How many UFO's do you have? I am a new quilter and already I have five UFO's. I get started on a project, then I see something else I like and start it, or I see something I want to make for someone, or I get bored with the one I am working on and start a new one, or the season changes and so does my mood. The excuses go on and on. Oh what to do. Help!

leatheflea 12-21-2010 05:58 PM

I have several, working on one now, been quilting it for over a week and I'm about tired of it. time to move on.

sueisallaboutquilts 12-21-2010 05:59 PM

At least 10 :(

I am too embarrassed to tell, but I am working on finishing them.

JanTx 12-21-2010 06:02 PM

Had more than I wanted to count until I got a move on and finished Christmas gifts. Now just 2! And one I got a long way on last night. Got used to working on gifts and felt the need to sew something.

EDITED to add: I don't count things I've bought material for, but haven't started. Should I count those? If so, then I'm back to - too many to count! I've bought things on ebay for ... someday ... have some quilt bundles from FabricCafe.com - 3 1-yard bundles with patterns. That sort of thing. But actually cut and waiting for more - still 2.

Um, I'm only 38 yrs old and I realized I have MANY UFOs, as much as 20 years old, that is, older than my kids. I was just hand-piecing a tumbling blocks block I started about 14 years ago, from a sampler quilt I started before that. I do a block here and there... Is it still a UFO if you never plan to finish it? I have sloppy blocks from my first attempts that I hate to toss but won't ever use. Also blocks started with corduroy...with cheap fabric, etc. Then nice projects I'm just creatively stuck on.

irishrose 12-21-2010 06:17 PM

Just one and it will be done right after Christmas. That does not take into account the hundreds of yards of fabric in my stash. It's not a UFO until it's out of the planning stages, IMO.

Mariposa 12-21-2010 06:20 PM

I have too many! Not sure I want to count!!

michelehuston 12-21-2010 06:26 PM

I have about 18 tops waiting to be hand quilted, but currently only one top to finish piecing. I love to hand quilt, but just don't seem to find the time or perhaps inspiration to get them finished. I know I could tie them, but they just don't 'feel' right that way.

I have just 1. A quilt as you go. Not sure I like it so I haven't finished it.

wolph33 12-21-2010 06:30 PM

too many to count,lol

Yarn or Fabric 12-21-2010 06:34 PM

I have only been quilting for a few years and I am ashamed of the number of ufo's I have... If I get sidetracked or decide I don't like the fabric or the pattern frustrates me too much.. well... in to the box it goes.

I used to quilt with someone I knew. Her and I drifted apart after she began to homeschool ( no time for friends at that point) and now she's moving out of state. Her and I used to quilt together and we cut a few projects to work on together. One of these days I will just work on them myself now :(

But my box has turned in to two boxes. I am pitiful lol.

kbs 12-21-2010 06:35 PM

You should not worry about this, it is normal, and you will fit right in.

JanTx 12-21-2010 06:38 PM

S D G - I turned my little orphan quilt-as-you-go into a table runner. Made me so happy to find a new life for the poor thing. Didn't like anything about it, but it's a great little runner - well, it's more of a square and is a bit large, but I'm sticking with it!

Jim's Gem 12-21-2010 06:38 PM

I'm not counting, but it's over 20

pioneerlady 12-21-2010 06:38 PM

What does UFO stand for? I;m new on here. Thanks

Exactly. You can pick out the fabrics, set them aside, etc., but until you take the pattern and make that first cut, it's not a UFO. How can it be unfinished if it was never started? :-P Also, if you don't ever count them, you don't have to concern yourself with them.

Lynnie25 12-21-2010 06:51 PM

Oh my goodness where do I start...

I have two containers of quilt tops (with backing and binding) waiting to be quilted - some will never be quilted in my lifetime, they are at the bottom.

I have a huge basket of orphan blocks, quilt tops half finished, block swaps, etc etc... and it is full :(

I have a huge amount of quilt tops in various stages of completion, some just wanting borders.

I have so many quilts already cut out ready to go...to numerous to count, some to be hand pieced, others ready for machine piecing.

And it has just taken me an hour to go through the completed quilts laying on a spare bed so I could find a specific one I wanted to give as a gift, there would have to be over 150 quilts, wallhangings and tablerunners.

I so envy those quilters who start one project and follow it right through to the end before they start another....just how do you do it as I have no willpower to do that whatsoever - I just am having so much fun on my quilting journey.

AnnieF 12-21-2010 06:53 PM

I probably have 20 UFOs in my quilt studio. I have listed them and check them off as I complete them....and I am getting better at starting and finishing projects...but I'm sure my problem is that I get bored so easily.

sueisallaboutquilts 12-21-2010 06:59 PM

A UFO is an unfinished project :D
We collectively probably have hundreds or maybe thousands!! lol

janRN 12-21-2010 07:04 PM

About 5 years ago I started a Christmas lap quilt. It's been pinned and ready to quilt. Every year I dig it out and swear I'll finish it this year. Well....it's still pinned and ready to quilt but NOT quilted. It's draped over a chair in the sunroom with the sides folded under so no one notices the batting hanging out. Too cold to sit out there so hopefully no one notices the pins as they go by. After Christmas I can't make myself work on it. There's always next year LOL.

patchsamkim 12-21-2010 07:04 PM

Haven't counted...but my guess would be at least 30...and that probably is a low estimate....there are probably some I never will finish...I plan on going through the stack(s) this winter and weed out those and donate to charity quilts (like Project Linus)...they will be happy to get them, and I won't have so many unfinished projects sitting around.

hperttula123 12-21-2010 07:08 PM

lol...I don't think I really want to know how many I actually have...but it's alot. :)

Shari1967 12-21-2010 07:22 PM

I have 2 that I can think of off the top of my head. If I went digging I'm sure I'd find a few more.... ;)

pab58 12-21-2010 08:01 PM

2 -- for now!

Thumbelina 12-21-2010 08:18 PM

I have at least 20. Been trying to work on getting some done, but always seem to get sidetracked. lol.

quilting cat 12-21-2010 09:42 PM

I have a copier paper box full, and a dresser drawer full, and a few in odd places...
Yesterday I came across some triangles I cut for a quilt in a 1986 magazine (with the pieces) that are exactly the size I need in the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt. I'm sending half to someone on this Board, and stitched up the other half today!
Some may languish forever, but others may be finished or recycled SOMEDAY!

UFO = UnFinished Object (projects that have been sitting around neglected for a while)

Tropical 12-21-2010 09:48 PM

I don't worry about unfinished projects anymore unless I planned them as a gift. I used to fret a lot about not finishing things, like books and sewing projects, that I had started. Well, as I have gotten older (not old - Just older, maybe I should say more mature)I have decided if I got joy doing something while I was working on it or reading it - that is enough for now. Maybe someday I will finish everything or maybe not. I get so much joy from the creativity of planning and checking out my ideas that my brain is so active coming up with that I have given myself permission not to finish everything. I have found that my new attitude leaves me much more relaxed and fun to be around for my husband. Besides, I will always have something to work on when I can't afford to buy new books or fabric. Although my husband tells me there will always be new books and fabric in my future. He is such a Love.

KiwiQuilter 12-21-2010 09:57 PM

I have a few UFOs - I really don't want to count them. Certainly there is less than 10.

I'm on a self enforced fabric moratorium - so that I can focus on these outstanding projects.

My goal is to only have 2 projects on the go at any one time.

justflyingin 12-22-2010 01:41 AM

This is why when I asked my ladies from supporting churches for their UFOs that they thought they might never finish...I got a lot of stuff!!!

I managed to finish a lot of them, give the stuff away as sets, or cut up the fabric and make charity quilts out of them.

I think it is a tendency of crafters...

When I realized that my husband was this way about stuff, it helped me become more relaxed. I got frustrated about the house--why can't he finish up the projects, etc? Why do these things bother me and not him? Then, I read this article about how some people get the thrill out of the PROCESS and not the FINISHED PRODUCT. I realized that he is like that. He doesn't care if the house ever gets finished all the way. I wish it would.

But it helped my attitude. I so enjoy the sewing part (the creating of the top itself) but I don't mind the finishing up. If it isn't that great, I make it into a tied charity quilt. That way it is much faster and not a lot of frustration to me.

That isn't to say I have no UFOs...Haha. I'm going to post some pics in the pic section of some people who took charity quilts last Sat. at our big Christmas outreach. Some of you might be curious to notice which quilts some people chose to take.

sewTinker 12-22-2010 01:57 AM

2011 is my year to banish ufo's. My sewing and storage space is limited and they just take up too much room. The ones I truly decide not to finish will be dismantled and recycled into my stash. I don't have as many as some - maybe about six. maybe eight...

bluadept 12-22-2010 03:01 AM

Since joining this board, I have come to realize in a few short months that there are many things to get us hung on a project and go on to the next. In my case I will start on a project then have to go on to another because I am either waiting for the backing to go on sale that I want or the batting. Then in the course of waiting for my sales I end up finding the perfect quilt to make for a gift that has a deadline. If I was able to get everything at one time and not have any additional projects for friends and family, I would be good. So for me with xmas coming this week I have a quilted wallet to finish for my DD,a lap quilt for a friend in Minn. that I need to finish the quilting, a dresden that is pieced that needs to be finished and 5 prs of pj's that are cut out and 2 partially done. I hope I can get at least 2 of this done by saturday. My family will wait till the jammies are done. They are all teens now. So that is only 8 things to finish. I hope to get stuff done on friday and thursday pm. If not oh well.

SuziC 12-22-2010 03:23 AM

TOO many to list....i will get busy after the New Year..Isn't that what we all say :!:

#1piecemaker 12-22-2010 04:43 AM

Honey, you don't need help! That's the way its done. I bet I have at least ten projects started. I just move from one to the next to break the monotony. Whe I start finishing them, wow! I have all these things coming together at the same time! Gives youu a wonderful feeling of accomplishment!

steelecg 12-22-2010 05:06 AM

too many

pojo 12-22-2010 05:12 AM

Too many.
