christinetindell 03-22-2011 08:26 PM

How come when I post a topic, I only get one or two responses and it never ends up on the message board when we get our daily or every other day updates? Other people's topic end up on the main board and mine gets buried in the other topics. I have posted several topics and haven't ever seen them on the main page. Is it a timing issue or does someone decide what is deemed worthy of the other posting page? Just wondering?

Sadiemae 03-22-2011 08:28 PM

My guess would be that it depends on how many posts are made on the topic, or it could be how many views. I am sure a moderator will come along and tell us. You could pm one of the moderators and ask if noone has the answer.

suebee 03-22-2011 08:29 PM

Hmmm... I dont know. Dont take it personally Ive posted several times too and mine never show either (on the newsletter) no biggie. As far as just getting a couple of responses, Im not sure what could be going on there. Feel free to PM me anytime if you have a question :) Im not a pro, but if I can I will most certainly help you :):) take care!

christinetindell 03-22-2011 08:33 PM

The reason I'm wondering is because yesterday's posting had some pictures that also showed up in todays message board. Many of these topics or show and tell pictures have 14-18 pages of responses. It's weird.

trisha 03-22-2011 08:46 PM

Maybe some subjects are just more interesting than others.

Lv2sew2011 03-22-2011 08:51 PM

Not sure, was wondering the same thing...

but I looked at my topics and look at views and posting, getting a lot of views and not posting, so I'm sure it has to do with who all comments! But that's just my opinon..I'm fairly new to this board too!

Jim's Gem 03-22-2011 09:04 PM

Only the most active topics show up on that newsletter. I don't think I have had one there either.
There is no discrimination or favorites. Though a lot of the folkes on here have made a lot of friends so their topics may get visited more.

Main Page??? always go to Unread topics and then to check on one's that I have answered I will check read topics.

earthwalker 03-22-2011 09:23 PM

I agree with Jim's Gem...I also think it has to do with the sheer volume of postings this board gets....I "check in" pretty much daily and I still miss heaps and if I keep spending an hour or so a day here, I'm never going to be able to finish my quilts. Don't forget we are international...so not everyone's up and about at the same times. You may not always get comments, but check out views....some people are shy, maybe can't be online much, or just can't keep up with "watched topics".

I always go to Unread topics and then check my inbox for watched topics. I don't think Main is any more special than any other area...In fact if you look at the view rate on Pictures - you would find it gets a bigger hit rate.
Quilters are very visual/tactile people!

Anyway, there's my five cents worth (even with your currency today I believe). Keep posting and happy quilting.

christinetindell 03-22-2011 09:25 PM

Just so you know, I'm not upset or anything...I was just wondering.

Keep posting! We want to see and hear from you!!

patricej 03-23-2011 12:56 AM

yes! absolutely please keep posting! we're tickled pink to have you here!

i'll tell you a secret. feel free to pass it along the grapevine.

the number of responses a topic gets doesn't necessarily indicate how good that topic is, or how much value it adds to our community.

the best topics are those that are posted to share our projects; to share useful information; to ask positive, constructive questions so we can learn from each other; or that otherwise contribute to the fun, sharing, learning, and happiness here.

one of those with only a few responses contributes oobledy goobledy buckets and boatloads more than a complaining topic that generates page after page of sympathy and anger. ;-)

keep up the good work. we all love you. cross my heart. even if we don't say it often enough. ;-)

SueDor 03-23-2011 01:28 AM

I think it depends on what time you post. If you post real early in the morning, and then everyone else posts, your message gets lost. Also, depending on what your post is about, people may not be able to or not want to answer.

CompulsiveQuilter 03-23-2011 01:39 AM

I think it depends on the "title" or your post. Be specific about what you need help with. Or specific on what picture you are showing. Just like a magazine ad, the headline determines whether or not you would read the info below. I posted a topic "what notions are a waste of money?" that got 40 pages of responses and made the digest. If I had just said "notions," who would have bothered to click on it?

Yooper32 03-23-2011 01:43 AM

If you rely on your e-mail newsletter that used to be from Konstantin, and is now from a new ISP, you will never post anything that gets talked about as the new server sends your newsletter after the day is well in progress. I used to get mine and start reading and posting at 4:30a.m. Now by the time it arrives in my e-mail, I am long gone from the computer and on with my daily whatevers. So, now I have to come directly to the board in order to read the newest things posted.

I agree with you wholeheartedly CompulsiveQuilter....vague topic titles drive me nuts....sorry....but I have opened some of them to see what they were trying to talk about and quickly left because it made no sense to their topic title which in itself was non specific. I just have never figured out why members use such vague titles...maybe hoping it draws interest or curiosity but for me it does the exact opposite and many times is a total waste of my limited time here on the board. This is not meant to be critical but it also makes our search feature that much more frustrating because the program created for this feature has no idea where it should go....so even if it's a really good topic of information one would be hardpressed to ever find that topic again. It truly takes our more advanced and computer master members to help others out with finding them again.

That said there are thousands of replies to topics here each and every day so people look for the topics that interest them and don't always have time to wade through each and every title.
Many people don't reply to topics when they feel what they have to offer has already been said. Plus, there are topics that have been repeated so often and could be found in the search feature that maybe many members just don't post to those anymore. Whatever the reason for people not posting a lot on a particular topic please know that each and every person is valued and appreciated on this board. So don't give up or get discouraged....just keep on keeping on and ask, help and learn from this fabulous board.

christinetindell 03-23-2011 06:21 AM

I guess I wasn't commenting on the amount of comments I get, what I was asking was, why do my posts not appear when we get our daily message board digest? I get a whole list of quilting related topics, then pictures from members, then non-quilted related things, etc, etc...you know how it goes, but my messages are never posted there, they have to be searched in the "recent topics" section. I just wondered what the criteria was for having your topic on that first main page.

p38flygirl 03-23-2011 06:40 AM

Just keep on posting...Some topics are read more than others...some comments and some just looked at and totally passed by...

Zephyr 03-24-2011 04:51 AM

Mine always seem to get posted and get responses but not on the main page, or pictures. So I really thought I was posting incorrectly. Glad to hear that is not the case. Thanks for the topic.

BettyGee 03-24-2011 05:11 AM

Please don't stop posting! I try to read everything, doesn't always work out. We want to hear your thoughts so please keep them coming. Okay?

But if the topic isn't posted, how can anyone comment??

nanna-up-north 03-24-2011 05:34 AM

I'm sure a lot of us have had this problem a time or two. I once ask a question and got a few answers. Then I checked 'my posts' a couple of days later and there were pages of comments that had been added on. I was surprized but glad to read all that was said.

So, just keep posting. I've never had a question not answered ..... and I've learned so many things that have helped me improve something about my quilting. I only hope I can help someone out there that needs an answer to something they are doing.

Quiltbeagle 03-24-2011 05:42 AM

Doesn't it have something to do with the most active posts for that particular day?

What I don't understand is when a post isn't on Main or Pictures etc., how do the folks that respond to my post find it?

grumpy90650 03-24-2011 06:02 AM

it is not you!! i have posted several topics, and some have made and some did not.....usually, if it is a personal question, like which scissors to use for a particular project, it will not get posted, but if it is something that everyone has an opinion, like quilt stores throughtout the usa, then it will get posted......gina

mariemy 03-24-2011 06:21 AM

I have posted several times also and was surprised to see it was not listed under new topics for the day. When I respond to an existing post it shows up almost right away. Still confused about what gets posted and when you have to send it in. I have posted late hoping to see it the next day, was not there. Also posted early (not at 4 am!!) but about 9 am, wasn't there either. I'll keep trying.

I had wondered the same thing about a couple of my posted topics. It was only recently I realized this Message Board is only a "digest" which does not contain ALL the postings. And here I was relying on the daily digest to get the whole scoop. Now I'll also have to make time to get to the home page and catch up on all the happenings. Another couple of hours out of my day? :D

patricej 03-24-2011 08:07 AM

Don't confuse the Message Board/Quilting Board/Forum with the Digests. The board is here all the time, 24/7/365. all you have to do is come here ( http://www.quiltingboard.com ), log in, and fish around. in fact, you can select an option that will log you in automatically as soon as you get here. couldn't be easier.

Digests are emails automatically sent by our server software to subscribed members. To subscribe, or to change your current subscription settings, go to this web address:

http://www.quiltedparadise.com/supportcenter.jsp

It's extremely important that everyone understand that the digests only point toward a teeeeeeeeeeny tiny smattering of the topics posted here. If a member relies only on the digests to get here, or as their only method of keeping up with the neighborhood, she will miss most of what's going on. "Reading the digest" barely scratches the surface of everything available here.

The Digests are the least efficient way of keeping current. if you routinely come straight to the board and surf around on your own to check the latest happenings, you'll never need the digests.

Here's my own routine:

1. I set the board as my browser home page so i come straight here as soon as i hit the internet. (other options include putting a shortcut on your desktop, or adding the board to your browser favorites/bookmarks.)
2. I check my private messages by clicking on the "Private Messages" link at the top of the page. Once I've read and answered all my new mail, I
3. Click on the "Watched Topics" link at the top of the page to see the latest developments in topics of special interest to me. Once I've looked at all of those, I
4. Click on the "Unread Topics" link at the top of the page so I can see everything that's brand new since I last visited the board. After that, I
5. Click on the "Recent Topics" link. That takes me straight to all of the topics that have been updated since I last visited the board.

After that, i use the links at the bottom of the page if i want to go straight to a particular section ... just in case i missed anything.

The board is open 24/7/365. Join me, brothers and sisters! Declare your independence from the digests! Come to the board whenever you want! Go wherever you want! Read and contribute at any time of the day or night!

Revel in the freedom! (Picture a smiley, standing on a mountain top, hair blowing in the breeze, flags flapping all around, blazing sunset behind, birds singing, crowds below roaring with joy and laughter, dancing in the streets.)

Evie 03-24-2011 08:18 AM

Thank you, Patrice. I just recently figured out how it's supposed to work. I think these guidelines should be sent to all new members! I can't imagine how much I've missed out on since I found the Board. Now that I know how it works I can spend more time on here! :D Which, by the way, I love.

madamekelly 03-24-2011 08:25 AM

The newsletter is 'the most active topics" on the board. You might try using clearer language in your title to get people to read them? You are wanted here. {HUGS}

Zephyr 03-24-2011 09:37 AM

Thanks so much Patrice. I'll try and do as your instructions direct. Great site made better by knowing what to do.

Same here with me as well. I post and receive PM's from folks but seldom does it get on the Board. I think I'm missing getting some of the newsletters though since I see things on here that I never had previous knowledge of even though the person posting says they are replying to something. I did put the new addy in my address book so I'd get all the newsletters from the Board.

Olivia's Grammy 03-24-2011 11:30 AM

Yea, I've wondered the same thing. I had not thought of the timing, but maybe you're on to something. I have days when I have more time than others. Days where I only read bc of time, days where I am so nosey I have to spend more time here. All in all I love the board and love to read others comments, good or different. I don't feel like there are bad comments, just different. I am so glad that we don't all think alike.

Grambi 03-24-2011 01:39 PM

Patrice, thanks so much for the information. I had no idea that I was missing so much. Now to figure out how to make the board web address a shortcut--way beyond my computer skills!.

daisydebby 03-24-2011 01:43 PM

Funny, we learn something new every day. I only have read the stuff that comes to us daily...you called the digest??? Anyway, looks like I'll have to go to the main board and get more info. Have enjoyed everything that I've read:)

Jennifer22206 03-24-2011 01:45 PM

I don't think I've ever gotten a newsletter. I just check in when I can (after working, and running around with my 2 year old DD) and making dinner and getting stuff sorted out at home.

Maybe it's a title or time of day? I've posted a few threads that haven't gotten much feedback, and one that did get a lot. I've no idea!

newestnana 03-24-2011 02:08 PM

I've experienced the same thing on occasion, but other times my posts have gotten a lot of "action." I've noticed that posts with an attention-getting subject line seem to, well, get more attention :-) (Case in point: this post, titled "How Come?")

Sorry missed on the cut and paste. I don't understand what that means.
