep and lots of times two of my kids stay at the same time and love all being able to sleep in the same room. My sister may be moving down here in April so I told them they'll lose thier room for a while and they love that idea because that means they'll be sleeping with Gi-Gi again like they used to do before my daughter moved out. I'm hoping to get my sunroom finished the right way this summer then half of it will have all of my sewing stuff set up in it and then I can have a spare room downstairs. We all learn how to do things. I like not having to take my machine up and down and get less sewing done when I used to have to do that. I like it always up and ready, even if I'm not.
