I just finished a chevron baby quilt that was square so i added another border of white top and bottom...then I like the suggestion of a piano border for yours.

I will sometimes change the size of the quilt by adding a border that stands out on three sides then a solid wide border on those three sides and a narrow solid border on the last side. I have included a pic of my Christmas quilt - but mind you that was not square to start off with - I just wanted to make it a lot wider and a bit longer!! The top (which can not be seen very well) is only a narrow red border.

I would add a small strip of background fabric, perhaps a small colored strip followed by another small background strip, and then appliqué borders to the top and bottom.

You could add a row of the smaller squares on point with the same color cornerstones. I would do this to the top and bottom. Then a small border (the sash size) of a color (maybe a different one than the border squares if you only have the 2 fabrics) followed by a white border of same size. This should make it the size you wish without it looking like an add-on. Then you can finish with whatever border you want. Please post of pic of what you decide to do.

thank you all for your advise and suggestions, once my summer company leaves, in about 2 weeks, I will try to work on this quilt and definitely will show the end result....

Yes you can add borders top & bottom. I've done this, also put wider borders on side to accommodate a pieced border. My motto has always been until a quilt is gifted it's mine and I can do whatever I wish with it.
