How long does it normally take you to finish a quilt top? I work full time and only can sew some evenings/weekends. I am making my first quilt, king size, I know that is stupid but I want to be able to use it. It is a snow ball pattern. I think I have about half of my blocks completed.

kwhite 03-08-2011 12:05 PM

Anywhere from a few hours to many years. It all depends on the pattern.

rusty quilter 03-08-2011 12:06 PM

When I worked, it took me about 2 years to quilt a queen sized quilt on a frame. I had 2 children, but in general quilted when I could. It really doesn't matter how long...it matters more that you are still doing it. Time passes anyway.

LyndaK 03-08-2011 12:07 PM

It takes me years to complete anything. I stop, start, stop...it's about the process for me and not the product. Good thing with the speed I finish stuff! Enjoy your process when you can.:)

Murphy 03-08-2011 12:07 PM

Using some evenings and weekends you could, potentially, finish in a month or so. The trick is to sew on it a little each time you are able. Soon you become proficient at maximizing your time and "walla" soon it is done. Please share pics as you progress. We would love to see it.

BTW, I made a queen size the first time I made a quilt; I too wanted useable. Not crazy at all!!

Izaquilter 03-08-2011 02:02 PM

a lifetime! LOL I have one that I'm handquilting now that I know it has to be 11 yrs old! It is a double wedding ring that I made, put it away & still had the cornerstones to connect, put it away, got it out, put it away & just recently when I had some serious health conditions, I got it out & I'm now determined to finish it! I have 4 of the rings quilted & mannnnnnnny more to go! But luckily my health has stabilized & I'm at least motivated to quilt it! Good luck on your first!

SimpleCook29 03-08-2011 02:33 PM

My first quilt and its a king size! Not nuts and I am going on about a year on it.. I hear ya... lucky for us we have all the wonderful people on here to help us!

ptquilts 03-08-2011 02:50 PM

I used to handquilt a full size quilt in about two weeks, working full time. I am paying the price for it now, with carpal tunnel syndrome and a bone spur on my finger.

beaniekins 03-08-2011 03:23 PM

It depends on if I get sidetracked with a new project or not. If I'm disciplined, I can finish a top in two days. The fastest I've ever completed a quilt from start to finish was a lap size D9P that took me about a week. The longest it ever took me . . . well, let's not talk about that right now.

EagarBeez 03-08-2011 04:44 PM

I don't feel so bad now. It takes me anywhere between 3to 6 months depending on how often I get to the machine. I have a regualar everyday sewing machine. Between cutting blocks, pinning and sewing takes time, then to put it all together, pin again, binding and then tying, I would say start to finish about 5 mths

MadQuilter 03-08-2011 04:47 PM

Days, weeks, months, years, or never. It all depends. I love the journey - not the destination.

EasyPeezy 03-08-2011 04:49 PM

Several months. :)

KathyE 03-08-2011 05:18 PM

It depends on how motivated I am to finish the quilt. When I made my son and daughter-in-law's wedding quilt, I finished that in about 3 months (queen size). I have started some that I'm sure I will never finish. I have a short attention span :)

mopinwil 03-09-2011 02:58 AM

I was reading my newsletter this morning and came across the this thread in the 'How Long Does It Take' link. I am so glad I came across this thread because I am not a good quilt finisher. I every one of my UFO's but I do think that now, after seven years I should have had more than two finished. I am concentrating on quilting tops this year so maybe I will, at last, have my little frog quilt, my scrappy and my jelly roll finished by the end of the year.

I love the journey too and don't have to rush to the finishing line. I am a sucker to learn new techniques and I think that is why I get side-tracked.

Keeps me happy in my retirement though! Thanks girls!

It depends on the design and size of the quilt .. I have finished log cabin quilt tops (queen size) in 2 days.. cutting and sewing also in that time frame.. blocks with multiple pieces no way!! takes about a month.. that is if my dd does not come in with another project to make for our grandson.. LOL!! I have made fireman pjs and a kilt for a 2 year old boy this past 2 weeks while trying to make a quilt top and finish up on another.. boy I am sewing in my sleep.. but when I worked full time I got very organized and cut things out on the weekend and then broke the quilt down into units like sew all the flying geese this week and the 4 patches next week.. makes it more doable if you break it down.. Hugs Quiltinmama

I am retired and have probably more time to sew than the average person. I am fortunate to be able to sew every day. So, it probably doesn't take me as long as most. The ladies in my "BEE" say they don't know how I get so much done. Sometimes it is embarassing how much I get done.

vjengels 03-09-2011 05:04 AM

For me; it can take anywhere from a couple hours to 12 years ( and counting...) :)

Renee110 03-09-2011 05:05 AM

It took me 2 months. Like you, I only sew in the evenings.

peabee 03-09-2011 05:48 AM

just depends....life is unpredictable for me

chairjogger 03-09-2011 05:51 AM

I thought about that is AM, funny to see your post..

I think I will start a diary of my quilt tops. I know there is a lot of time in some patterns and more in others.

Interesting question.. Never really sit and do one all at once. Would be interesting to know.

Thanks for the post !

SandraD 03-09-2011 06:36 AM

When I make quilt tops, I usually cut and piece in 1-3 days. Then it takes me some motivation to get it sandwiched and basted. Then I hand quilt. This is where the process slows, but it's my favorite part!

Vickymomof6 03-09-2011 06:48 AM

It really depends. Some patterns are very hard and I have to really be in the right mood to tackle them. SO I have a wide range of time tables.

Landers 03-09-2011 06:49 AM

About a month for a queen or king size quilt top. I find that being organized and keeping it laid out helps me! When I am not sewing, I just place a towel over it on my cutting table. When I am ready, I just remove my towel and start again.

This is how I feel !!!

;)

ladydi64 03-09-2011 07:11 AM

I usually can finish, and sandwich in a week but I hand quilt and that takes me longer depending on how much quilting I do. I have been working on two twin size and I am almost finished quilting the second one and then I can bind the two, will show pictures when I am done.

wolph33 03-09-2011 07:19 AM

depends on how I feel.if I am having good days a top a day.even huge ones 1.5 days.but if fibro acts up I can go weeks without sewing.my problem is tops are piling up and I am not quilting.

agree...been workin on 1 for over 25 yrs (hand quilting) but it will be beautiful when done LOL

daisylady 03-09-2011 08:07 AM

I'd say you are doing great. Try to sew about half hour each eve. Can you leave your machine up and ready to use? Are you chain piecing the squares onto the block? That would help. Keep at it and you will be done before you know it.

deema 03-09-2011 08:12 AM

I did a crib sized snow ball quilt and it took me about a month.

I don't sew for hours a day...some days I don't or can't sew at all. I like not having a deadline, but I find I get more accomplished when I do. So my double sized gift quilts for Christmas only took me a few weeks each, where the much smaller crib quilt for my son took me a month.

ladeg 03-09-2011 08:22 AM

EasyPeezy I love your avitar. Do you know where I could find the pattern?

Thank you.

Sallyflymi 03-09-2011 09:23 AM

The quilt takes as long as it needs to be done. Working is hard, family and other obligations get in the way. Enjoy the process. Now that i don't work, the process is even more enjoyable. Just have fun with it. NO quilt police are on duty.

BettyM 03-09-2011 11:12 AM

I also only have evenings and weekends to work on quilts. I made a full size one that I hand quilted, and it took me 9 months! And I don't have little children that need lots of time!

I am very fortunate that we have a huge basement where I have tables set up for everything from cutting area, pressing, a table for serger, Bernina, Janome and Grandma's old Viking. Have a laying out table, two computers and then also several tables for friends that come to sew too. A TV with remote control, phone with intercom. I just need to bring down a fridge and microwave for it to be my girl cave.

I tend to be goal/task orientented. I was born two month early weighing in at 3 lbs 11 ozs 60 years ago and have always been in a hurry.

Finished my first wall hanging last night. It is like the Valentine's day wall hanging from Missouri star Quilt company. Hand sewed the binding and everything. Learned to do that on their tutorial as well. Loved the hand sewing part but cannot see myself hand quilting. Too slow for me.

Thank you all for your comments.

I guess I take about 3 months, give or take to finish a quilt. But I also have to clarify that I don't do bed size quilts, but lap size, 60x80 inches. My family and friends get more use out of the lap size, since we live in such a cold winter area. I also try not to have more than 2 going at any one time. It keeps me focused. But, of course, my housecleaning gets a little behind, but my girls always say that the dust will always be there, but the quilts are a treasure to have. So I make quilts.

Lobster 03-09-2011 01:46 PM

Anything from a week, including marking and cutting the fabrics (and making freezer paper templates, if I'm doing complex piecing) to a few months. I hand sew everything. I don't work, but on the other hand I have severe ME/CFIDS so I can't sew for as long as I'd like and sometimes I have to take the odd month off. The quilt in the icon is a metre square (full photo at http://img837.imageshack.us/i/isisquiltfinalphoto1.jpg/), and if we take off the two months I lost due to RSI and tendinitis, I worked on that for four months, including designing, piecing, appliqué, embroidery, quilting and beading.

kraftykimberly 03-09-2011 01:49 PM

Oh that depends on lots of things, pattern, daughters schedule, my schedule, time of year, the list goes on and on. I love the whole process tho so I'm good no matter how long it takes, quick or long its all good.

I work full time as well and depending on the pattern it usually takes me about a month to complete a queen size quilt start to finish. Baby quilts I can do over a weekend or a week if we do a lot of errands.

penski 03-09-2011 05:41 PM

i work partime and it takes me about a month or two for a queen size quilt
