Self-taught. I learned to sew when I was really litle. Both my Grandmas and my mom sewed so I just grew up with it. I made most of my clothes in Jr. High and High school and my first quilt when I was 21. My DD still has it and her DD uses it.

I taught my self w/help from tv and books. I made all the mistakes first and then learned the right way from those mistakes. I broke all the "rules" ie, press, press, press, accuracy in cutting, wash before using,etc., but later learned by experience that there's wisdom in those sayings.
Quilting is addictive, fabric is addictive, quilts themselves are addictive. It's my all time favorite hobby. This is my all time favorite quilting site. Can I get an amen on that?

Sele taught. I started years ago making item I needed but no way to buy. That said I learned by mistakes; sewing, reading a pattern, tricks learned from others. In some items I was able to look at them and then reproduce in my fashion. Quilting (which I have learned to love) has taken me longer (my self confidence not quite there) BUT with this wonderful community here, I am learning and learning and loving it more. Thanks everyone.

I had lessons just before I retired. Like all education I continue to read and watch tutorials and learn great stuff here. Right now I'm into reconstructing sweatshirts for grandchildren. So many commonalities in techniques.

My first quilt was a creation which just came out of my head. I always did garments but never quilting. I bought a lot of four yard pieces of fabrics at a really good sale and was trying to figure out what I would make out of my beautiful collection of fabrics. I was over-laying about five or six pieces on my kitchen table, touching and feeling how wonderful they felt and low and behold I thought this could be a quilt for my bed. I played with my fabric for about two weeks and one morning I got up and knew what I wanted to do. I did a "double wedding Ring" with my very own touch because I didn't know at that time there was a quilt by that name. I just got pencil and paper and began to make the pieces that would work together and meet in the same way time and time again. I used colored paper and taped them together using a 1/2" seam allowance. OOPS. My very good friend came by to see what I was doing and said" those seams are way to wide. She helped me trim back to what was the first 1/4" seam I had ever sewn. By the time my quilt was finished and this friend of mine did the quilting I was one of the happiest people alive. I still use that quilt on my bed. I did not know my friend was a quilter until after I had completed my top and she told me she quilted and would finish my quilt for me. She just let me do my thing with making my very own creation, other than the 1/2 seam I had taped over for seams and never told me she was watching over my shoulder "just in case". What a blessing to have a friend like this for most of my adult life.
