Julianna 04-11-2011 11:47 AM

My DH says I am not the least bit creative because every time I sew, quilt, bake, garden, paint, write, etc. I do my own thing instead of following a set pattern, or rule, or recipe, or guide of some type. He says creative means doing EXACTLY what the plan says and not changing it one tiny bit. I say if I want it the way someone else does I will do their way, if I want it my way I will do mine.

What are your thoughts on being CREATIVE?

TeriD 04-11-2011 11:51 AM

That's the weirdest definition of creative I've ever heard. It seems to me that doing your own thing is MORE creative than following a pattern, plan, etc.

Agree 100 % :)

fabric_fancy 04-11-2011 12:01 PM

this is the exact opposite of creative.

creative people develop/design original ideas and therefore rules/plans aren't even a consideration yet - they are developed along with the creative idea.

this is why people design an original quilt and then make it before they actually prepare and sell a pattern for the mass public to use.

cjomomma 04-11-2011 12:02 PM

I say your DH has it completely back wards. His way is not creative infact it restricts all creativity. You can tell him I said that. :-).

skitter 04-11-2011 12:03 PM

I believe being creative is being able to adapt something from its original form to make something different. Just keep creating your own designs. keep up the good work

Patty Patches 04-11-2011 12:06 PM

I think you;re CREATIVE

ditto!!

Scrap Happy 04-11-2011 12:10 PM

I think you are more creative when you create the pattern as well as the quilt. Without your creativity it wouldn’t even exist this way.

Carrie Jo 04-11-2011 12:11 PM

donttell your husband but I think he has it ass backwards... lol

emerald46 04-11-2011 12:14 PM

Thinking outside the box! Darling DH is describing living inside a box and just copying what has been done before.

Exactly what you are doing!!! Your own thing...when i was teaching Arts I encouraged the kids to be creative, and that was to add something of their own!! keep on keep on!!!

LOL YUP what Carrie Jo said only I say tell him. He can't go around all his life being so dead wrong! You would be doing him a complete disservice by not letting him know he has it ass backwards. Any chance he was just pulling your leg on that one??

hobbykat1955 04-11-2011 12:30 PM

OH NO...creative is when you do your own thing and make up your own rules...Imagination

I just looked up Creative in the dictionary and your picture was there......And you looked really good!!

quiltsRfun 04-11-2011 12:40 PM

I thought being creative means doing your own thing. If you follow patterns, instructions, recipes, etc. exactly you're not putting any of yourself into it, just copying what someone else created.

I believe the correct terminology here is "bass ackwards". Besides that I am not a sheep nor a lemming. Fred says, "lets jump!" Will your DH follow Fred's suggestion, or figure out an alternative route?

LAB55 04-11-2011 12:54 PM

He is wrong. You do your thing & all will be right !! :-D

auntmag 04-11-2011 01:17 PM

My sentiments as well.

michelehuston 04-11-2011 01:39 PM

I believe adding to and changing things make them ours. Puts our personalities into the quilt and not just belonging to the quilt designer. The dictionary defination is: resulting from originality of thought, expression, etc.; imaginative: seems to me that he has it wrong. Just mho...

Donna Mare 04-11-2011 01:42 PM

Creative is thinking outside of the box...not doing exactly what is done as the pattern directions call for or to play follow the leader...

sueisallaboutquilts 04-11-2011 02:48 PM

He has it backwards!! :D:D

ube quilting 04-11-2011 02:49 PM

"Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties".
Eric From

"Imagination is More important than knowledge".
Albert Einstein

"The human mind once stretched by a new idea never goes back to it's original dimensions".
Oliver Wendel Holmes

Get the picture! I do hope your dear husband was pulling your creativity!

tjradj 04-11-2011 02:51 PM

I'd tell your hubby that he is dead wrong and to go blow it out his ear.
Being creative IS being able to see beyond the instructions and still come up with a beautiful "creation."

Being creative is NOT following the pattern. Anyone can read a pattern and follow it. Making it your own IS creativity.

TonnieLoree 04-11-2011 05:13 PM

Well, as my ex-DH used to say "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him cross the road." <-- Yes, he did say that and my daughter and I broke into hysterics when he left the room.

cathyvv 04-11-2011 05:18 PM

He's an 'inside the lines' kind of guy, huh?

Creative is what has feuled progress in the world since time began. We can't always color between the lines to be creative...we need to find our own way.

Yes, you are creative. But he can probably follow directions better than you!

cdobbert40 04-11-2011 05:23 PM

In case your Dh is like mine.
Per Webster the Definition of CREATIVE
1: marked by the ability or power to create : given to creating <the creative impulse>
2: having the quality of something created rather than imitated : imaginative <the creative arts>
3: managed so as to get around legal or conventional limits <creative financing>; also : deceptively arranged so as to conceal or defraud <creative accounting>

That saying is on several lists of screwy sayings...so your XH wasn't being particularly creative himself. It's like "don't count your chickens while the ducks are on the pond" and "a bird in the hand is better than a bear in the bush".

Creativity is the ability to produce something new through the use of imagination or original ideas.

BRenea 04-11-2011 06:35 PM

I think being creative is doing your own thing! The world would be a boring place if no one ever took the initiative to try something different.

jdiane318 04-11-2011 06:56 PM

Last time I looked up the word 'CREATIVE', there was a mirror for each one of us to look in, and when I looked it was ME. When you looked, it was YOU.

Julianna 04-11-2011 07:52 PM

Thanks everyone for the affirmations and smiles. :) My DH is actually very creative (by yours and my definition) in his work, hobbies, outdoors, traveling, building, writing, painting, etc. He just dosen't think I am. I told him of your thoughts and he finally conceeded, just a tiny bit, that I might be somewhat resourceful. He said that because I am wrong (again) that I don't go buy all the items needed to make something but rather use and adapt what I have. He spends whatever it takes, I try not to spend anything. As long as I know my opinion counts with you all I'm content. We are all very creative! :) Thanks again.

He would never, ever follow. He would always do his own route.
