I attempted to learn to sew on my Grandma's treadle machine. She was always so concerned about me running it too fast and getting my fingers trapped under the needle!
|
I think I learned just by watching Gram, easier then the bike!

True, but haven't stopped since :) |
My grandma taught me how to sew on a treadle machine.

I was six years old and I had to stand up to make it work. It required more coordination that most six year olds can muster but I was already embroidering and crocheting by that age. I made a lot of "Dawn" (six inch version of barbie) outfits on that wonderful machine. I loved that old Singer treadle... I'd give my right ovary for one now.

I did, I am 58 and my mother had her grandmother machine, I used to make clothing on it, now I only sew quilts. <G> But I learned to love sewing on it many many years ago. thanks for the memory.

Add me to the treadle club. I was in 4th grade and sewed large 4-patch quilt squares using my grandmother's machine which had become my mother's when gran died (before I was born). The Singer treadle was a wedding gift from my grandfather to my grandmother about 1916-17.
My mother used the treadle more than her electric machine. It still runs but my legs are too long for the treadle! Our 12-year old granddaughter has discoverd the joy of sewing (no thanks to me as she is living far from Wisconsin). Hoping I can someday pass this family treasure on to her and that she will appreciate it. |
Learned on Mama's treadle hemming dish towels! My sisters did too but it "took" more with me. When we got a Singer Slant-o-matic 500, we thought we'd died and gone to heaven! Put those decorative stitches on every pillow case we could find! Both machines were work horses.
I grew up sewing in a team. All of us had specialties and it was true assembly line. It took forever to learn to sew alone! |
I made a broomstick skirt (anyone remember those) on my grandmother's treadle machine out of feedsacks. My aunt raised turkeys so I had a lot of choice in fabrics. My other grandmother had her treadle electrified. When I was first married I used that electfried machine. it sewed great and used the long bobbin. I don't know why I didn't keep it. i guess I just wanted to be "up to date" at
that time |
I did. Then, years later my dad turned it into an electric sewing machine. Wish I still had it.
