I'm just curious- because I love every aspect of quilt making-from planning, choosing and buying fabrics, and piecing. But my most favorite part is quilting! I can't wait to get the top finished (although I HATE the sandwiching part!) and get started FM quilting it! How many of you quilt your own quilts? And what's your favorite part of the quilt process?

Grama Lehr 02-08-2011 08:24 AM

I love picking the fabrics, hate cutting them out, love sewing them, I get giddy when it all comes together and I have a finished project!!
I only quilt little things, place mats to baby quilts, the rest I send out, she does a much better job!!

sueisallaboutquilts 02-08-2011 08:26 AM

I quilt most of my own. I have only sent out 2 of mine. But- I used to hand quilt exclusively (which I love) but I'm trying to learn MQ so I can get more done.
I will always love hand quilting though. It just takes soooooo looooong!!
I've been inspired by all of the gorgeous MQ here so I'm taking the plunge :D:D

the casual quilter 02-08-2011 08:26 AM

I do quilt my own. I have a long arm that I love running. But I really like to FMQ on my regular machine also. My favorite part of both types is selecting the design that I'll use and choosing the thread that compliments the top.

Annaquilts 02-08-2011 08:28 AM

I do but as the quilts get bigger I loose the joy of quilting it myself. Many of the quilts I make are very large extra long twins and Cal King. I would realy like a long arm. As for the part I like is designing the quilt lines, getting done and washing it up. Maybe if it was physically not as strenuous I could enjoy the actual quilting again. I do have lots of fun with baby and lap quilts.

miholmes 02-08-2011 08:29 AM

I'm new to quilting (about 9 months now) but I have quilted every project I've completed. Starting out just doing SnD, and then I was able to get a Mega Quilter (9in throat space) and quilt them on a frame with a Q-Bot.

So when I say "I" quilt them, it's really the computer, but I still have to line up the pattern etc.

One of these days I will get the courage to try and free hand something. But I need to get some muslin and practice, practice, practice! :)

I like seeing the process from beginning to end. Just the way I am though. :)

dpparris 02-08-2011 08:30 AM

Quilt my own, either by tie method or hand quilt.

BKrenning 02-08-2011 08:45 AM

I've never sent one out for quilting. I tied them or did a quilt as you go method before getting my machine quilting frame.

I love the design process, choosing fabrics, piecing the blocks, assembling the top and putting the binding on.

I usually enjoy the math of figuring out quilt sizes, blocks & pieced backing if I don't get interrupted too often.

Pressing & starching are kind of mind-numbing but I don't really enjoy or hate it. It's kind of an auto pilot thing--do it and move on.

I don't like cutting very much so I usually do it in stages--cut some, piece some, cut some more, piece some more, etc.

I hate cutting the pieces out for piecing the backs even though I enjoy the math to figure out how to do it. Making those long, straight (hopefully) cuts is nerve wracking.

Wrestling with a large quilt when turning the corners while binding is a pain as is trimming the batting. Loading it all on the frame is also an unpleasant task because of the posture to pin it all on. I have shoulder & neck problems so these steps wear me out.

Hand sewing the binding is also painful so I quit doing that. I enjoy it but my shoulder doesn't. I would still do it if I were for a special quilt but most of mine are made to use & abuse.

nativetexan 02-08-2011 08:47 AM

me. i have only had two qlts done by someone with a long arm machine. about four years ago. one still needs binding!

Queen Deb 02-08-2011 08:47 AM

I quilt my own. I think that the quilting can make or break a quilt and is just as much a part of the design process and picking the pattern or fabric. I want to be able to say that I made the quilt.

The last quilt I finished I stitched in the ditch and then tied the center of the blocks. Nothing too fancy but it fit the top.

JaKnits 02-08-2011 09:05 AM

Always quilt my own, it just wouldn't feel like I could call it "my" quilt if someone else did it for me. This is my creative outlet and I need to do it from start to finish.
My favorite parts are picking the fabric and hand sewing the binding on.

cjtinkle 02-08-2011 09:05 AM

I quilt my own, but I have a longarm. Saying that, I bought my first "longarm" (it was an HQ16) before I ever pieced my first quilt, because I knew that I would never be able to let someone else finish my projects :)

Hen3rietta 02-08-2011 09:07 AM

I do all my own. I spend a lot of time making the tops and would feel like it wasn't mine or not all mine if I sent it out for quilting. Silly, I know, but if there are mistakes, at least they are my mistakes.

Ditto!

Queen Deb 02-08-2011 09:12 AM

( I am so happy I found people on here that think like me!)

Mariposa 02-08-2011 09:15 AM

I quilt my own~

AnnieF 02-08-2011 09:19 AM

I also quilt my own. Previously....many years ago, I made bed-sized quilts and hand quilted them. These days I don't make bed-sized, I make more lap quilts and I quilt them all. The two that I sent out to a long arm quilter...bed-sized, I felt like I had lost control of the process. I'm a pretty easy going person so to come to the realization that control was a problem for me...well that was an eye-opener.

sall 02-08-2011 09:32 AM

I always quilt my own. I do hand quilting, and love the process. I have machine quilted some childrens quilts as I think of all the washing they go through, and feel that the machine quiting would hold up better with all the wear they get.If it is a special baby quilt, I hand quilt.

pumpkinpatchquilter 02-08-2011 09:32 AM

I have never sent a quilt out for longarming, although I know several longarmers! ;) I like to quilt my own quilts...they aren't all perfect, but I have improved leaps and bounds with bravery! LOL* It's not for everyone and that's ok too, but I think it's fun to do my own quilting. :)

bjeriann 02-08-2011 09:33 AM

I like to quilt my own. I did send one out to be quilted and Charismah did a beautiful job. I have a Mega Quilter with a HQ frame. I have only done meandering/stippling on them but I'm practicing other stuff now. I hope to get a larger throat machine soon which I think will be easier to do larger patterns. Cutting isn't my favorite part but it has to be done to get to the fun parts.

luvstoquilt301 02-08-2011 09:36 AM

I used to do mine---even queen ones----on my Janome 6600. I then bought my HQ16 used and doubled my productivity and do lots for our guild.

dungeonquilter 02-08-2011 09:38 AM

I have quilted my own. Lack of space keeps me from doing any large ones now. I will still do wall hangings and small quilts. Of course, the only size I have made lately has been queen size.

quilt queen 2 02-08-2011 09:43 AM

I have quilted all of mine so far I love to FMQ but I have a top I may send out it is a large medalliom I made about 6 years ago!I do a lot of SID on smaller pieces.

cmagee84 02-08-2011 09:54 AM

I quilt my own too! After I spend that much time and money on putting a quilt together, I want to be the one to finish it. I am not a professional, but I do have a short-arm and frame where I do FMQ with limited space, since my throat is only 9". I have had it since March and can really see my progress. I love learning a new skill!

I enjoy every step of the quilting process and try to have something going in all stages so that I can work on whatever I am in the mood to do at that time.

tomilu 02-08-2011 10:04 AM

I quilt my own. Was fortunate enough to get an older Gammill and I love quilting.

miss_ticky2 02-08-2011 10:58 AM

I do my own. I enjoy that part and also, can't afford to send them to a long-armer here

barbsmith 02-08-2011 11:28 AM

I quilt all of mine by hand. Takes a lot longer than machine quilting but it is very relaxing.

MadQuilter 02-08-2011 11:37 AM

Only two so far that I didn't finish. One was for a raffle and I needed help past the SID which a QB member graciously gave. The other was a 30s left-over quilt that needed an overall quilt design and I knew I would not do it justice. SO I had it long-armed. Everything else I do.

Lori S 02-08-2011 12:44 PM

If I had to quilt all my own ... I would never make a quilt bigger than a lap size.
I will stand tall and say I am a Proud Piecer!! In this case PP does not stand for Paper piecing .

Bamagal 02-08-2011 12:52 PM

I have always hand quilted mine! I have only sent one out, and that was a T-Shirt quilt that I totally botched and had to be baled out of a mess. Because it takes me so long to hand quilt, it seems that lately I have been doing baby or lap quilts. I'm ready to get back into bedsize quilts, so I am attempting to learn machine quilting. I still think I will attempt to get a hand quilted look with machine quilting. I'm not much for overall quilting. I like to enhance the design of each individual block. I guess it was the way I learned to quilt in the beginning, now over 30 years ago.

ckcowl 02-08-2011 12:55 PM

i quilt my own quilts, and many for others but hands down my favorite part is piecing. i love hand piecing, i love machine piecing, i love watching a block come together, i love THE PROCESS! and anything about quilting...but the actual act...that is so -fulfilling!

NDQuilts 02-08-2011 12:56 PM

I hand quilt my own quilts and take in quilting for others. I used to do a queen every six weeks, but have had to slow down with kids. Now I do one queen a quarter.

Lynnie25 02-08-2011 12:58 PM

I quilt ALL my quilts myself. Some are hand quilted, the rest machine quilted on my domestic sewing machine.

Years ago I sent out 2 bigger quilts to be done by a longarm quilter and they came back so stiff and hard (very poor quilting) that they could almost stand up by themselves. Even being washed repeatedly didn't help. Haven't been game to send out another...once bitten twice shy !

qnana 02-08-2011 01:07 PM

I haven't done many, but have quilted them all either by hand or machine. I look at all the beautiful work done on a LA and wish for one, but doubt that will ever happen! I want all the work to be mine, however it is accomplished!!

ajohn52 02-08-2011 01:18 PM

Guess I've only sent out 2 quilts to a LA (so far). Wish I could afford a LA myself as I'd love to "play" with one. I use my QE440. And agree the joy goes out on a bigger quilt.

janb 02-08-2011 01:21 PM

I have sent three quilt tops to my quilter who does the whole thing. Sandwishes, quilts and binds. I cannot manage hand sewing so I am very fortunate to have found her. However, I really do want to learn to FMQ on my home machine. I keep trying, but have not yet been successful. I manage to get the bobbin thread all jumbled up - its a real mess.

The Creative Seamstress 02-08-2011 01:27 PM

I've done both for various reasons. The vast majority of all my work is done by me in terms of quilting, but every now and then I'll do a major work piecing that so so beautiful and I want some really intricate FMQ to enhance it, and its not the easiest to accomplish a king sized quilt of that nature without a LAQM on a frame. When I can get access to my friends, I will FMQ it on their LAQM but if I can't I'll send it off to be completed. Also I've had a few pieces that I've sent off to have hand quilted and so it just really depends on my goals, mood, budget and time constraints. Less than 15% of anything I've ever done has been sent off for completion. I consider it a rare treat! However, nothing will get sent off when I finally get my own LAQM, but that for now is on my "someday" list.

Explosive blessings, abundance and inspiration to you all!

I quilt my own. I really enjoy the quilting part and hope to learn more designs and to get better. I can SID and meander fine, but want to learn to quilt feathers and other fancy designs. I have a few quilt tops done and ready to be sandwiched and quilted and plan to practice on them. If they aren't perfect, that is fine by me at this stage as I have only been quilting for less than a year. The one I am working on now is 106" square and, although the very center was somewhat difficult, it really wasn't that bad. You just have to stop from time to time and reposition the quilt so you don't have to pull on it.

Besides, I couldn't imagine adding the cost of quilting to each quilt...I'd just end up with a bunch of unusable tops! Plus, if I get really good, maybe, just maybe, I will be able to justify the cost of a longarm. And, if I get good enough with that, maybe, just maybe, I can make it pay for itself by quilting for others. (That's my dream, anyway! LOL)

Up until now, my least favorite part was sandwiching. But, thanks to azwendyg's great tutorial. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-91013-1.htm, I basted a quilt this past weekend in just a couple of hours and it was SEW EASY!!! I haven't quilted it yet, but am ready to get another quilt basted. All I can say is...Thank you, azwendyg!!!!

And another huge thank you to everyone here! I have learned so much and been inspired so much by all of you!

oksewglad 02-08-2011 01:32 PM

I've only sent one quilt out. Have FMQ or SID on my regular sewing machine several full size quilts and tons of little ones. Used to HQ, but find arthritis limits my stitching. Love to use a double needle and stitch across the diagonal of 9P for a quick job of quilting. The more FMQ you do, the better you become, so don't give up. And I have a long way to go in the FMQ game!
Most of my quilts are my own designs--love that part as well as picking the fabrics. Expecially love pulling fabrics from different fabric lines as that's what makes my quilt unique.
