I learned on the treadle too!!! I remember my mother making me those full skirts for every dance at school. It took three yards to make them. She just gathered the fabric up and added a waist band. We put starched slips under them and sometimes jingle bells. The slips were called crenolines ,not sure it's spelled right.Does anyone else remember wearing them? Sweet memories!!!

They had both electric and treadle in the sewing class in 7th grade. I was just not coordinated enough to use the treadle which is good since 2 girls ran over a finger with the treadle. You know I bet today the treadles would have been taken out of the schools the next day with law suits involved too. Times havw sure changed huh? Take care.

I did! I wish I still had that machine. It fueled my desire for one until I FINALLY got one. LOVE it!!

I learned on my mom's treadle machine. As I remember it, the most difficult thing was trying to go forward. If it went backwards, the thread would break and so you would have to thread it all over again. Then there was always the matter of the leather belt that ran the fly wheel--if it were old, it would rot and break. My poor Mom spent many hours fixing the belt. I guess that is why I can't get excited about buying the old machines!

In the 7th grade, we had to sew on a treadle machine BEFORE we could use an electric machine. That was many, many years ago!

I learned to sew on a singer treadle, but don't know what happened to it. Sure Wish I had it.

I learned at school, but my grandma had a treadle, so I used hers a lot as well.

My mom taught me to sew when I was around 6 on doll clothes,
then at about 8 I started sewing for real. All on a Singer Treadle. I would not take for the experience. The younger generation have missed out on a lot. Sorry, I know it is not your fault.
