I uae patterns all the time but I tweak them in some way or other.

I don't mind admitting that I use patterns. If I see a quilt that I like and want, I use the pattern! Of course, I change the colors to suit myself. I have created my own quilts, but usually I would rather someone else figure things out for me.

I use patterns for the blocks (often paper pieced). Then I go "creative" - change colors, replace applique flowers with yo-yos and beads, rearrange blocks, try blocks on point, etc.

Patterns are truly needed for "scenic" quilts, where changes take away from the overall design. Pattern books are great for inspiration.

One time that I did follow a pattern, there was so much waste of material because they got you to cut down the pieces all of the time instead of making it to size in the first place. I usually look and do as I did 6 years of drafting at school and have EQ5. The magazines are getting to be $15 each so I give them a miss too.

I know I'm not very creative, but I'm pretty good at reading and following instructions! I have to have a pattern or all would be lost before I even started!

I often use patterns. One of my books is the "It's OK if you sit on my quilt" book which is nothing but block patterns. I LOVE using that book and pulled it out last night so I can plan my row robin.

I always follow patterns with the exceptions of flannel quilts and selecting different fabrics. They always come out just right. I really have never tried making my own.

I am new to Quilting but I have purchased patterns and can't understand half of what they are telling me to do.So I have just made my own.I learn how to make a block and go from there. I can do four now so plan on learning more as time goes by.

When I first started 30 years ago, I always followed a pattern, I didn't realize there was any other way. I did all hand quilting and piecing. Now, with the help of all these board members, I don't usually use a pattern. More fun without, unless it is absolutely something I just have to make, then will follow the pattern.

That's my view. I have made 2 quilts according to a pattern given to me....make that 1 3/4. I prefer to adjust existing quilt ideas or make my own. Of course, I never have followed directions of any kind well. I have too many quilts in my head to take more than inspiration from other people's work.
