I use the Edwardian Script on my computer to write out what I want the label to say, set the font size, then print it out. Trace onto light solid color fabric. Then I hand embroider it, adding flowers butterflies etc. Then I trim the edges, and sew 2 borders around it, 1 narrow and 1 wider, using fabrics in the quilt. Then I hand stitch it to the back of the quilt, using a ladder stitch.

I confess, I usually never seem to have time to make a label except when a quilt went into competition and that was a requirement. OOPS!!
|
I do machine embroidery lables and attach them on the back of the quilt.

So far, I hand embroider my labels because I like to hand embroider and because I like the look. However, my hand become very painful due to Mr. Arthur so I am looking for a new, reliable method. I am leery of printer ink not lasting after many washings.

try to always emb. the label

There are stencils available for drawing with pen.

I machine embroider the details (Made by (me) for (name of who it's for) month & year, etc) onto a corner of the backing before I finish the quilting/binding.

I use a printer and Printed Treasures fabric. In addition to the information on the label, I add colored graphics that go with the name of the quilt. For example, recently I made the label for a quilt called Tee Time. The quilt used cloth from the Hole in One fabric collection. I put a golfer teeing off on the label. For Blessings of Autumn that I finished last week, I put an autumn looking scarecrow on one side of the label and a horn of plenty with fruits and vegetables on the other side. I enjoy finding clip art for the colorful labels. For me, the labels printed on fabric are easy and fun to make.

I bought an inexpensive embroidery machine to make labels. I've only done 4 so far (and 3 were identical). It took me a LONG time to get it to work right but luckily I have lots of scraps. Bottom line was that thread brand matters-at least for this machine.
