I do use patterns sometimes, but also make up my own. The more I quilt, the more I find I have some creative ideas of my own - never really thought I was creative before.

Quiltbeagle - this picture is a beautiful quilt! Did you design this?
Inquiring minds would like to know! :>) |

Following a pattern is a good way to learn and get familiar with the grid system. Once I started understanding that, it made it much easier to see something and know how it was most likely put together. I, for one, am grateful to all of the sites that put them up. Everyone assumes my granny taught me what I know, when the truth is, the interwebz and the teevee did that.

I'm almost down to the end of my grandma's fabric stash...and once that's gone I've got to rest for a while. |
I follow a pattern sometimes, but not always. I really enjoy looking at pictures of quilts and figuring out how they were made--and then sew a similar one from "scratch." Of my last three quilts, one was from a pattern and two were my own design.

I don't use a pattern. It's not unusual for me to change my mind as I'm going along and do something different. Not dramatically different just something that pops in my head.

I wouldn't know where to begin or where I would end without a pattern. :-( :-(
